The Standard reports that Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen is set to lead in the Hollywood remake of Japanese classic "The Seven Samurai", alongside George Clooney and Chinese starlet Zhang Ziyi, a film company said.

Yen met with Harvey Weinstein last week to discuss the remake of the 1954 action film directed by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa. According to a spokesperson for Mandarin Films, which represents the actor, "Donnie has met Harvey Weinstein in Cannes to discuss the project, we don't know more details as it is still at an early stage".

Yen, 43-year-old actor, director and action choreographer, has starred in over 40 films, including "Blade II", "Seven Swords" and Zhang Yimou's "Hero". The Seven Samurai tells a story of seven Samurai heroes' who battle with 40 bandits who try to control and constantly attack a small village.

Oh this is going to be terrible. This is one of my favorite films, and the idea of them attempting to remake it "Hollywood" style pisses me off to on end.

I like Donnie Yen but he needs to stay the hell away from this. Why can't Hollywood just leave our Asian classics alone? Why do they have to get the Hollywood treatment for?

If Clooney's in it than I'm guessing the remake is following in the same footsteps as the anime remake titled Samurai 7. But seriously, wtf !?

What's next Casablanca ?

Yes Darthwalker- "The Magnificent Seven" was horrible.

Everything Hollywood does is bad.

Donnie Yen? Okay. Chinese playing a Japanese, wouldn't be the first time. Besides, I like him.

George Clooney? WTF?

WTF is this movie going to be?

Why not have an all-Japanese cast? Ken Watanabe? Beat Takeshi? ...couldn't be that hard to put together... :appalled:

Obvious did modern sounds like a simple re-interpretation like "The Magnificent Seven".

I'm thinking some kind of combination of "Tears of the Sun" and "Ocean's Eleven" set in some current Asian locale.

*sigh* I swear to god, I'm about three classic movie remakes from going Cecil B. Demented on these morons...

Oh grow up! The entire artistic community is based on stealing ideas and/or remaking them. Just because a couple might have failed doesn't mean Hollywood should stop trying.

Yeah, they should remake Fantastic Four

Hey I can't control the failure of a director and writing as much you can.

If the movie is bad, let's just leave at that. It is not like you can't make improvements. [e.g. Buffy (Movie) and Buffy (TV Show)].

As someone else mentioned there was a film called The Magnificent Seven which was really good (made by Hollywood BTW)

I get really pissed off when Japanese directors remake English plays!

Yeah Kurosawa we loved "Ran"; when it was called "King Lear"!

That'll oughta hold those SOB filmmakers borrowing other people's ideas.

everybody remakes English plays. Its what theyre there for.

Those and Greek myths.

And you know what really fries my potater!

When they that film "Glengarry Glen Ross" from that American play "Glengarry Glen Ross"?

Or what about when they make a play out of that movie The Producers, then they make a movie out of that play, that was made out of a movie in the first place! Burns my biscuits, I tell ya!!!

George Clooney? Well hell, my interest is atleast peaked to see where they're going with this.

There is only one Akira Kurosawa (RIP)

Donnie Yen is nowhere close.

Remake 7 Samurai? Why? They'd have better luck remaking Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

There have been many variations of "The 7 Samurai" made over the years (The Magnificent Seven-WESTERN- and Battle Beyond the Stars - SCIENCE FICTION- are two)....I see no problem with someone attempting another one.

The chance sof it being better than the original are minimal....but if they even come close that will make it a good flick.

Clooney? Is Sodenburg involved as well?

If so, then this movie will at least be good. I have yet seen a collaboration with those two that's gone wrong.
