The Seven Samurai remake

I think that Bob adn Harvey Weinstien are NOTHING without Miramax.

So far, you got HOODWINKED and now this.

I don't know why they want to remake such an iconic movie. If you're going to pay homage to it, do it in a different way (A Bug's Life, The Magnificent Seven).

Also, I'm Asian. I have to say that there is a huge language barrier between each Asian country, unlike Latinos/Hispanics. If i see that they made Zhang speak English, that's dumb. If they want her to speak Japanese, then that's crap. Why not just get a Japanese actress. Make a new star out of Japan instead of relying on the same actress for EVERY Asian role out there.

Well since they have George Clooney in the cast, I'm assuming they aren't going for a direct translation, it may in fact turn out to be more of a homage, or a modern interpretation. Who knows.

All right, George Clooney?

I love the man, really, but I don't get this...

The Weinsteins Move Forward With Their SEVEN SAMURAI Remake!!

SEVEN SAMURAI will roll later this year for release sometime next year - no director has been announced yet. This is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 film, which later inspired THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and the Roger Corman-produced BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS among other titles. BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS rocked; I'm still in love with that titty ship.

You can read more about the Weinstein projects in THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

Watch, it'll be 105 mins and there will be a caucasian young dude (Shia LaBeouf???) included in seven. As well, I'm sure there will be memos to "tone down the ethnic overtones".

I honestly didn't think they would move forward.

They already remade this movie once, and called it the Magnificent Seven. There's no need for a modern, "hollywood" remake of it. I dont want to see them flying around on god damn wires.

There should be a law for remaking masterpieces, DON'T BLOODY TOUCH THEM :cmad:, there is no way in hell they would be able to recapture the charm and magic of the Kurasawa classic.

I really hope they do not do this. Its one of my favourit movies. Its not like they can improve it.

Next, they're gonna remake Casablanca. And after they get done with that, they're going to dig up Alfred Hitch***** corpse, skullf**k it, and release it as a remake of Vertigo...it'll still be better than the Psycho remake though :o

Why god why. I honestly don't understand the thought process behind remaking this(apart from $$$).

On one hand, remakes are good in theory, because they bring great stories to an audience who would otherwise not experience it. Yet, remakes of masterpieces can NEVER be as good as the originals, and of course Hollywood will inevitably take the soul out of it, thus nullifying the original point and viewer experience.

In short, Hollywood you are a fu?*!ng c*%t.

I might check out the original. It's a pretty essential foreign movie so it seems. I wonder if I'll like it. Quite curious.

I've never been one to say that I would boycott a movie for any reason. But this is a huge exception. There would be no way that I would see a remake of Seven Samurai. The film is too perfect and a remake would just be embarrassing. The only positive I see is that people would get interested in seeing Kurosawa's masterpiece.

Next, they're gonna remake Casablanca.
Wasn't Barb Wire a "remake" of Casablanca. I haven't seen neither, but people keep telling me so, and even Wikipedia states this.

lol. Yay for wikipedia and 'people'.

Yeah yeah like I wouldn't know.

Barb Wire (1996)
- The entire plot is a thinly disguised cyberpunk rewrite of "Casablanca." The finale even includes a direct visual quote of the original.

the Ring, the Grudge, the Eye, the Departed, Dragonball, Akira, the Ghost in the Shell, and now the Seven Samurai...

...first Hollywood had the comic book movement then a fantasy movement. i guess we're having an Asian cinema movement now.

the Ring, the Grudge, the Eye, the Departed, Dragonball, Akira, the Ghost in the Shell, and now the Seven Samurai...

The only reason Seven Samurai and the Gridge should be mentioned in the same sentence would be to show how vastly superior the Seven Samurai is compared to it, and any of those films.

Hollywood finds nothing sacred, so this does not surprise me. I fully expect many of the samurai to be played by more well known chinese actors, and that a girl will become one of the ass-kickers because if there wasn't one that would be "teh sexist" :whatever:

I'm not going to bash this film too much, although I think the Seven Samurai was one of the best films ever. This movie has been remade many times, successfully in most cases (Magnificent Seven, Bug's Life, Battle Beyond the Stars, Samurai 7, Sholeh) so I don't think it's sacrilege to do it again.

The one thing that makes me uncomfortable is that Hollywood seems to think they have to infuse one or more white American actors into Asian-themed movies in order for it to be marketable. Even Forbidden Kingdom, where you have the meeting of two of the top action stars in the world, they make the main plot about an "all-American" teenager finding his way, the main plot which is COMPLETELY absent in all the trailers I have seen.

I love how everyone is so narrow minded and ready to jump on the bandwagon on the "oh another remake this is going to suck, what Casablanca is next?" Magnificent Seven was a popular western remake that was done very well and was nominated for an Oscar. I love Seven samurai the way it was but by no means to I believe that another remake couldn't be made.

Everyone bashing it for clooney being in there, hell until I see something I'm not complaining. Lets look at the basis for Seven Samurai, seven different contrasting people band together to help a village, if they are infact casting people as samurai I can already see Clooneys role in this film, and I think it could be interesting.

Feel free to keep bashing the thought of a remake, when there has already been a quality remake.

AVP man, its aliens vs predator, so why are humans in there? Same thing with transformers being more about Shia's character instead of the actual transformers. Because Hollywood believes that they need to make movies so that the target audience can relate to the story. Is hollywood is right or wrong I'm not going to debate that on the boards thats all opinion I suppose.

**Edit**
Kez you brought so much to this thread with your last post. Thank you. /end sarcasm

Magnificent Seven wasn't a remake. It was a different version of the story. It took place in a different time, different place and the characters were different. That's why Magnificent Seven worked.
