That's why it's an APPRECIATION thread...so I don't care.Just aching to say it's a mediocre, sentimental, predictable, edge-less, crowdpleaser of a movie.
I won't though....![]()

lol i love telling ppl yeah that's a stephen king. and getting the "whhaaatt?!" if there's one thing the man can do well its creat some memorable characters. i think his short stories tend to translate better to film, esp when they're of a more realistic type.An amazing movie, the novella is just as good.
It's strange to think that this came from the mind of Stephen King.. But it did.
This and Stand By Me are two great King stories.
I sympathized him the most, and felt bad for Red being broken when the parole committee asks him about being released from prison.Great film. Lots of tremendous moments, but to me, the short side plot with the old librarian Brooks outside of prison is the most moving part of the whole movie.
I can picture Gandolfini as Bogs and if he played it like he did with his character in True Romance, he would have been terrifying.Pitt, Gandolfini & Cruise As Tommy, Bogs & Andy?

Frank Darabont spoke about The Shawshank Redemption with USA Today and revealed that Brad Pitt was supposed to play prisoner Tommy but that he pulled out so he could star alongside Tom Cruise in 1994's Interview With the Vampire.
He also revealed that James Gandolfini was supposed to play Bogs but shortly after accepting the job, Gandolfini pulled out for a bigger role as the thug Virgil in 1993's True Romance.
Even more surprising is that Tom Cruise was gunning to play Andy. Cruise "was close" to playing Andy after attending a table read. But ultimately he pulled out. Darabont says. "But he might have been too big for the movie I wanted to make.
It wasn’t a 'Cool Hand Luke' role where you want Paul Newman. It was a little less bold, more subtle than that.
- Frank Darabont
Today it's hard to imagine Pitt, Gandolfini and Cruise in those roles but what do you think? Could they have pulled it of?

I don’t think that one is that surprising, I thought that piece of trivia had been floating around for awhile.Even more surprising is that Tom Cruise was gunning to play Andy.
