Okay, Ragnarok is now officially upon us people. It opened in the UK today and will roll out across the rest of Europe and Australisia all this week so it's definitely time for this thread.

Please post your SPOILER FREE reviews here. To read member's spoiler filled reviews go here. I've also included a poll so you can rate the movie out of 10.

I'll post my review ASAP, trying to get my brain to calm down for long enough to forumlate it. :cwink:

I'm trying my hardest not to not veer off into inane fangirl keyboard smashing here but seriously I LOVED THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. As someone who's been anticipating Ragnarok for over 2 years (ever since Taika Waititi was picked as the director and Cate Blanchett was rumoured to be in talks), I was in a position where I very easily could have been left feeling seriously underwhelmed. Because how could anything ever live up to the insanely high expectations I placed on this film? But no, Ragnarok is everything that I expected from such a talented and brilliantly unique film maker as Waititi, and more.

Okay, let's start with the humour, because that's what so many reviews so far have been entirely focused on. Is there a lot of humour? Yes, there is. There is humour throughout the film, and it comes from all the characters not just a few. But please trust me when I say that this is humour which is unlike anything you've ever seen in the MCU. It's not quip based like the humour in Whedon's Avengers movies and it's not Gunn's GotG style humour either. This is Taika Waititi humour through and through, it's an entirely natural, absurdist style of humour. And it 100% works. Ragnarok is genuinely the funniest superhero movie I've ever seen, there was one woman in my theatre that laughed so hard that I thought she was going to give herself a hernia, lol.

Despite the humour, there are genuine moments of drama and pathos throughout, often in unexpected places which in my opinion makes those moments even more effecting because you're not expecting them. Waititi has proven yet again that he is an absolute master of mixing comedy and drama together in a way that looks and feels completely effortless.

Next I'll mention the characters in a non specific way as to not include any spoilers. I'm serious when I say that there isn't a character in this movie that I didn't like. Not one. Every single one of them are played to perfection and are given their own little moments to shine. The MCU has finally produced a Thor movie where Thor is the star of the show. Hemsworth is just brilliant, and trust me, everyone is going to love Thor as much as Iron Man and Cap, if not more, after this movie, no doubt. Hiddleston is in top form as Loki who is as deliciously Loki as he's ever been, Tessa Thompson is an absolute joy as Valkyrie and I can't wait to see her again in the MCU. Hulk has an actual personality (!) and Ruffalo is awesome as both the big green guy and Banner who is just adorable and I love him. The Grandmaster is the most Jeff Goldblum-y character ever commited to celluloid, if that isn't entertainment then what is? And then we come to my Queen. Cate Blanchett is deliciously sardonic and evil as Hela, she struts and she preens everywhere and she's funny too which I wasn't expecting and was a joy to behold. She's basically over everyone and everything and let's them know it constantly. You can't help but like her though, because she kinda has an actual point and you feel shreds of sympathy for her. Even more minor characters like Skurge, Heimdall, Korg and Topaz are given moments to shine. Urban's cockney-esque Skurge has an interesting arc and really fun interactions with Hela, they bounce off each other very well. Korg has officially overtaken Groot for me as the most adorable character in the MCU. I love him guys, I can't even describe how much. He tried to start a revolution but he didn't print enough pamphlets and no one came. :funny:

Hmm, what else? There are some really nice easter eggs in this movie for MCU and Marvel Comics fans alike. Stan Lee's cameo is brilliant, one of the best so far.

The action is great, there are some really original fight scenes throughout. And I must say, it's so great to see not one but two absolutely kickass female characters with unique and different fighting styles in one film destroying anyone and everything in their path. The visual effects are also top notch. There is some real spectacle here, in scenes on both Asgard and Sakaar. Don't go in thinking it's going to look like GotG because it actually doesn't, there are some basic similarities but this is pure Jack Kirby visually. It's like someone took a Kirby comic and translated it to screen, just beautiful. And the score too is a triumph, part traditional sweeping grand orchestral and choral elements representing Asgard and part retro 80's style synth representing Sakaar, and they both culminate into one totally unique whole in the final act.

If I had to give two minor quibbles it was that I don't think Hela was in the film enough, and the balance between what was happening in Asgard and what was happening in Sakaar was slightly off. I know I'm biased when it comes to Hela, but I truly felt that spending a little more time focusing on her would have benefitted the film, not just because Blanchett is brilliant but because she disappears from the movie for a large chunk of time at one stage which was slightly disappointing for me. And I do feel that maybe slightly too much focus was put on the Sakaar portion of the film considering this movie is called Thor: Ragnarok and it's main plot is about the destruction of Asgard. It felt like it was about 60% Sakaar and 40% Asgard when I can't help but feel it should have probably been the other way around. But don't misunderstand me, those two quibbles did not hamper my overall enjoyment of the film whatsoever.

So, overall? If you're even slightly interested in this film, for the love of Odin, GO SEE IT. It's the most thoroughly entertaining movie I've seen in what feels like forever. And the audience in my theatre clearly agreed, everyone was laughing, clapping and having a grand old time during the whole thing. :woot:

I agree with everything you said ^_^ I think the humour/drama tone is quite amazing, but it's hard to get it across in a review, so it's a shame that many reviews on big platforms will make it sound like just another try hard comedy. Waititi is very good at making situational honest comedy and surprising you with genuine heart.

Agreed. The humour in Ragnarok is so natural and situational, it never feels at all forced like it sometimes does in the GotG movies, which I love btw.

I'm having the hardest time trying to decide whether to give the film a 9 or 10. My heart says give it a 10 because I genuinely love it and it deserves it, but my head is saying give it a 9 solely because it needed more Hela and I should deduct a point for that. But I remember giving Doctor Strange a 9 (which retrospectively I would now knock down to a 7) and Ragnarok is soooo much better than Doctor Strange IMO.

First world problems, huh? :cwink:

Gave it a 9 too, for the same reason of not enough Hela... even though she was really hella scary. Huehue

I believe when Feige said it was Thor's TWS, he was referring not just to it being a gamechanger but also legitimately establishing Thor as a badass. I found his action scenes in the last 2 avenger films lacking.

Thanks for the great Spoiler free review. Sounds fantastic. You had mentioned that there is more time spent on Sakaar then on Asgard, I wonder if there was anything cut from the film that might have extended the Asgard sequences. The movie is a pretty good length as is, but I wonder if they had to shave anything off to keep it to a more reasonable run time. I mean we know they changed that Hela alley sequence, perhaps it is related to them editing something out. Anyways, as you said just a minor thing if the movie was otherwise enjoyable.

Yep, I settled on a 9 in the end. But Ragnarok is vastly superior to Doctor Strange IMO, as I said in my previous post. I like DS, but it looks almost painfully generic next to Ragnarok now. The Hela issue made me deduct a point, she's an awesome character and Waititi had one of the best actresses on the planet at his disposal, there should have been more of her. End of.

I hope there are plenty of deleted scenes for the home release, but I have to be honest, I will be a little annoyed if it turns out a lot of Hela/Asgard stuff was cut. :cwink:

Great thoughts everyone. My excitement level is off the charts

Yeah, I hear you but I know sometimes companies do this so they can make sure they get at least a certain number of screenings each day. It may not be the case here, but with your comment and the dramatic change in that one sequence it just has me wondering. Probably just reading to much into things.

Well done Fin with opening this specific thread and giving your overall insight on the movie. It sounds awesome and something that will make me very very happy. Can't wait to watch it and share my thoughts as well.

So pumped!

Ultimately, it's like most of the newer Marvel movies; slick but shallow, doesn't take it self seriously, and full of obligatory CGI fight scenes with no real impact. Ragnarok basically throws in all the great stuff from the comics that haven't been used yet, pays lip service to them, and then takes the piss out of the whole thing. Hulk fighting Thor? Has no impact because it's all so comedic. It's just empty spectacle. The whole movie is like that.

So much here is wasted. Heimdall (Idris Elba looks like he didn't even want to be there). Cate Blanchett. Odin. Skurge. The Fenris Wolf. Surtur. Planet Hulk. The whole Ragnarok myth is reduced to not very much. All sacrificed at the alter of constant, silly gags.

We knew this type of review is coming, it comes with the territory of the tone.

Great spoiler free review and I'm glad you liked it so much. From the sounds of it, and everything I've seen, I expect to feel the same way!

Question for those who have already seen it: do you agree with the many reviews stating that the movie lacks heart and emotions?

Just came back from the cinema.

You are in for a treat, guys! Thor is finally the GOD OF THUNDER! The power levels shown here finally do the character TRUE justice.

The humour was phenomenal. Everyone (and me) were laughing every 5 mins. And is not forced humour, it's simply awesome and perfectly timed humour throughout.

The 3rd act is amazing. Didn't expect such major things to happen.

Hela was a bit wasted, but is one of the better Marvel villains. Ruffalo was hilarious and so much fun to watch (both in human and Hulk form).

And guys.... Wait for THAT 1st mid-credit scene!

Definitely not. I think the issue with some of the reviews that say the movie 'lacks heart' are that they're from critics that maybe aren't fans of the genre, aren't into the MCU and therefore don't care for the characters in the first place. Trust me, if you're already invested in these characters (which let's face it, most of us here are), there's plenty of heart and emotion to be found. There's a scene between Thor, Loki and Odin early in the film that made me a little misty eyed tbh. And the friendship/camaraderie between some of the characters (especially Thor and Hulk/Banner) is lovely.

Just came back from my second viewing a little while ago and loved it just as much. The theatre was packed and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. Plenty of big laughs, I definitely heard someone wolf whistle when Hela appeared on screen at some stage (I swear it wasn't me!) and I overheard loads of people talking very enthusiastically about how good it was when the end credits were playing and I was leaving the theatre.

The scene where he finally let loose on the rainbow bridge I was geeking the **** out.

Heck even in the beginning when he's flying around with mljonir fighting off Suture was awesome. The shot of him flying fast trying to get away from Sutur's dragon was hhhnnnnghhhh

"Spoiler free" thread guys. Don't forget. :cwink:

And i have heard a lot about the rewatchability factor and how people seem to be wanting to see it again. Thoughts on that?

I did actually start a thread for spoilery reviews, it's just here. I just haven't had a chance to post in it yet. :cwink:
