The Superhero Cinematic Civil War of Tomorrow Thread - Part 62

Also, I'm pretty sure that Bucky accepting to take the lead of The New Avengers instead of arresting Valentina De Fontaine for her crimes, is akin to bribery, considering how hard he tried to take her down.

You make a good point about Sam versus Bucky in terms of the broader stakes for Sam as opposed to Bucky's more personal stakes, but personal stakes often connect with audiences better than the broad, especially when they wimp out on those bigger racial themes. Falcon & the Winter Soldier handled the racial stuff okay I guess, but it was undercut by bad writing (especially the "do better" speech) and an unwillingness to really go there with it. And then that stuff was completely dropped in Brave New World, and that movie was dogs*** overall, which did Sam no favors.

Add in Mackie not really having those dramatic leading man chops, and we come to where we are now. Had a Boseman or Michael B level talent been Sam, maybe it would be different.

It had potential, but with the way it was handled, its tough not to feel like Bucky's more personal story would've been more interesting than a milquetoast racial storyline.

And let's not discuss the decision to have Bucky become a Congressman. Whoever decided that s*** was smoking something I do not want. So glad Thunderbolts backed him out of that role quickly

I was just discussing characters' trajectories, not the overall quality of their shows/movies. For what's worth, I think that Falcon & Winter Soldier and Brave New World are absolute dogsh*t, while Thunderbolts* is by far my favorite CBM of 2025.

This is the first time I’m hearing that The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin wants to contact Sam Raimi and write Spider-man 4. His pitch sounds like the right approach for a legacy sequel.

I think we've had enough legacy sequels.

The future of the genre is old actors who got their characters started in the 2000s and 1990s. And when they die their AI likenesses. ‘I want the world to be how I imagined it when I was young and forever frozen that way like the mosquito in Jurassic Park.’ I think this is also part of the appeal of MAGA.

Of course all the not in demand and washed up actors are pushing for this for a giant payday for themselves they aren’t getting anyway else. They circle like sharks at the desperate studios in need of star power for the declining genre and theatrical box office.

It’s disappointing to me but that’s how it’s going.

I can't wait for that period of time where people get sick of having their childhood nachos reheated a million times. Whatever happened to being inspired by those things to make something new. Not just wholesale remaking it with like 5 changes.
What did you watch?

I think there is already a shift happening and its been gradually happening since covid. Like, notice how the buzziest movies this year are things like Sinners and Weapons and The Long Walk, F1 and of course….

I still say that this is the best comic of the past 10 years.
I’m very excited for this. This story still haunts my thoughts even after I’ve read it probably a dozen times.
I agree it's wonderful, but I do worry they're gonna try to turn it into an ongoing series. The story is already perfect as its own self-contained thing. Hoping for the best, though!

Absolutely perfect use of the genre and medium. I hope the show manages to capture at least some of that.

Super curious how close the DCU’s ‘direct’ adaptations are. With Supergirl as well.
