The Superhero Cinematic Civil War of Tomorrow Thread - Part 62

Please don’t put me on ignore:

But do we reeeeeeeeeeaaaaallly need Karen and Foggy? I can take or leave Frank, but if you give me Elektra, The Hand, Mary and Fisk, I’m happy.

I say this as someone who enjoyed Born Again, it was disrespectful to bring Elden back just to dispose of him in the first 10 mins. If Foggy HAD to go, at least have him play a decent role through most of the season, have the audience grow attached and invested in Foggy and Matt’s comraderie again and then get rid of him tragically in episode 7 or 8.

The way they did it here almost felt like there was no point in bringing Elden back at all.

Says the person who defends Peacemaker Season 2 :sneeze:

Funny you say that because that season was intentionally demonstrating exactly what can happen when you do exactly what you're suggesting Daredevil do, and focus on the superheroics and "cool stuff" while being completely oblivious to the actual people these "heroes" exist to protect. :funny:

You truly are the prime reason why women are smarter than men LOL.

Flick hear me out though. I give Born Again its props for being effective in actually having something to say about the times we are in. That Safer Streets Initiative, Fisk's corrupted rise to political power, making New York City and the civilian residents of Hell's Kitchen a character are all aspects I felt it succeeded in.

However, I'm just not personally attached to Karen and Foggy unlike others are. If they developed some of the more interesting supporting cast they brought to us, I'll take it.

But that's just me.

Peacemaker may have some tonal stuff I don't care for, but Gunn CLEARLY cares more about those characters than the Born Again showrunners do about theirs, that much is very very obvious, imo.

And just like with Batwoman, I don't give credit to showrunners for paying lip service to current issues and then handling them in the safest way imaginable to avoid ruffling anybody's feathers, which is what Born Again did imo. Don't bother, if you're gonna do that.

And if that were the case, he'd show us the true ramifications of life in Earth-X for people like Adebayo and Judo Master instead of safe, surface level writing like them discussing that dimension over a game of Scrabble.

Big missed opportunity.

For my money, the best episode of Born Again by a longshot is when he's messing around in a bank the whole episode and we don't have to deal with all their weak ongoing storylines. It's not like it's remarkable or anything, but it's a perfectly solid network TV episode.

I agree on that, and wish we got another episode there. But I thought the rest of it was really well-handled and didn't pull punches on the commentary on the casual centrists who sit idly by so they can say they're not racist and yet are perfectly happy to benefit from the racism.

Adebayo was great this season though, arguably the MVP, and Gunn clearly cares about her character and growth.

Totally agree. And that's what's frustrating to me about Gunn from a writing standpoint. He has a lot of good ideas and seemingly good intentions for these characters, but IMO, he loses himself to his own need for needless vulgarity. And then once that happens, I just roll my eyes and check out.

But agreed, great performances this season from both Danielle Brooks, Cena and even Mrs Gunn to a certain extent.

Born Again has too much Snyder to it. A lot of look at me, with bad special effects and a lot of teenage edgelord cool. The amount of forced conflict makes, "Martha!" seem natural.

They're just so transparently focused on giving people what they think they want instead of focusing on their characters and story, it's downright infuriating to me.

And they'd rather do that than pay the Netflix creative team what they're worth to come back.

@Shinobi Shaw you know how you wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the White-Men? Yeah, that's how Born Again made me feel. But worse, because I already had nirvana.

We'll argue about who's the worse edgelord between Snyder and Gunn when we get detained by Sentinels soon when Project 2025 the real Safer Streets Initiative comes into full effect for people who look like us. :csad:
