Now explain how Matt Reeves, in the aggregate, is of a lower position? Because Reeves is way out in front commercially, has similar credits from the critics (their RT and MC scores are hilariously similar), and is considered a prestige blockbuster filmmaker. Do you think Matt Reeves, hired by two of the major studios to head two of their bigger franchise (and WB's biggest) isn't held in high regard by executives? Of course he is.No, the MTV popcorn buckets don't have more cache, but we'll leave that hyperbole aside.
I'm surprised I have to belabor this point, but yes, Denis Villeneuve has an exceptionally high level of success in Hollywood. That is looking at success in the aggregate of commercial, prestige, critical, et cetera, where I evaluate his level of prestige and critical acclaim relative to other blockbuster directors. To the best of my knowledge, Villeneuve and Nolan are the most successful at straddling that divide between blockbusters and prestige.
He's received academy award nominations for best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay. He's also received nominations from the Golden Globes and from Cannes, which between them are, I think, the three most respected film awards. All the while he is responsible for multiple blockbusters.
He's also held in high regards by executives. I recently found out that he's being allowed to make a film about Rendezvous with Rama. In an era where the industry is focused on explosions and action set pieces, he's actually being permitted to develop a tentpole based on an exceptionally slow and hard science fiction story. It's a story about exploration and ideas. The characters in the book are very surface level and cookie cutter -- because the story is about the ideas, and not the characters. The fact it's being made is remarkable.
Aside: I was in the process of listening to the audio book, about halfway done, when I found out that it was being made into a film.
I love Matt Reeves as a director. I hope that he gets to make more movies. Now that I think about it, I'd be curious to see what he could do with Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica.
You're the one who made the argument of levels here, and now can't pin it down. It's super nebelous. You could've just said you prefer one of them, but instead you who made the statement that associated Matt Reeves with Zack Snyder. And it makes even less sense to compare Denis to Nolan, because commercially, Denis is nowhere near Nolan (my beloved 2049 was a massive bomb). Reeves is much closer in that regard.
And out of all three, I prefer Denis. He's one of my three favorite directors going. But that isn't the argument you made. It was one based around the idea that there is some metrics for success that show Denis is above Reeves. And you couldn't provide anything, outside of awards Denis didn't win. You brought up Cannes, which is notorious for being ****.
