GREGORY NOVECK TALKS SMALLVILLE

Gregory Noveck, senior vice-president -- creative affairs at DC Comics, told The Continuum that plans and characters for Season 9 of The CW's recently renewed Smallville are beginning to formulate.
"They're just starting to have those conversations," Noveck said. "At some point in the next few weeks, they're going to come to us and say, 'Here's our plan. Do you foresee any snags?'"
As part of his responsibilities, Noveck works with the show's creators in approving and incorporating other DC Comics characters. This season has featured such heroes as Green Arrow, Aquaman, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes and such villains as Doomsday, Plastique, Maxima, Persuader and Toyman.
Upcoming are Zatanna, played by Serinda Swan and shown above with Justin Hartley's Green Arrow, and the return of the Legion.
"I feel great about it," Noveck said of the show's increased use of DC characters this season. "The first three or four years the show was on the air, you have to be really specific and clear about what they were using from the mythology, both to establish the correct mythology of the show and to make sure it was in synch with the comic books.
"As the show evolved, though, they really developed their own style -- and their own mythology. It is its own continuity, so at this point, for me to say, 'Well, you can't use Doomsday that way because he's really this mindless beast from space and he must look like this on screen the first time we see him,' I don't think that's fair to the continuity that they're establishing.
"So, in its own way, its no different than New Frontier or from anything else we do in the comics that's almost an Elseworlds title. Fans at the end of the day know what the Superman continuity is from the comic books. This is another version of that continuity, re-told in a different way, moving the chess pieces around the table a little bit.
"I think it's fun. I'd be rather merciless for a show that's still a hit in Season 8 to say, 'Oh no, you can't do that now.'"

"We've often had conversations about how to use them and the interpretations. And there have been conversations over time, "Gee, wouldn't it be great if this guy named Hal Jordan showed up, or this kid named Bruce Wayne?' And we just won't go there. It's complicated, not only from a rights perspective, but from the character use.

But in terms of the Superman world, we've pretty much let them use anyone they've wanted within reason and reasonable interpretation of the character."

the whole Bruce Wayne/Hal Jordan/Diana Prince thing still pisses me off. Thje rights issues doesnt make any sense. Smallville ran at the same damn time as something that was supposed to be a Superman feature film. How do they differentiate the two?

Its all up to DC/WB, they police themselves with these rights issues. Supposedly you cant use the same character more than one in the media. Thats why no Bruce Wayne or Hal Jordan, but Diana Prince still hasn't and will not get a movie any time soon.

Smallville ran for what 4 seasons before the movie came out, DC was ready to cancel it I think, but somehow DC/WB aloud them to go on... Maybe stating thats not a Superman show, that is a Clark Kent show... I dunno

I like that they are already talking about the Legion returning. I really want Clark to make use of his ring and go to the future to help them fight some huge villian.

makes sense

Clark fights Doomsday. Doomsday makes a mess of Metropolis. Clark puts Legion ring on, send him and Doomsday in the future. Fighting continuing, and the legion stops by.

there you go!

Hey, I didn't know there were plans for Zatana on the show. Where's the freakin' spoiler tags? :(

BTW if you havent already, get to the theater this weekend and see The Watchmen. It's not 100% faithful to the novel but it's DAMN good.

Watchmen was pretty good to me. My wife was really bored w/ it though. I don't think general audiences get it.

I liked the Watchmen, but I unfortunately took my teens to see it.

:facepalm

A little too much sex for my 14 year old, she giggled about that at several points, but my 16 year old wasn't bothered by it...

Oh, well. I did like it.

I saw Watchmen.

Not a fan. It's fascinating. That can't be denied. It's just not very engrossing.

If you take the plot at surface value, I guess not. But the subtext and the meaning behind most everything in there is what makes it great. It's basically a deconstruction of the entire superhero genre. People teach college courses on it. Think of all the similarities you see in those characters, to Batman, SUperman, Cap, etc. and how ridiculous they become in light of that story.

I got the subtext and the grand meaning.

As it is presented, in the film at least, it's just not that engrossing. It's a cold, detached movie that doesn't come off as intellectually stimulating as the book. No matter how ambitious the ideas are, if the characters aren't worth following then I couldn't care less how philosophical the whole thing is.

yeah, I understood the overall meaning behind the story and I think the general audience does too. I just couldn't take the characters seriously. Looking at them dressed in their costumes taking a group photo had my eyes rolling. It was all a bit ridiculous, IMO.

You're giving the general populace FAR too much credit

That was sort of the point. One of Moore's basic ideas was to point out the absurdity of costumed heroes in a real world setting and that how if one actually had superpowers, they 'd generally become detached from the rest of humanity or shunned by it, whichever happens first.

Although I'll admit to laughing at Dr. M's wang on a dew ocassions. ;)

Hee, hee! I just realised that since I've moved back to Aussie, I dont get all of those annoying stupid advertisements at the top of the page.

All I have is two little one liners advertising DVD box sets on sale at various stores.

:applaud
