Hardy interview:

http://www.hitfix.com/articles/tom-hardy-compares-work-on-dark-knight-to-starbucks-the-airport

“You deal with something Dark Knight – or ‘Mad Max,’ or ‘Superman’ or ‘Spider-man,’ whatever – it’s like going to work in an airport and going, ‘Hi I’m over here!’ and then everybody goes ‘Oh here’s that, that’s the villain of the piece.’ Then it’s a thousand people going to Duty-Free. Like, [shouting] ‘I AM THE VILLAIN!’ and make a lot of noise. There’s a formula here, you can’t muck around with it. There’s a lot of rules, you’re restrained in many ways as an artist. But then you’re also grateful because of the huge exposure and the paycheck.

“Or the not-paycheck ‘cause they’re making you a stahhh,” he affects. “Whatever it is, you’re paying an entrance to getting higher exposure. These movies are huge vehicles to make a lot of money… and make a large audience happy. So now you’re at the very top level of trying to bring character work in a boutique way to something that is, y’know, Starbucks.

Anne is still in Italy as of yesterday:

His statements don't seem to indicate that he sees the Batman movies as high art or something... more like popcorn flicks. I'm not sure I totally agree... Nolan's Batfilms are a bit more complex and special than that. Certainly not like Starbucks.

I thought that is what he meant until the end:

very top level of trying to bring character work in a boutique way to something that is, y’know, Starbucks

He's saying it seems there that he is taking something artistic and trying to merge it with something commercial. That is what the brilliance is of Nolan's Bat films, they are part deeper/high art merged with a more blockbuster-esque type of film. So that audiences of all types enjoy.

Im probably totally wrong but just on the surface just reading that made it seem as though hardy wasnt all too excited about being in a batman movie except for the money and exposure. I sure hope thats not the case and Im sure Im wrong but it definitely didnt come out very flattering on paper lol.

I feel like Nolan is trying to bring boutique writing and directing to something that usually is Starbucks.

I hope Hardy talks more about this in general and not just TDKR.

I'm sure its not about TDKR in general. I mean I remember JGL said something almost exactly the same when talking about Inception. Some of these actors prefer smaller films, than the giant ones, does not mean they have any less respect for the one they are doing. (sometimes it does though) Most of the time Hardy has been very positive, but his end statement pretty much sums up what he feels about it though.

I mean if he is bringing his best character work then he must think the character is written good enough so in such way possible? I refuse to believe he thinks Nolan is commercial only and that he (Hardy) is bringing the artistic part to the table.

I think his answer must have come out wrong here. Infact I don't even understand the first part about like being in an airport, being the villain etc.

I don't really care. I appreciate his honesty. If he's doing this movie primarily to boost his career and make money, then all the power to him. And considering his talent, I'm happy for the exposure coming his way. More people need to become acquainted with Tom "Dat Neck" Hardy.

And before anyone calls him a sell-out, I have absolutely no concerns that he'll just phone it in. We're in for a treat, I'm sure.

"Boutique" is a great way to describe Nolan's Batman - it's way more high-class than your typical superhero movie. Everything has to be finely scrutinized and put under a microscope; more so than, again, your typical superhero movie.

The craft involved to acting in a big budget action film would be very different to a small scale film. Lighting and other technical aspects take over.

Well again at the end he said that he's trying to bring something artistic to something commercial. The one thing I believe he means is his limitations as an artist because he's playing a character that already has 20 years of history. That can be limiting no matter what, especially with comic fanatics that scream foul if one hair is different on their head than it was in the comics.

With other roles he probably does have more freedom, but with a character that does have a structure already built around it (even the Joker did) you do have to funnel into one type of mindset.

I think he was just being goofy, and at the end said yea I'm doing something artistic in a commercial vehicle. Tom seems like a funny guy with a good sense of humor.

I don't think Hardy could phone it in, given the director, the role, and just how Hardy is as an actor. The very fact of his physical transformation is a testament to that.

I couldn't care less if Hardy thinks Batman is corny and this job is just a paycheck to him. As long as he give his performance full effort, then it's all good.

Didn't Ledger say something along the lines of "I ****ing hate comic books," or am I imagining that?

I could have sworn Ledger said something that got peoples' panties in a bunch.

Oh he won't phone it in, he will give it his "all" for sure. I mean he knows this is massive exposure. On top of that he's following up one of the most iconic and raved characters in the past decade (Ledger's Joker) so he knows its a tough act to follow. If he fails and just phones it in, he will have massive "bad" exposure and it could destroy ones career. Nolan would not let him do that, nor Tom would do that to himself.

I believe so. Wow I never read this before, very interesting.

Heath Ledger Hates Comic Book Movies

"I actually hate comic book movies, like f****ing hate them, they just bore me s***less and they're just dumb. But I thought what Chris Nolan did with Batman was actually really good."

Yeah that's all that matters in the end and if he is amazing we will hail him and be immersed in his character no matter what he thinks of the movie and role.

But I personally really dig Hardy and it would be sad if he didn't like this one bit. But I'm sure he does and I'm sure me (and others) are just over-exaggerating the value of these words, I don't think he put much weight into them.

With the sequel set to start shooting in early 2007 (with a 2008 release date), Ledger confirms that the picture is next on his slate. He also adds that he has little experience with the world of comic books, and prefers to keep it that way, though he has been provided with one particular comic to help him prepare for the part: Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's seminal The Killing Joke.

"I think that's kind of helping me a little bit, the fact that I was never really a fan of [comics]," says the actor. "I didn't exactly despise comic books or comic book movies but I was never really one to read them that much. I never sought out the films too often but I would enjoy them if I sat down and watched them. So because of that I really feel that I'm not carrying as much pressure. … The Killing Joke is the one that was handed to me. It's really good. So I think [the film] is obviously going to be a bit [about] the beginning of the Joker. I guess [The Killing Joke] explains a little bit of where he's from, but not too much. From what I've gathered, there isn't a lot of information about the Joker and it's kind of left that way."

I do believe he did say something of that effect, maybe not as extreme as I remember it but I think he did say something similar.

It was nice to see an actor being honest for once instead of being one of those pretenders who crap on about how they always loved comics.

I was glad to see him mention Mad Max. Looking forward to seeing Hardy in that role. I wonder when they start filming for that?

I can't wait for filming to start up again. I crave blurry pictures of empty sets and people far off the in the distance! :funny:

But seriously I really hope we get copious amounts of Pittsburgh coverage.

New stuff about the Batcave! Thanks ChrisB!

Kevin O'Leary
Kevin O’Leary spotted the new Batcave being built on MGM’s lot in California. The Batcave that was used in Batman Begins was housed in London, and it looks like we’ll definitely be getting a new one in The Dark Knight Rises. I can’t wait to see what improvements Bruce Wayne has made to the “southeast corner”. The Dark Knight Rises will be filming in Los Angeles after they wrap up in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, Mr. O’Leary was not allowed to take a picture of the newly constructed Batcave, hopefully Warner Bros. releases some production stills soon.
