The Dark Knight Rises A Nostalgia Thread for The Dark Knight Trilogy

This guy Knight_Rises was a guy who claimed he worked at a theater and was gonna get a bootleg copy of the teaser for us that played before HP7. And was giving us updates as if he was at the theater. It must've been almost all night we waited and it had everyone divided in groups of people that believed him and those that didn't. He even went so far as to post a picture of inside the "theater" only for someone to point out that it was taken off google images. So basically he trolled the entire board pretty much all night. It was hell. Lol

I joined on the night of the teaser release... I think. It was definitely around there. There was someone on IMDB who posted that he bootlegged the trailer and about 2 hours later we found out he was telling the truth. Someone linked to the Hype on the IMDB boards and it seemed like a much saner place than IMDB.

The Begins teaser is awesome. I'd have loved to seen the reaction to that.

Yes indeedily doodily. It's been heavily speculated that it was done by Goyer himself as a way to test the waters and to see what the reaction would be on this new take.

It was The Dark Knight that led me to join this forum.

I loved Batman Begins and then wanted to know everything I could about the sequel. TDK was the first movie I followed the entire production of from beginning to end. I created an account on Batman-on-film to follow the news, and then kept seeing mentions of this place, checked it out, and ended up liking it better.

I could see that happening actually.

It was probably because Inception and TDKR were the Nolan films I followed the most (unfortunately if I knew the hype existed I would have been on here then) tso I find it unbelieveable that a script for a Nolan film leaked :D seeing as to me he pulls out all the stops to keep things secret.

Was it changed much in the final film?

Though secrecy went out the window in TDKR. Why Nolan couldn't film that ONE shot of Marion walking to the Tumbler on a man made set is beyond me.

The overall basis was pretty much the same. Though they were some deviations in happenings and how they occurred, as well as some scenes being omitted or altered.

I am too lazy to look up links or pics but here are a few tidbits I recall about these films:

-Before there was Batman Begins, there was Batman vs. Superman which was to star Collin Farrell as Batman and...I think....Jude Law as Superman (gag). Bale claims he auditioned for Superman and it would have come out in 2004/2005, if not for Wolfgang Peterson jumping ship for the more "interesting" project of Troy. He considered Hector vs. Achilles his Batman vs. Superman film.

-People were so desperate to get a dark, "gritty" Batman movie after B&R that many loved Aronofsky's attempt at Year One. That included his screenplay that featured Bruce as an impoverished mechanic working for Big Al and going out in hockeypads.

-Christopher who? The guy from Memento?!?!....

-Bale, Dammit. Half the fans wanted that and the rest seemed to want the guy who starred in Joss Whedon's Angel. When Bale was cast, many fans took credit for it.

-Those convinced "Intimidation Game" was its real title.

-The screenplay for Batman Begins leaking nearly a year or half a year in advance. I admit I read it.

-Being blowing away by BB and seeing it four times in theater (the only time I've done that since).

-Goyer promising the next two Bat-films would be about Joker and Dent, with Joker scarring Harvey at the beginning of the third film.

-I generally learned my lesson from hyping up movies after SM3 and also knowing too much of the plot of BB. So, I stayed in the dark for most of TDK's production. But I did love seeing snippets of the viral marketing like Harvey Dent newspaper covers and video interviews.

-I do recall people demanding Jude Law or Crispen Glover as Joker. When Heath Ledger was cast, I thought "Interesting..." but many fanboys flipped their ****. Worse, there was a small but vocal homophobic contingent that came out and defamed Ledger's casting because Brokeback Mountain made their latent repressed issues uncomfortable.

-People claiming Liev Schriber or Matt Damon was cast as Harvey Dent.

-The first pic of the Joker dropping and fans mostly loving it, but a loud minority afraid he wouldn't smile. Worse, they were angry he wasn't permawhite. And so the permawhite vs. make-up fights began and eventually morphed into Nolanites who worshipped Nolan and some trolling....I stayed off the Batboards around this time.

-The first trailer dropping and being stunning. Ledger's critics shut up.

-Ledger passing away. :(

-Read TLH and DV for the first time before TDK came out. Loved them and only expanded my appreciation for Harvey Dent and what Nolan did with that character and the scope of his second film. While TDKR's detractors are right Bane simply isn't Joker, but TLH's themes and ideas were also a richer and sounder foundation than "Knightfall" or "No Man's Land" to build a film around.

-Having someone not using spoilers in a comment section spoil Two-Face dies and Joker lives a day before I saw the movie on opening night. :(

-TDK being the best superhero movie of all time. Still is.

-Outraged TDK wasn't nominated for BP. Stil find it bemusing.

-Nolanites becoming the scourge of the Internet.

-Mainstream news outlets floating false stories about Eddie Murphy as the Riddler and PSH as Penguin.

-Fans convinced that Tom Hardy was cast as Hugo Strange. Countless fake reports about that.

-Joseph Gordon Levitt being supposedly cast as Albert Falcone (Falcone's son)/ the Holiday Killer.

-Famous actresses auditioning for two parts. Most convinced both are Talia. I was in the camp pro-Catwoman. Many were convinced she couldn't work in Nolan's world (why I'm still baffled, she's a CAT THIEF with a subtle motif if played right in a world where a Bat and clown have made theatricality big).

-Fan petitions for Angelina Jolie or Marion Collitard as Selina Kyle.

-Bane? Cool. Except for the Riddler fans who were furious.

-Fans angry Hardy wasn't buff enough. :whatever:

-Fans angry that Anne "Princess Diaries" Hathaway was cast Selina Kyle. You tell them to go watch Rachel Getting Married or Brokeback Mountain they ignore you. They then watch Havoc and complain a little less....

Notice a pattern about how every decision is met with Nolanites who treat as gospel and vitriolic skeptics who hate everything? Ah.

Yeah, it has been entertaining, but I am glad overall that I would spend months not coming onto these boards either. ;)

Just saying.

I remember how most people thought Paul Bettany should play The Joker. Most of the highlights have already been mentioned.

I feel like the Bat-Boards were a happier place 4 years ago, for obvious reasons, and it makes me kinda sad to come in here and not fully enjoy the last movie from the Nolan take.

I posted this in another thread, but it's more appropriate here. In particular pay close attention to that last link, to one of those good ol' fashioned Joker "debates".

Quite the opposite, a few of my theories about these films in general have been proven very true.

I called the plot, & villains way back in August '08, near the bottom of this page (although I was terribly wrong about Catwoman, she exceeded my expectations)

I also surmised Bruce's retirement before the start of the film (although I didn't think he'd be gone for the full 8 years)

And just for old times sake, while not a real prediction, I did recognize the amount of crow coming on this tired subject

Ahh, those were the times, I'm getting a tad teary-eyed lol :csad:

Firstly, I just have to mention how many great people I've met through these movies and forums. I was only a member since Dec. '07 (lurker since June or so of '07) but it's been a terrific ride :D

I was a lurker during TDK times. Was fun reading everything (and some of the debates).

This...is how it all began.
First official picture of Batman. Analysed to death:

Followed by a few more pictures of Batman. Mellowed the angry mob at the Hype Batman forums a little:

Yep that's exactly how I remembered it too since I have a subscription to Entertainment Weekly the first photo leak took me by surprise, and later followed by articles in Wizard plus the updates on the Hype I was excited for BB 24/7.

Initially the mention of Christian Bale had me excited since I'd already seen his work in other movies that I was happy to see him get some recognition.

And then of course countless posts on "teh puffy" suit.

Anyone else remember Spiderfreddie? He was certainly one of the highlights of these boards, what with his Robin fetish and all.

Makes me sad, feels like I've just entered the party as its all ending:waa:

I remember the debate about Hardy's accent. There was also Ra's Al Joke, who always misspelled the actors' names. RAJ gave us bail, halfaway, and Tom Hardees.

Hello. I'm Ben. I build a rocket.

Hello. I'm Ben. I build a rocket.

what r u south american or something?????

Let's not forget the greenscreen stretched over the well. That was one of the first leaks that sparked the Lazarus Pit debates.

Fun reading this thread.

I remember when this pic got released:

That was a good day.

I don't think we'll ever forget all the Joseph-Gordon Levitt rumours about who he was playing.

Who remembers when they were saying he worked undercover for the LoS or would get shot in the head Inception style?

Though, funnily enough, the main rumor turned out to be true.

The **** storm The Joker created when we first learned he would be wearing make up still never ceases to amaze me. I was in the camp who grew up thinking he did wear make up until I read his back story when I was a bit older, so it never really bothered me one way or another if the character wore make up because it's not what makes the Joker. But the noise that came from some corners of the fan base quite frankly shocked me, here was a character with white face, green hair, purple suit, and somehow it's not the Joker. Crap was being spewed from some posters that for him not to have permanent white skin is 'disrespectful' and 'not faithful' and (my personal favourite) 'doing the character an injustice'. I have heard a lot of BS come from various fan bases but nothing like the obnoxious garbage regarding something so trivial as a characters skin condition, and to epitomize said obnoxiousness fans came up with the single must ridiculous word ever created - 'perma-white'. **** me. Not only did they invent a completely obnoxious word, the replaced it with a word that already existed and had fewer syllables. For months they bagged the crap out of the decision, trying to justify why it was wrong whilst the rest of us kept pointing out to them the scarring on the character was in fact the exact same concept as to what they were arguing about. Funny how when the first trailer came about the noise subsided, and when the film came out all those 'perma-white supremacists' vanished. And why did they go quiet? Because like the rest of us kept saying - it didn't freakin' matter.
