So the men's semifinals are Djokovic vs Ferrer and Federer vs Murray. Darn it, I miss Rafa :csad: He's bound to return next month at a tournament in Chile. Let's hope it's the case.

On the women's side it will be Azarenka vs Stephens and Li vs Sharapova. I'd be surprised if we dont see Azarenka vs Sharapova in the finals.

Chile, Brasil, and Acapulco. Three events in a four week span. Then he's going to turn around and play Indian Wells and Miami? That's five events in an eight or so week span. For all the bluster about skipping the spring harcourt events, he's still listed as going. After Miami he'll get like two weeks before he plays his loaded clay season.

That's a mighty aggressive schedule for a guy that can't trust his knee. I guess the goal is to get him playing well at the minor clay events to get him in playing shape for the five Masters events that await him after that. He's got to start defending points, he needs to keep a top 4 ranking for the French Open.

Watching Sharapova, you see the Nick Bollettieri influence. When up against it, just hit the ball harder. Brilliant

Cahill pointed out near the end of the match that Sharapova was looking to her box after every point, you know, because only on the WTA is tennis a team sport. She was lost out there. It is astonishing to me that someone who has played a million hours of tennis has such an underdeveloped tactical mind. If whatever strategy that her coach put in her mind over the past 24 hours doesn't work, well don't expect her to have the critical thinking to try a different approach.

If attacking Li's forehand is resulting in getting hit off the court, maybe it would be wise to not hit big ground strokes into that corner. Naturally, Sharapova's reaction to this was to "go bigger" and hit harder. Never mind that Li was feeding off of Sharapova's pace and Sharapova was upping her unforced errors when she should have been grinding.

Take Federer last night. His serve didn't show up and Tsonga was hitting his shots for long stretches of that match. That's a dangerous combination for Federer. As always, he mixed his pace, he played human backboard until Tsonga's hot hitting went cold, and he was aggressive when his ballstriking was at its best. He used everything in his toolkit to win a match that he maybe should have lost, and he used his tactical mind to unleash those tools at the right times. There's a reason this guy won like 14 Slams without a coach.

"Azarenka plays offense well and defense well."

-Pamela Shriver

"Yes, yes she does."

-Chrissie Evert

The cookie-cutter analysis is grating. The problem is not that their analysis is so cursory and shallow, it's that they are boring to listen to. It's like they're calling the match from their living room. You can be perfunctory or boring, but not both.

Chrissie notes that Azarenka loves to be aggressive and Stephens has to find a way to curtail that. Well, such as? Where is Azarenka being aggressive, how can Stephens counter in those areas? You've been playing tennis for three times as long as she's been alive, if you can't think of strategies from the booth how is she going to in the middle of the biggest match of her life?

They make these comments, speaking in generalities, and there is zero follow through. And did I mention how monotone they are?

Chris Evert (in a sad voice): "Sloane just doesn't have that hop in her step like she did against Serena yesterday."

Maybe because she's getting the crap kicked out her? Maybe because she's been broken three times and hasn't gained an inch in any of Azarenka's service games? Maybe because Azarenka is making her pay for rolling her second serves in? Maybe because Azarenka has no problem going nuclear on her slices and short balls? Maybe because Azarenka has had little trouble passing her when she approaches?

Chrissie also says Sloane looks "drained". Okay, so she is getting obliterated because she is joyless and tired. ANALYSIS AT ITS LAZIEST! Azarenka apparently has had no role in this lopsided 6-1 first set, it's all because Sloane is sad and weak.

EDIT: I'm done talking about this now. I could go on all night about the swallow commentary that ESPN has paid for, but I will refrain from spamming this thread.

They're horrible, we know this. I wish Martina was calling this but she's on the Tennis Channel team. She'd call it as is if she were there. Evert and Shriver are predictable at times. If Sloane was winning right now they'd be all like "The 19 year old American really taking it to the world number one". But now she looks "drained" - Uh no, LOOK how well Vika is on her A game. There's so much pace coming from her, not to mention winners.

They're trying to ride high on the fact that the "next generation" is here. If Sloane doesn't live up to their incredibly huge expectations they'll forget about her like they did Oudin.

Edit: Word. :p

Vika came to play.

Edit: Please be ok. No injury. -_-

Vika, aka Mrs. Nightwing into the final! :awesome:

They'll blame the injury timeout of course but Sloane has a lot to be proud of and can walk away from this Aussie Open with her head high. But lightning didn't strike twice today. Na vs Azarenka should be a quality final.

Vika just said "I almost had the choke of the year." No, Almagro already has the honor of holding that title. :o

"The Beast" gets beasted. Djoker with the 6-2 6-2 6-1 win. If there's a tennis god out there he was in the body of Djokovic. Just scary stuff from the world number one. Must've felt like a practice match for him. Murray/Federer should definitely be more of a popcorn match tomorrow.

Wow, the hate Vika is getting right now is pretty crazy.

Remember, when Nadal calls a trainer before his opponent serves, he's being crafty. When Azarenka does it against America's sweetheart, she is the great Satan. Heck, that dirty trick was probably the only reason she won!

So I was reading Peter Bodo's preview for the first epic match of this Aussie Open, Federer/Murray XX. He claims that Federer's 3-0 mark against Murray in Slams is a useless stat. Is it? Grand Slams are the places where all of the best players play, at their hardest, usually scheduled to be at a peak, and it's best of five. How is that a useless statistic? Isner beating Djokovic in Indian Wells and Federer in Davis Cup are useless stats if you're previewing a Slam match.

I'm not saying Federer is going to defeat Murray, but saying that his winning 9 of 10 sets, all in Slam finals, is immaterial is egregious.

Murray is putting a ton of pressure on Federer right now. It doesn't help that Federer can't find his first serve. Murray is hitting deep and hard, serving big and at a high clip, and grinding whenever necessary. This guy is a beast. He still has shots where you wonder what he's thinking, and those are the points Federer has won here.

I really want to see this Murray play Nadal.

Murray is 1 of 7 on break points. That's the only thing keeping this relatively close at the moment.

Federer holds for 5-4, Murray to serve for the set. Murray should really be up a double break, we'll see if that hurts him. So far he's been serving missiles.

Wide ace in this deuce court, long rally where Federer had to hit three winners to get one, another big serve that fed floats long, a half inside in forehand draws a weak reply from Fed, unreturnable serve gives Murray the opening set 6-4.

The first thing that Federer will have to do is pray Murray's level comes down, he's getting a boatload of "cheap" points off his serve, his forehand has not gone awry once, and he's returning big.

The next thing Federer needs to happen is his first serve has to tick up, he's taking a lot off to get it in first time and Murray isn't giving him any service points. If at all, he'll need to return better too.

Somehow we are a set apiece. Federer has seen one break point this whole match and that, I believe was in Murray's second service game.

I wonder what Murray is thinking, because he should be up two sets handily.

So Murray bets Federer in 5 sets. I gotta say, i'm a bit surprised about that one, but it's nice to see Murray getting it done. Should be a great final between Djokovic and Murray.

I think the big take away from the match for Federer is that he can't play the long five setters anymore against the top grinders. He can play them comfortably if its at his pace as it was in the Tsonga quarterfinal, which was what, three hours?

This match kind of halved the status quo Nadal/Murray/Djokovic formula where five sets means five hours. It clocked in at exactly four hours but it was a heavy four hours without a ton of stalling between points like Nadal and Djokovic.

Federer showed a lot of grit and it was hilarious when he barked at Murray whilst Murr was serving for the match, and then the timid Murray blew the set. All Murray did was a mild fist pump and Federer lit into him. Funny stuff.

Federer's not done but the days of the five set marathons with Nadal at Rome, Melbourne, and Wimbledon are long gone. He had nothing left in the fifth set.

I can't believe I'm writing this, but Murray/Djokovic III will be about the serve and return. Specifically Murray's serve versus Djokovic's return. Murray was killing Federer out wide in the deuce court but also up the T. Federer is a fine returner but he isn't an agressive returner, he maybe went for six or seven second serves last night, he cheated to hit his forehand I think twice. Djokovic is a whole different beast. Murray served a lot of aces and a ton of unreturnables. Can he do that when he knows Djokovic will attempt to murder his second serve? That still soft second serve will be more of a factor here.

I actually believe Murray playing five sets while Djokovic has been idle for two days hurts Novak. It's been proven time and again in this era that five set semifinals do not matter one bit in the finals. The winners tend to be the guys that slogged through the five set gauntlet.

VIKA!!!!!!!

Tremendous effort from Li despite her two nasty falls. And Shriver and Evert are still ****ing terrible.

...I now I go sleep for 5 hours.

That Li Na has some sexy legs.
