The Tobey Maguire/Peter Parker Thread

To me, keaton is still the best batman but depending on how TDK turns out, my opinion may change.

Comics are only still frames with word balloons. Thus it up to the reader to envision the motions and dialog in their head. We each will see and hear something different. You obviously saw and heard Peter talking and moving differently in your head. To me though Tobey did an excellent job, but that's what I envisioned Peter to be and act like. This is all opinion and no one could ever be proven right or wrong. It's all up to personal interpretation of what we see and hear in our own minds. What I'd like to say though is Peter Parker did start of as a dork with not a lot of self-confidence who was a little clumsy. So he could be identifiable to lots of people. As he was Spider-man through the years he became more confident. In the 1st movie he's just getting his powers & uncle Ben dies and in 2nd he's depressed and losses his powers. So we haven't really gotten a chance to see a super confident Peter/Spider-man. The comics get to show him every month for decades. So there we get to see the light hearted wise-cracking super-confident side of him. The movies however can only focus on a short time frame of his life. So they choose to show the periods in his life when everything seems to be going against him. Instead of the time when Peter/Spider-man is on top of the world. I feel this makes for a much better and more interesting movie. Which is why the Spider-man movies are my favoite comic book films. But to each his own.

  Every word.

I think with SM3 Tobey is going to get his chance to show that wise-cracking super-confident side that many here have been bemoaning all this time. And as you describe here, I think it's been a great progression of his character to bring that confidence to full fruition in the third picture. The new extended clip certainly reveals a much more confident, forceful Peter. He's taking the piss outta his best friend and doesn't even flinch doing it until it's all said and done. Then the angst returns. Additionally, Avi Arad says Tobey is getting his chance to be really funny in this movie too. I think it will be a great ride with all the necessary ingredients of action, romance, humor to make this film be the biggest and best of the three. This is possible due to the culmination of all the backstory leading up and supporting the finale. Like he did with many on Spider-man 1, I think Tobey may truly surprise many of his naysayers in this movie. Can't wait to see if he does.

Exclusive Interview: TOBEY MAGUIRE DOES WHATEVER A SPIDER CAN AGAIN FOR SPIDER-MAN 3
Actor had to do more intense physical work than ever before for third Marvel Comics film
By: EMMANUEL ITIER
Published: 3/7/2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 1

“Does whatever a spider can,” seems to be a phrase synonymous with actor Tobey Maguire the man behind the mask of SPIDER-MAN. In this third film, Maguire has to face more villains and more physical challenges with fight choreography. Through it all he still has a good sense of humor about himself and his face time in the film in contrast to SPIDER-MAN’s mask time.

Come swing on a web with iF MAGAZINE as we get inside the mask and have some down and dirty time with Maguire and get the scoop on what could be SPIDER-MAN’s final chapter.

iF MAGAZINE: How do you handle being a good guy and a dark guy [Venom] in this movie?

TOBEY MAGUIRE: First of all, I don’t really look at it like a good guy or a bad guy, although he does make some choices that I think are going to be a little shocking for people, and fans will be surprised at Peter going down that road. This is something [director] Sam [Raimi] and I worked a lot on because we don’t want to lose the audience caring for the character, but we do want to push it. We don’t want to make it too scary, we want it to be dark, but still have some humor and some fun with it. So we’re constantly working on the exact tone of it. I had a lot of fun doing it as an actor. There’s a different side of Peter Parker.

iF: Do you ever think about life after Spiderman?

MAGUIRE: Well first of all, if I don’t want to do more movies, I don’t have to do anymore movies. So that’s up to me, which wasn’t necessarily up to me before this film, because I was contracted to three of them. I’ve had a great time doing them, I’ve enjoyed it and I’m glad I’ve done all three movies. We may make more of them or a fourth one, if there’s a story worth telling and a right team of actors and Sam is on board, then I would consider doing a fourth one.

iF: How did Spiderman change your life?

MAGUIRE: A lot of things changed in my life. I can’t exactly attribute certain things in my life to that. I think everything affects everything. But certainly I’m more recognized. At first, I was a little less comfortable with it. It was a little harder for me to function normally publicly. But really, I’ve just gotten more comfortable with it and I don’t really sweat it as much anymore.

iF: How would you react if a girl said no to marrying you?

MAGUIRE: I just couldn’t imagine! It just wouldn’t happen to me! [Laughs] Maybe I would be careful and make sure what I knew the answer would be before I asked.

iF: What about the ring in the movie? I heard it was made by your fiancé.

MAGUIRE: She made the locket. Kirsten wears the little heart locket in the movie and she made that. She didn’t make the ring.

iF: What do you think are the themes in this movie – it seems to be revenge?

MAGUIRE: Yeah, I think vengeance, forgiveness, there’s the big theme of the franchise with great power comes great responsibility which I think is a blanket idea of having Peter’s learning lessons in each movie, they may be slightly different lessons, but they can all fall under that umbrella. I think there are a lot of themes running through the film and it all depends what you get from it, I guess.

iF: There are three villains in this film, and maybe even four including you, the dark side, did you have a favorite?

MAGUIRE: Including me, I would probably have to say me.

iF: Did you like playing the villain?

MAGUIRE: I had a good time doing that. It was more of an internal battle. Building his story arc was fun in terms of the villains outside of myself, I think they are all so different and I appreciate them for what they are. Sandman was a villain from the comic books that I always wanted to see in a Spiderman movie. I was really excited about that. I think we tied him into Peter’s story line very well. Harry Osborn that was the cliffhanger from the second movie. That one was probably the most emotional.

iF: Do you have a mean wild side like your character?

MAGUIRE: I don’t know, I guess you have to ask that question to people who know me personally. I’m a whole person so I’ve got all kinds of stuff going on. I don’t necessarily present it to the press.

iF: Is there a significance of Peter Parker getting rid of the dark suit in a church?

MAGUIRE: The setting we felt would be dramatic and would have certain weight, but I don’t think anybody thought it would have a specific comment.

iF: Are you going to take a break from acting now that you’re a father?

MAGUIRE: I want to work and I also love being dad, so I’m going to figure it out as I go and try to figure the right balance. I did kind of clear out my schedule right when she was born for a little bit, so I could be really present. And I’m away from the house now working, so you just have to find a good balance.

iF: You don’t look very tired for a new father! Are you sleeping well?

MAGUIRE: Yeah, I’m sleeping pretty well. At first it was really tough. I feel good. I’m so used to not getting tons of sleep that to me it’s not even a big deal. It was at first, I’ve got to say, it was a really big deal, but she’s starting to sleep more in bigger chunks.

iF: How did you deal with fights in this movie?

MAGUIRE: I had more fights in this movie. I had to do more because there’s more with my face there, but it wasn’t really outside of the boundaries from what I’ve done before. This was more of the same type of stuff. For some of it, I could just show up and I’d be able to do it and for other stuff I would do rehearsals before hand.

iF: Is it hard getting back into Spider-man shape?

MAGUIRE: It’s a lot of work and I’ve said to myself, I don’t want to do the extreme thing that I’ve done in the past, which is like work out really hard. You know train like a boxer trains for a few months and then after your fight or after your show, you just completely let go which is what I’ve done in the past. I don’t think it’s very healthy for me physically or psychological, so I just want to maintain a balance. So, I’m not going to the extremes.

iF: Was it a conscious decision to show more of your face in this movie than in the others?

MAGUIRE: I’ve always told them it was more of a good idea to show my face! [laughs] We like to connect with the character. If you go away too long from Peter Parker you could create emotional distance from the character and what he’s going through, so it’s a balance of delivering the iconic image and hooking into the character.

iF: Are we going to expect more romance with Mary Jane and Peter Parker?

MAGUIRE: There’s lots of romance in the movie, definitely. It’s been a key element in both 1 and 2, and in 3. Their relationship is the heart of the movie.

iF: Are you romantic?

MAGUIRE: I think I’m romantic, I like to be thoughtful. I like surprises and to create them and to pay attention.

iF: What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for a woman?

MAGUIRE: I already went further than I wanted to go with that last question! Now you’re pushing me deeper, I can’t take it! [Laughs]

Agreed Bale is The Best actor in live action that has protrayed both Bruce Wayne & BATMAN excatly like the comics . :batty:
Without a single doubt to any educated Batman fan. And it will only get better come TDK when Bale feels even more comfort in the role, and just like the character he will be playing, he won't be a rookie anymore. Bale will no doubt get better with each film, where as Keaton magically had a worse performance in his sequel.

^ Agreed

Ok enough BATMAN talk let's get back on topic with SPIDER-MAN

I posted the new Tobey Maguire interview, let's get back on track by discussing the new interview shall we . :spidey:

I have no Doubt Spidey 3 will be a big success ( also believe it will surpass both the first & second films) and with that sony is going to want to make more movies with Sam & his team . I see The Lizard as being the prefect villian for spidey 4 , since Sam loves to connect the villians with Peter . The Lizard makes prefect sense, Doc Conners is Peter's science teacher (whom he respect greatly and looks up to him as a great man) suddendly transformers into a man Lizard bent on cause havoc . Like in TAS Peter should find a way to restore Doc conners to his former self without killing him .

iF: How did Spiderman change your life?

I'm gald to hear his much more comfortable being in the spotlight .

I'd say he'll be back. He might need a 2 or 3 year break to do other movies. And the rest of the cast and Sam will have to be on board. Along with a great script. But all those will happen.:yay:

IMDB has Dylan Baker listed as being in 3 and 4 lol. So we'll see were they take his character in 3. Also we gotta see what happens to Eddie Brock/Venom. The symbiote could find him in jail at the very end of 4 and show him breaking out as Venom. Also he leaves his cell mate muwa :woot: a nice little present.

What the....when did this turn into the Batman boards

I think a Batman reference is an acceptable comparison, that franchise along with Bond, has seen a number of title character recasts, and when Maguire hangs up his webs after this film, we will be left with the same situation the Batman franchise had. Who could trump what was already considered to many (not myself) as ideal casting?

You know what, it's a painful decision, but honsetly I would rather see him focus his skills on an Evil Dead 4. He's done his magic on the trilogy, what could be better than having 3 films in a set that are all fantastic movies. Let's give anothe crew the chance to input their vision on the character and let's see Raimi team back up with Campbell to kick some ass with a chainsaw and shotgun

What the....when did this turn into the Batman boards
Dude, we quickly mentioned it as a reference, and the conversation quickly moved back to its main focused. In a way, you continue the delay by referring back to comments already passed and no longer in discussion. LOL

You're great at this mod stuff ...

I couldn't think of anything I would want more :oldrazz:
