The Tobey Maguire/Peter Parker Thread

Glad to see others agree with me

Even if He wasn't to star in Spidey 5 and 6, He could defenitley star with the rest of the same Cast and Crew in Spidey4!.

I disagree, (1) he'd be too old and (2) It's a waste of time and pretty much pointless. If there 6 planned movies in total, Tmags and co should get tossed out since they've done their 3 and their contracts have ended. Lets finish off the final 3 with new blood. It revitalises and keeps the movies fresh and interesting.

So...Last night I celebrated Tobey's b-day by watching Spidey 2.1..I sang along when they sang him Happy B-day.:) :spidey:

I celebrated by taking my family to see SM3 on IMAX. It was my 8th and likely final viewing of SM3 in theaters (may yet sneak a dollar movie view in). Not too many years do I get to celebrate Tobey's birthday by drowning in his 10 foot wide sparkling blue eyes on a ginormously huge screen. Awesomeness!

He may be 32, but he sure doesn't look it.

Rebel Tobey from one of his most underrated movies:

Wow 8 times? I'm pretty sure I would've learned all the lines by now.
Nope. He looks like he's in his late 20s.

Don't know what movie that is, but he looks pretty cool in that last pic.

I hate this concept of everything must be a trilogy.

2 recasted movies are fine by me, and 4 with this cast is fine by me.

I don't need to see in 3's.

Tell me about it. Some movies can go longer than three, and even more movies should stop at two. There is nothing wrong with just one sequel. like terminator 2 or Kill Bill (In know it's not a real sequel). And nothing wrong with four, or five.

And why all the love for a trilogy when the third movie is almost always the worst.

Ride with the devil is the best movie he's ever done BUT he still got punked out by Johnathen Rhys Meyers' character.

I do think Ride with the Devil is one of his best movies and performances that is highly underrated (I tend to prefer Pleasentville, Seabiscuit and Spider-Man 2 as films, overall) and it and The Ice Storm are his and Ang Lee's most underrated movies.

But I wouldn't say JRM got the leg up on Maguire. In the movie he shoots him in the back. Maguire still bests him by the end and in one of my favorite scenes here:

How can you say that without even seeing his other performances. It's that kind of logic that irritates me, spideyhero12.
Anyway, RWTD is an awesome film, like DACrowe says, TMags had balls in this film and he had his finger shot off. I can't remember did he bang Jewel's character? I remember him marrying her though.

irritates you? how is that irritating. Spiderman is what got Tobey very famous which is one of the reasons it's his best role:o.

But for you to say its his best role when you havn't seen all his films is borderline madness. However, if you were to say, out of the TMags films you've seen, spider-man is his best, then it makes much more sense.

If we're talking performances, I'd say Red Pollard in Seabiscuit, his character in Ride with the Devil or Cider House Rules as his best performance.

But he gave a great Peter Parker (IMO) and gave a very sympathetic and popular performance in the Spidey movies (more the first two). His Spider-Man stands above all other superhero perofrmances in memorability other than Chris Reeve. I think Bale may be a better Bats in adaptation, but people remember Maguire's Spidey very well and is a credit to his acting to give such a broad yet nuanced performance.

But just because it is his most famous performance does not make it his best. He was already an indie star thanks to starring in Cider House Rules, Pleasentville and co-starring in Wonder Boys. Not to mention critical darlings The Ice Storm and the aforementioned Ride with the Devil. He was not a no-name when he was cast as Spider-Man, though.

Since you seem to delight in pissing and dissing on him as often as possible, I'd be curious to know, just how many of Maguire's films have YOU seen?

I agree, these are great samplings of Tobey's best. Also, he was actually quite accomplished in the short Oscar-nommed film "Duke of Groove". That short film put him on Ang Lee's radar resulting in his casting in "The Ice Storm". He was very well known in the industry prior to Spidey. With the public, not so much.

RWTD is my favorite non-SM Tobey performance because of the character's arc and the range Tobey was afforded in that role. He starts out semi-naive and prejudicial, then both hardens AND softens and changes his belief structure in various ways throughout the film. Jake Roedel is a different person by the end of the film's journey but still seems to maintain that quiet innocence he has in the first few frames. A testament to Tobey's skill at character development. Another highly nuanced performance.

As you know, not many folks at the Hype appreciate nuanced performances. If it's not a loud and animated posture, some people just think it's crap acting. They just don't get the beauty of that acting style. I think the majority of Maguire naysayers in his Peter Parker portrayal are in that category of those who don't "get" a mature performance.
