The Trekkie Conundrum

I've been a Trek fan since I was 10..I grew up watching Next Generation (still the best), DS9 and Voyager all the way through. I like the original films, and most of of the original series. But this new one lost me at the "alternate timeline/reality" thing. I was thinking that it might actually fit in to established events, but apparently I was wrong.

I get a vibe this is going to be like when the Red Sox won in 2004...suddenly fans were everywhere, claiming they had been fans forever. No you haven't, you crazy bandwagoner :cmad:

then go home, pout and watch all that stuff over and over....:oldrazz:

I see your point. But shouldn't a team, franchise, movie, etc thank and welcome newcomers?

Who gives a rats ass if a person says "I've been a Sox fan since 1986."

"But I've never heard you talk about them!!!"

So to establish fandom, I must walk about town, at least three times a week, wearing a Star Trek shirt, and speaking in Klingon?

I'm a HUGE Atlanta fan - this you know. But I do not own any thing by the Atlanta Thrashers. And you seem like a person that would mock me if I insisted on watching the series, if the Thrashers went to the Playoffs.

I know your post was written with seriousness, sprinkled with jest - as was mine.

Enjoy the point.

Why? The events on Romulus take place beyond the timeline from Voyager and the last movie. That fits in with established events. Those who have a legitimate complaint may be the ones upset by the fact that this new timeline allows for the fact that everything we know about the franchise starting at Kirks birth didnt happen.

No, I hate bandwagon jumpers also.
Dont start showing up and rooting for a team because they are now successful.

To the OP-Trekkies are in a different category. They just are. They are like the people who read Silver Surfer.

To the truest form, yes. A la Gary - and his ability to root for the entire SEC.

But my point was much simpler than that.

When I was younger Deep Space 9 was one of the the best shows on tv, it was riveting at times.
Yet admitting you watched it in school was like admitting you had aids.

:woot: Yes! Its just like when the Sox won and every filthy no good degenerate Cub fan suddenly jumped aboard with their Sox Jerseys like you couldn't smell the urine anymore. Bandwagoners are the worst.

Side note: I watched a doc/bio about Christian Bale on Reelz the other day.Theres a group of people who dress up in period clothing and have conventions for his movie "Newsies".:oldrazz:

I loved the movie, I don't mind that they changed some stuff up as long as the changes are like this. When's the last time a sci fi movie made you laugh, had good action and some actual touching moments (that starting scene was damn touching)? Better than any trek movie in a long ass time.

Too true. I've never worn a costume or been to a convention, I just like the shows. But as a Trek fan in the 90's, I was shunned worse than Lepers in the Bible.

I remember when TNG first came on TV....I was relatively young and heard some kids talking about it....then one of them said something like "my dad says Star Trek is for nerds" or something....so I kept quiet....

That's a damn shame. I always hated how people just catagorize someone like that. They should at least watch it first. This is what's society's all about. Catagorizing and what's accepted.

I always hate that some people will hesitate to answer if they like Star Trek or not until I tell them that I'm a Trekkie.

That's why my default answer is usually "seen some of the movies"

My grandma is a huge trekkie since the first show came out in the 60's and was even one of the people who wrote to CBS to not cancel Star Trek. So over 40 years now. She hasn't seen the film yet, but she says it looks good and fresh.

I'm a fan myself but only of the original series. I have all three seasons on DVD and still surprised at how fresh and deep the stories are in quite a bit of episodes. I must say, the movie was incredible and will be really good at getting people into Star Trek. I don't think the stigma of being a Trekkie will be so negative now.

Also I've been on a few boards (primarily IMDB) and a lot of Trekkies aren't too happy with the film. From what I read, a lot of them think it isn't cerebral enough and has too much unnecessary action. And, of course, the alternate reality they created. Also, they complain that the new Sulu doesn't act like George Takei enough and that the new Uhura isn't curvy and busty like Nichelle Nichols. :whatever:

I've been reading the crying going on at Trek BBS, AICN, etc....their tears give me joy....

I've been to a couple of Star Trek conventions, had autographs from ST actors (but can't find them now), and I used to watch alot of TNG (which I like slightly more than TOS). I won't really categorize myself as a Trekkie, though, since aside from TNG I didn't watch most of other series like DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. I watched most of the movies but I stayed away from Nemesis because I heard how bad it is. I'm also not a walking Wikipedia of Star Trek, but I'm gonna go see the new ST movie since the WOM has been phenomenal.

Give this man a button.

I wanted to throw my little worthless two cents into something I couldn't help but notice around these parts that kinda irks me:Seems to me the preamble "Well, I'm not a trekkie but" Has started far too many sentences for my taste. I dont like it. Its like you're trying to tell me you're not a blind sheep who'll eat anything served at the troth of Trek.
"As a Christian,..." or "Well , as a Cannibal...."

I myself never wore another humans flesh as a mask, yet still enjoyed Silence of the Lambs,.. Strange I know.

Wow, just got back the IMDB boards. They are tearing this movie apart! Why can't people just be happy? The movie was really good, & I think they got all the characters right. Even Chekov's.

I really like how they have done the alternate reality stuff, because now Abrams can do whatever he wants with the series. Very clever me thinks.

I myself will never be a trekkie. My heart will always belong to the Sith/Jedi. But this movie wore a short skirt, tight top, & came pretty close to seducing me.

Just wanted to thank both of you guys for effectively making me poop with laughter here at work. Great fuc*ing job. xD!!!!!

I remember years ago saying how I like Trek.....a guy I know asked if I was one of those geeks that dress up in pointy ears and funny costumes....I said "No, I like to take my shirt off, paint myself blue and white and act like an idiot during a snowstorm watching a bunch of dummies chase each other up and down a field trying to steal a wierd looking ball from them....ohhhhh sorry, I forgot, that's what you do."

Ha! That's exactly why I gave up on being cool a long time ago. Whenever someone asks me if I like Star Trek, I respond "Everything but Voyager, Enterprise, and about half the movies. Okay, fine, maybe Voyager."

Strong obnoxious trekkie presence in the theater I saw Trek in. These jokers literally laughed at everything on screen.

Kirk: My name is James Kirk.
Trekkie: HAHAHAHA OMG ROFL U SO CRAZY!!!!11

This one dude laughed like a truckstop woman who's been chainsmoking for 40 years. Trekkies FTL.

Besides that the movie was kick ass. Star Trek >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wolverine. Chris Pine and the dude who played Spock were completely amazing in their portrayals, just nailed the characters. Spoilers:

I shat bricks when I found out it was Spock was laying wood to the black chick instead of Kirk, but then I realized that Kirk maintained his awesomeness by hammering the green chick.
Movie was great, experience not so great because of the trekkie presence.
