The Trekkie Conundrum

Some are out and some are still in box....he tends to buy 2 of everything

The only action figure I've never opened, is an exceptionally rare Samus Aran figure. 1 of only 500.

thats even worse... means there hording at this someday hope they will be worth something.... and it's actually pretty rare that any kinda figures these days are.... at best they double.

I've bought a bunch of different figure that I haven't opened yet. I hope to have a good place to display them some day...till then they stay in their packaging are boxed away. If I never get the chance...I will pass them on to someone and they can do with them what they want.

I'll bet one million $ that The Prime derective was inspired by Uatu and the Watchers.

Just looked it up. Manic, I HAVE read shortpacked and it's awesome. I discovered it a few months ago but haven't been back since. I'm gonna have to bookmark it so i can come to it more often.

But as I noted a few posts ago, I think toy collecting is the new "trekkie". It's not that we toy collectors are weird per se, I just feel like the hobby is more misunderstood than say video games or comic books or anime. Especially now. In the early 90's, you could always say,"it's going to be worth something" but given that toy values mean much less than they used to, you can't really claim that anymore and you pretty much have them cause you like them.

My apartment for example looks not unlike a comic store minus the comics(I have *****loads of comics too but they're all in long boxes in my big hallway closet). My action figures are literally hanging up or on shelves all over my apt. The living room, dining room, bedroom and even my refrigerator are covered in them. I told my girlfriend when she moves in and we get married in a few months, i'll consolidate it to maybe one little wall of my apt. but for now, i'm letting the nerdiness all hang out. But people look at me like i'm a trekkie when they see it.

After the new Trek film has run it's course, do you guys think that things will go "back to normal", i.e. trekkies are socially ridiculed and people think you're an weirdo if you bring up you dig trek.

I've noticed that when star wars flicks come out, EVERYBODY talks about them and then a month later(unless you're a kid), they look at you like a freak if you're still talking about it in any way shape or fashion.

I think people who's rooms mirror the 40 year old virgins yes... theres an acceptable way to figure collect, and a non acceptable...

Imo as a figure collector and as a gay man with some style ;) and also knows how womens brains work.. think... its a huge no no if...

-You collect everything under the sun
-keep everything in packages
-your 20'something and 90% of your room looks like toys r us

Now a big big key factor is display. I really only collect marvel legends.... and I have them displayed in pretty cool displays all in action poses, I put alot of work into it, and the detail shows... so in all honesty I actually get alot of compliments when people first see it. I've had a few people actually enjoy looking through it all and just in awe about it. I've probably only had one negative reaction towards it in my life.

umm last i checked its never shifted... trekkies are still socially ridiculed... liking a star trek movie does not = trekkie.

People will always make fun of the Trekkies who wear Starfleet uniforms, Vulcan ears, Klingon... anything, use catchphrases from the shows, and can name/recite episodes of any of the Trek shows other than the Tribbles one.

However, people will be less likely to ridicule you if you say "I like Star Trek" because at least now everyone can talk about a movie without alienating people.

I Just watched some Episodes of the Original seires and I'm turning into a trekkie!!
What's the cure?

Enough women and booze to keep you away from the TV at all times. You can't really cure Trekkism. You can only fight it off by having other things to do when it comes on TV. And thanks to Star Trek having 5 series syndicated across 5 cable networks and countless local stations, not to mention 10 movies that could air on TV at any given moment, you can find Star Trek on TV at just about any hour of the day.

Not to mention any references to Star Trek on various TV shows that will make you nostalgic enough to go find a certain Trek episode on the internet.

on my TV...SciFi runs TNG and Enterprise reruns and Spike runs Voyager reruns but only at 2 in the AM....I haven't seen DS9 anywhere

I thought Spike was still airing DS9. Then again, I thought G4 was still airing TNG. It's impossible to keep track of who's airing what. TVLand still has TOS, right?

TVLand airs TOS on Sundays at 6 or 7 am...theres a local station that airs it late night on saturdays I think

And the Fact that I have to use the Vulcan salute during certain Religous Holidays

I've decided to slip into the cold grip of Trekkieness. I just can't fight.

I think I can see TOS on G4 and TV Land and then TOS Remastered on WWOR or WPIX. Then I can see TNG and Enterprise on Sci-Fi. Then VOY and DS9 (occasionally) on Spike.

Also, Thor, how do you feel about Leonard Nimoy bastardizing an important religious hand gesture and turning it into the Geekiest hand sign ever?

It's simple. Give these people the middle finger and they will shut up.

If they don't, well, they're making themselves look like idiots by *****ing still.
