And Mark Twain isnt really on Bill's level now is he.

I was simply defending the reputation of my country and it got a bit out of hand.
That depends on who you ask, and whether or not you're judging the merit of their work based on their nationality.RogueLDN said:And yet you are still to note anything i was incorrect in stating?

I like Twain, but simply in regards to the sheer volume of work, of all different sorts and teh way in which he used tragedy and comedy and history to entertain seriously demanding audiences puts bill at the top every time for me personally. We have a replica of the globe theatre over here and its a real experience to see the plays as they would have been originally performed on the stage they were written for. If you ever get to england then take a look.
Well, I wouldn't fault Twain's work because he was fascinated with the culture around him. Oddly enough, during the time period that he was an active writer, the Antebellum South experienced a sort of explosion in the popularity of Shakespeare, and Shakespeare's plays would be performed all around the South. Twain himself was a Shakespeare fan, if I remember correctly. My main problem with Shakespeare is that some of his work is pretty shallow, although shallow Shakespeare has more depth than most literary works could ever hope for.RogueLDN said:Literature can be analysed form many angles, I actually studied Reading American Culture as a Uni course this year, some of the texts were good but it was preoccupied with american nationalism and african-american culture. I didn't realize it was the duty of our military to crack down on terrorism in Canada, pretty sure that's the mounties, or whomever's, job.
the_joker said:Huh? Russia wouldn't join the war until Turkey joined in and only agreed to help defeat Japan after the Nazi had been defeated. And also, I believe they even signed a treaty with Nazi to remain neutral when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. America became Britain's ally later on when pearl harbour was destroyed. It is well known that America didn't originally want to get involved, but in the end had to when it became clear that axis superpowers' ambitions didn't just stop at Europe.
As for Britain, yes the country declined 1945 onwards, and then was on the verge of an economic collapse during the 80s. But since then, Britain has survived and prospered well and became one of the world's leading countries. Why else do you think that France and the other European countries want us to join EU properly and adopt the European constitution? Because they know we are a valuable asset. Also as for America being the most powerful nation on Earth, I thought Europe was No.1 in the list of leading nations.
Anyways, I'm going off the point. But I needed to correct your facts.
Point is really, is Britain is now one of America's firmest allies at the moment in this so called war against terrorism and they are darn lucky to have us.
And one thing I don't understand is why the Americans keep referring to us as “European”. We may be part of Europe but we still have our own individual identity. We're British, not French, not German or any other European.
And just to put the record straight, our women are not hairy. And we do not have bad teeth! How bloody charming you all are.![]()

I have studied the advance of the Red Army and the fact that America and Britain werej ust their to stop the advance of the Russians into western europe.
And technically the majotity of people in England are Germans. The Saxons and Angles came from west germany and the vikings that settled the north originated in norther germany. And the rest are celts.
