Comics The Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Thread!!!

interesting ideas there, yea i dont ucsm is a clone its pretty clear he is peter why would they do anything like that with the main title of ultimate universe. I hope we figure out who this other guy is soon.

I hope he is a clone. And then I hope Ultimate Universe ends.
Ultimatum would have been better if they just finished off the Universe.

Wouldn't it be great if the spiderman in UCSM was a clone? then mysterio would feel pretty !@#$%^&&^%$. imagine the look on his face!

i doubt they would say ucsm would be a clone it would just be a dumb move.

No dumber than approving the script for Ultimatum. :o

Exactly. Wanna do something different than 616? Actually permanently replace the clone with the original. Then kill the entire universe.

Something i've always wondered: why won't spot show up again? i thought he looked really cool!

I have never loved USM, it always strayed so far from the original ASM conception of what Pete was all about that I rationalized it as a different character pretty much altogether. But, it's just getting stranger and stranger. Everyone (practically) knows who he is and Aunt May's house has become sort of downscale version of the Avengers' Mansion. Now that the art has turned so cartoony...I don't know. I think once I hit issue 10, USM may fall from my pull list.... Pity that as ASM gets good, USM sort of...stumbles along.

How did he stray so far away from what Peter was all about, exactly? To me, Peter seems to be the one character whose characterization was the most subtly changed. May, Gwen, MJ, Octavius, Osborn, almost all of the characters changed in a big way somewhere, but not Peter.

The world in itself is very different, more grounded in reality, which explains the whole "no more pictures of Spider-Man because, man, was that stupid and unbelievable in the long run" and "a lot of people knows my identity or my face", but Peter is really close to his 616 version, one of the closest I suppose.

I'm old skool tho. I liked the Peter Parker who had no real friends, who was a tormented adolescent. Who was a wallflower, not the guy who'd have two fabulous babe girlfriends and who kept his identity a secret in order to spare his family. The emo-hot guy with the jazzy job and hot women hanging on his arm was not the Pete I preferred. To me, Peter Parker was about loss, about tragedy, while Spider-Man was about success regardless of what the odds might be. If I were writing ASM or USM, he'd be the lonely kid who had a rocky, difficult life. While Spidey would win no matter the odds. Post Ditko, once JRSR came aboard, Pete moved into soap opera territory. That's ok too, it's just a different characterization. But I still pine away for the Parker as tragic character and S-M as heroic character. That particular characterization, however, has never formed the core of the USM version of Peter Parker. So while there were things I've liked about USM, it's never quite been the same character to me.

Well...if you think about it, Peter was never that much of a loner. In almost every iteration of the character, Peter's had a wide array of friends and cast members. Yeah in the early Ditko days, Peter was still kind of this awkard geek but he eventually grew to have quite a lot of friends. Even some of his enemies (flash thompson, liz allen) grew to like and respect Peter. The whole "lonely geek" aspect of Peter was never really explored in any of Spidey's incarnations really.

Except the very first. JRSR took over on ASM 39, and the character started to change quite a bit thereafter. Betty Brant, for example, was first drawn to be kind of homely. Gwen was sort of a ***** who taunted Pete, but secretly sort of dug him, because she was a science geek as well. And Pete was very much a loner. Sure, the comic had a large cast, but most of that cast, except Betty and Aunt May, pretty much teased Pete. All he seemed to have were enemies, both in his "real" life and his life as Spidey. Part of the draw was that he could lash out against his super villain enemies, while he had to bear the taunts of his "regular life" enemies. I always thought that was pretty cool. Back in the day, about the only friends Pete had were Betty and Johnny Storm. I always liked that version of Pete more than the direction JRSR took him. And he wasn't a loser, he was just a misfit, a loner. But hey, I guess the thing can get stale if he stays the same all the time. I just thought the direction he was going under Lee/Ditko was a lot more interesting than the one that emerged--one that was more bland and predictable. There's a great interview with Allen Moore where he talks about how revolutionary ASM was when he appeared, but that once Ditko left and JRSR became the primary artist/plotter, the character became much more mundane and Moore stopped reading it after a year or so.

actually, he did have some friends that did not tease him. take robbie robertson for example. (although he was sort of a better friend to spider man but their the same people anyways.)

also, who is betting money the shroud's gonna be helping pete with mysterio next ish?

I think the art of the new series is taking away from the story.

Bendis is still telling some interesting stories, new concepts for Spidey to work in, as its a Post-Ultimatum world.

But the art of Peter/Spidey is horrible.

Well, I like Lafuente's art, mostly. If I had to say I ab****ely hated something, it would be Gwen in issue 4. There were time where she was really ugly!

I donno, does it take talent to draw like that? The art style seems really awkward for me.
It's too cartoony. Too goofy.
It just doesn't fit! I can't even read the book anymore.

I think Bendis purposely chose this guy because it probably doesnt take him too long to draw the issues. I guess bendis prefers a cartoony artist that could deliver on time over a more realistic artists that would likely cause delays. Just my two cents.

actually, i think the art is not cartooney at all. but i do agree that gwen is ugly...

I wonder if this change in artist is a good sign. Has anyone seen Mr. Miyazawa's run in Runaways and if so was his art any good?

Ok seriously, WHAT IS WITH BENDIS AND THE MANGA ARTISTS??? Takeshi Miyazawa is the one who drew Spiderman Loves Mary Jane...ugh!

OK... I definitely prefer Lafuente over Miyazawa.

Ultimate Comics Spidey should have one of those electronic song things like the birthday cards which play Happy Birthday when you open them, and blast out the theme from Party of Five whenever they cut to the Parker home...
