Warren Ellis and Cary Nord really nail this one imo. No knowledge about the Ultimate universe is really necessary for enjoying this one, just understanding of the basics of Iron Man and Hulk.

The study of the Hulk on Venus and Mars was incredible. We'll see how the whole thing pans out, but the first issue has excited me more than any other "superhero" comic in a while.

Its beauty is in the science fiction thus far. But it's likely The Leader will become a common foe for both "heroes", creating a more comic-like story (which is appropriate and satisfying).

Id vs Ego

Hulk vs. Iron Man

let's hope this one doesn't experience the endless delay of another unnamed Ultimate Hulk vehicle.

Heard some good reviews for this, might just pick up the trade though.

The art looks pretty good, that said, Ultimate so nyah.

i like Ellis, but it's too close to the WWH throwdown for my comfort.

It's too much like the WWH fight because it stars the same characters? Yes, that makes plenty of sense. And they fight for the same reasons, too! Oh my, Ellis totally ripped off Pak! What a hack!

(I rhymed, just to bring all your attentions to this almighty fact.)

I just read this issue today, a few days late, but I'm really behind on my comics reading. Great, great issue.

Nord nails the art, and Ellis's plot set-up and script are actually pretty top notch, which, after the Ultimate Galactus fiasco (that was Ellis, yes?) is much appreciated.

While the TC is to a degree right, that there's no prior knowledge of the Ultimates necessarily needed, it would help for there to be. Ellis does a nice job referencing some stuff that happened in Ultimates and Ultimates 2. And he really nails the character of Tony Stark without really trying to redefine him - what works works, after all. All of which is nice to me, as a reader of Ultimates and Ultimates 2.

As much as I'm going to read Ultimates 3 and enjoy Loeb/MAD, I've got to say, if Ultimate Human's subsequent issues follow up and deliver on the first, then the team of Warren Ellis and Cary Nord should have been the selection for Ultimates 3.

I wasn't planning on picking this up, but then I saw the names on the cover and decided to give it a try. Was pleasantly surprised.

Does anyone know what Cary Nord was doing before this? He left Conan awhile ago.

It had good points and bad. Ultimate Leader being [Blackout]Pete Wisdom[/Blackout] was kind of lame, in the way that all Ellis' Ultimate excursions tend to be lame.

Whoa, that is lame. Ellis loves him some [BLACKOUT]Pete Wisdom[/BLACKOUT], though.

Yeah, the entire Ultimate Galactus trilogy was a waste, and I'm generally not impressed by Ellis stories at Marvel. This promises to be a simpler story, though, I hope, and maybe that'll make for a better story from him this time around. The first issue was definitely promising.

As for the [BLACKOUT]Pete Wisdom[/BLACKOUT] thing, though, I maybe rolled my eyes at it a little bit, until I realized I have no idea what the original Leader's real name is.

It was an issue designed to provide backstory on Wisdom. Considering he's been in the book since the first issue, this issue could have been a first - well, no, not really. That wouldn't have worked well. Nix that.

I thought it was kinda nifty. It's nice to see a writer introduce a character and provide backstory. When's the last time we saw that? BKV's introduction of Longshot?
