What Darth and MF said is true, but I have to admit, the thought crossed my mind, too. Just seems odd that he, or any director, would go after an adaptation to something that was adapted so very recently. I guess he was just captivated by the story that much that it didn't matter to him. Or maybe he just didn't care either way.
I'll probably see it next week, but I kind of feel like I shouldn't have watched the Swedish film, though. I know, ideally, I should treat them as separate beasts, but I think it's going to be hard to do so for me since both are so close to one another. And it didn't help that the Swedish film was just really damn good. It obviously had some lesser production values than this film will have, but it was just a really well crafted and acted film.
