There are plenty of countries where the men need to complete a certain number of years of National service. Israel, Switzerland, Singapore...just to name a few.

I'm from Singapore and enlisted shortly after my last year in the polytechnic. I signed on by the end of my first year of service.

It's alright. And the only major thing I ever did was the humanitarian relief in Aceh after the tsunami. I left shortly after. No war stories from this soldier. Just training goofs and fellow goofball troops.

Not even one of those we got really drunk and ended up killing a hooker stories? Lame.

Believe me, there were numerous drunk stories. As the designated Muslim, I was witness to several such incidents. Taiwan was where we almost got into a fight with a bunch of locals. Was pretty scary for me since I don't speak Mandarin or Hokkien.

Italy had national service until 2005. My italian friend almost ended up having to do it.

Sigh...yes...well Singapore thinks it has a lot in common with Israel. Small country, surrounded by "possibly hostile Muslim neighbors"...A lot of our training materials came from Israeli instructors in the early 60s. A lot of our tanks and weapons were sold to us from them.

I had a German colleague who told me his Service was about 6 months. I was stunned. What can you possibly learn in 6 months in terms of military training?

Oh God. That was one of the things I dreaded when I was in the army. It's tiring work, especially triple-concertina.

Anyway, Emerald Knights. Anyone seen it fully? I'm kind of on the fence about getting it since the Laira part was the only interesting part for me. Was the rest of the movie as good?

I think all countries should re-introduce National Service. Teach this kids running riot on the street some manners and discipline.

Greece as well, I can remember Frank Drmic (an Australian basketball player) going over there after tossing up whether the extra cash from playing ball in Europe would be worth the forced National Service (he was able to go over there as a Greek player which works around import player rules due to his family heritage).

People say that alot. I don't mind them doing national service but I don't thing they should do actual tours in wars and operations. Professional soldiers who see the army as a career and fully prepared for what being a soldier and all that entails will always do a better job than some kid who is forced to be in the army because of some law in my opinion.

If i'm in Afghanistan or Iraq the last thing I want to worry about is some kid who doesn't want to be there and who's heart isn't in being a soldier watching my back.

We got a minor (that is slowly turning into a major) problem with gang bangers joining the military and coming back to train their fellow gangstas how to fight urban warfare, not to mention stealing trucks full of military grade weapons.

People say that alot. I don't mind them doing national service but I don't thing they should do actual tours in wars and operations. Well yea, not actually send them out to wars unless they choose to.

But put them through boot camp for a year.

Wow really? That's some ****ed up ****. But like I said above, not necessarily send them to warzones or even give them combat training, but just stick them in boot camp for a year. Give em a bit of discipline.

That is just frightening the last thing the world needs is more vicious criminals with mire dangerous weapons

Yeah, of course it could just be hyperbole. We've had like 8 or 9 cops killed here in Chicago in the last year or two, and it's mostly been ambush tactics. People are saying this is possibly the problem.

It does seem like somebody is hunting down cops around here.

But i dunno, it'd be a change of lifestyle. A place where they can't get away with ****ing around. Force them to get clean from drugs and booze etc.
