The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending

I had good faith in the W siblings and was actually rooting for them. And then I saw Could Atlas.... which made me think they have just completely lost the plot. That movie was just preposterous to me.

This new one from the trailer also looks absolutely bonkers to me, I think it is an original screenplay which makes me wonder what absurdity it might be. Some space queens stuff and all.

During a time when studios primarily green light films that are based on established properties, Jupiter Ascending bypasses that mandate and this is the best the Wachowskis could come up with? It looks goddamn horrible. Studios will continue to disregard original concepts in favour of a remake/reboot of an established property, because they fear they'll have a "Jupiter Ascending" on their hands.

That's why I'm annoyed.

And that's a perfectly good reason to be annoyed. I would love more original films but this film isn't going to help us get more original films. The Siblings are too far up their own ass to know how silly the film looks.

As someone very fond of Speed Racer, decisions like this make me think they got lucky with the first Matrix.

I haven't even watched a single trailer for this because the plot synopsis sounds like its a middle school short story; very off putting. Not hard to see why it was moved and/or why the interest in this is non existent.

Terrible sign, but not surprising. I literally saw a trailer for this last night in the cinema.

I was REALLY looking forward to this movie. :( It looks very original compared to much of hollywood's films.

We may still like it. Just need to wait a little longer to see it. Films I like are all over the board, so I have hope it will still be entertaining.

I honestly saw nothing original whatsoever. A supremely cliched story, with more Wachowskis "borrowing" their visuals from video games and anime.

Always surprises me how much everyone has turned on The Wachowskis. The Matrix sequels weren't up to par, but I never thought they were bad. I loved Speed Racer. I loved Cloud Atlas. This doesn't look great, but I have an open mind. Sucks that it got delayed, but I'll still probably see it.

I am a big fan of Speed Racer, but the Wachowskis have not lived up to The Matrix. Not close. They were propelled to stardom on the back of originality and innovation, and they have not brought either since The Matrix.

Yep, agreed.
But of course. I am always right afterall Sundance. :)

This is pretty much how i feel. I was kinda excited about this one, but the moment i saw Tatum they kinda lost me :csad:
Pretty much.

It is an original idea, as in it's not an adaptation of some sort, but I wouldn't say it looks unconventional. It looks like a very by-the-books, tacky science fiction blockbuster that we've seen fail time and time again- which diminishes it's originality.

WB must go back in time to prevent this film from ever happening. :D

Oh perhaps they got lazy, your always more driven when your hungry. Look at people like George Lucas, James Cameron. Great idea men and film makers that lost their edge once they reached a certain plateau. The Brothers achieved something monumental with the first Matrix that changed the genre as a whole. Its a shame that their creative bone seems to have withered. Personally the biggest problem with the film from the get go is the two main star, they are not interesting enough neither do they have the star power to carry something like this. Then you have a problem with the premise which just seems boring and uninteresting, if this film flops I think the brothers would have burned their bridges with WB after all your only allowed so many flops before the studio thinks twice about giving the go ahead to your projects.

They should rename it Jump Street 23 and superimpose Jonah Hill next to Tatum whenever possible.

This

The plot sounds like a dozen science fiction stories we have seen in books, video games, tv shows or movies before.

we need to find out what happens in the second and third act.

offtopic. i think Cloud Atlas was a good movie. you need some balls to realese a movie like this to the general public on that budget.

The Wachowskis brothers peaked with the first matrix movie and have not be able to get back to that level of filmmaking. Same with m night.

Anyone who could bring Cloud Atlas to the big screen in a coherent manner which I felt they did deserves a lot of credit. I thought Speed Racer was fantastic visually with a ton of heart. The Matrix was phenomenal, the sequels…eh, ok. I have faith in them. I think the marketing for this movie has been horrendous (WB's fault not the W's) I'm hopeful this extra time will turn out something great. Im personally not going to piss all over it before Ive seen it. I remain hopeful.

Oh and I forgot to mention Bound...love it.
