Always interesting to see how people are so willing to judge something based on a bunch of nothing. I don't see how one can be excited nor dismissive based on this meatless tease.

Perhaps thats the problem, that they are introducing this with something entirely 'meatless.' It fails to garner any kind of excitement.

After 1 or 2 more big budget flops, I don't think they'll have the opportunity to continue making different stuff like this. Hence reverting back to their cash cow.

Cloud Atlas, despite flopping was independently financed, WB just distributed it.

They're never going back to the Matrix, I suspect that franchise has given them enough cash and clout to keep making grandiose projects all they want, regardless of box office fail.

I didn't see anything compelling in the trailer..........

That is not what I meant. What I am saying is they rip off anime and video games. They did the same with The Matrix films. It isn't an "inspired" by situation. It is a "I have seen that design before" situation.

oh, okay, gotcha. that's definitely true, too.

What's the difference between paying homage, inspired by, and ripping off?

I wonder how I would feel about this movie with different leads. I just can't take either Tatum or Kunis seriously in dramatic lead roles. Kunis always sounds like she is whining Meg style and Tatum is just so blah to me. I like both, but not in these kind of roles.

What's the difference between paying homage, inspired by, and ripping off?
Inspired by in a general look that parallels, but doesn't directly lift. You can see the storytelling and design parallels. Abrams Trek is definitely inspired by the original Star Wars films.

An homage would be something like Super 8 or Superman Returns. Clear as day what inspired it, and unabashedly praising that material. No attempt to hide it.

Ripping off is when you directly lift from others work and act like you came up with it yourself. Think Lucas and his ripping off of Herbert. While on the flip side he pays homage to Kurosawa in the same series.

This is all imo of course.

Here's what Channing's character looked like before the surgery.

Doesn't look too bad but just meh,Will probably watch it at the $1 movie theater when it's a few months old or wait for it on Netflix

I think the trailer looks great, or at least something I will definitely be willing to check out as a sci-fi geek. I kinda forgot Channing Tatum was in this though and I loathe Tatum...

I think, from what we've seen, the intent is actually a sorta hybrid of fantasy and sci fi. Hence why Tantum does look like he came from Narnia. Looks really interesting to me.

We don't even know what the whole plot consists of except for a couple blurbs, so that's where the curiosity lies.

Why do some people ***** about Mila Kunis' voice so much? I want to point out

1. Not everyone watches Family Guy. To those people who don't, her voice will not remind them of Meg.
2. More importantly, her voice will be dubbed when the movie is released in non-English speaking countries.

So the things some of you speak against her voice, would not be a problem for many viewers, esp. international ones.

For this movie to succeed, it just needs good visual effects, great actions and a simple storytelling. This is a teaser trailer, the movie is still in post production. Better stuff will be coming in the next few months, e.g. the chasing sequence they filmed in the Naural History Museum in London.

Is this a real post? Am I being punked? Because no one would seriously use the argument that she will be dubbed in non-English speaking countries to make such an argument. :woot:

Everyone has their definitions of what separates "ripping off" from "homage", but the bare bones of it is that when an artist acknowledges his source, it's considered an homage. It really is that simple, despite how complicated a situation people try to make it into. Like people talk about the Wachowskis "ripping off" something, but I don't think they've ever really denied their influences or what scenes they've borrowed (excluding The Invisibles, if you want to believe Grant Morrison, but that's crap anyway).

I think the only time it becomes more complicated than that is when you have a situation like Tarantino. He acknowledges his references both in interviews and in the movies themselves, very bluntly, but it almost feels like his movies are becoming pastiches of others works. That's a little blurry.

There are, I think, very few examples of legitimately ripping off. The only situation I can think of about it off the top of my head is A Fistful of Dollars being a psuedo-remake of Yojimbo, in which Leone did not give proper credit until forced to via a lawsuit. It happens, but people use the "ripping off" card a lot more than it actually happens.

Was that a real argument? Serious question.

Why is it hard to understand this argument? You do know some people in other countries choose to watch foreign language films dubbed in their own languages? Or do you ever watch a non-English movie dubbed in English?

It has nothing to do with her voice or performance, which is what we were talking about. So because she will be dubbed in some place, that changes her performance in English? It is a ridiculous argument to make, especially on an English speaking forum.

That isn't even remotely what he's saying lol. Goddamn, man.

Am I the only one who has no idea what the hell is going on in the trailer?

If not for the synopsis released earlier, I'd be in the same boat. I think the trailer was just to tease the technical aspect of the movie in the end.
