The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending

I get why they went with Tatum but ain't nobody checking for Kunis.

I think if they had one or the other, it might look okay. But the two of them together is just so... ugh.

I think it's the two leads. They just feel so out of place. I get why they went after popular actors but I just feel like neither Tatum or Kunis fit this type of movie. Maybe they'll surprise me, but I doubt it. Kunis wasn't very good in that Oz movie either. And Tatum proved that epics aren't his strong suit with "The Eagłe."

Yeah, I think the concept is sound on paper. The visuals look amazing, but every time I see a TV spot or trailer for Jupiter Ascending -- Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum stick out like a sore thumb, they're THAT miscast. (Everyone else seems fine.) I think WB would have an easier time selling the movie if the actors fit the movie, rather than the Wachowskis having final casting say.

I heard Natalie Portman was originally supposed to play Jupiter before they got Mila onboard. She would've been better.

Anyone else know who was in the running for Channing Tatum's role?

Portman... might have been better. It depends on which Portman we would have gotten. Because if it was Thor 2 Portman than maybe Kunis was the better option, haha.

No idea who else was in the running for Tatum's role. But yeah, Sean Bean, Redmayne and the other actors all look like they fit this film, and then... there are Kunis and Tatum sticking out.

Still would've been preferable to Kunis.

I have a feeling the Wachowskis were eyeing Cloud Atlas' Ben Whislaw for the role that Eddie Redmayne's playing.

Perhaps, but Redmayne is good and it looks like he fits that role.

I wonder though if they were targeting any of their Cloud Atlas actors for the lead roles and got shot down, since CA flopped. I think (maybe) Sturgess or Whishaw could have fit the part of a space elf better than Tatum. Doona Bae probably would have been a better fit for Jupiter too.

Actually, now that I think about it, the story of Somni and Hae-Joo Chang seems pretty similar to this movie.

That's a very accurate statement.

I will be seeing it, just not on opening weekend.

I agree with others here about Tatum being miscast. The trailers fall really flat because of him. Maybe it's the horrible makeup job. I keep waiting for his ears to fall off like in that hilarious Mr.Peepers bit with The Rock and Chris Katan where they hump Will Ferrell and The Rock's fake ears start falling off...

Kunis didn't bother me so much.

The Wachowskis obviously have a fetish for wooden actors (yes he can be good in comedies). :o

i was hyped for the original cut of the movie. thats now over. they rewrotte, reshoot and recut the movie. i hope we get a detailed description of the original story.

i will watch it for the visuals. i think there is something original about them.

They did those things to try and save the film. It's unusual to pull a film weeks before it's release, the story about that being done because the visual effects weren't ready sounds like pure ********. Allegedly the film tested very poorly and the studio got scared.

Hopefully the film is better than what the studio thinks that it is. Studios are often clueless after all.

Whoa really? So they reshot and rewrote a bunch of stuff? I just figured they knew they had a turd on their hands so they sent it where movies go to die: February.

There's no proof to that. Sheer speculation.

You said they rewrote, reshot and recut the movie.
Which they didn't. It seems to me it was more about release date competition and financial quarters than quality of product.

the designs are amazing. very original for a hollywood movie IMO.

Eddie Redmanye is like, "you have to burn all copies of this film". :funny:
