The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending

are superhero fans really so against weird designs in a scifi movie? that it looks weird and stupid is the best part. :awesome::lmao:

They did those things to try and save the film. [...]

Hopefully the film is better than what the studio thinks that it is. Studios are often clueless after all.

Paramount pulled G.I. Joe 2 from its June 2012 date and moved it to March 2013. People were thinking they did some reshoots, but it was mostly to convert the film to 3D.

And I hate bringing Tatum's other movie up, but apparently Steven Soderbergh said Magic Mike tested poorly with audiences, but ended becoming a huge success. I don't think that's going to be the case with Jupiter.

And about the clueless studios, you're right... WB didn't do a great job hyping up Edge of Tomorrow, which had critical reviews on its side weeks prior to release. That movie would've brought in more money had the studio stuck to spring 2014, rather than early June.

i didnt know that Doona Bae from Cloud Atlas was in this movie. the clips dont look good. i think the Wachowskis dont know how to use digital cameras. when they used film it looked better.

The trailers I've seen... I think Jupiter Ascending has a nice filmic look to it. The main problem is that no one is talking about it three weeks from release, which is a bad sign.

I wanna see this for the visuals. We'll see if it's good. Sometimes it's hard for trailers to sell a movie properly, so who knows...

It will most likely tank, though, regardless of quality.

You are correct that test screening is not some exact science.

Yeah we are three weeks away and the hype for JA is tepid as all get out. I wonder what the early tracking numbers say. I mean I think it could get a 25-30million opening at best but it really needs to be doing double that number.

I have more hope for the Fantastic Four film then this. (none at all)

I may not end up liking this movie but I know one thing I will never be able to say that it was lazy. The Wachowski's are passionate folk, it just seems like they have very specific sensibilities.

I think it's exciting to have a huge scale space opera that's an original creation and isn't adapting stuff from another media for once. It's a nice throwback to when creating your own mythology mattered as much or more as how well you interpreted someone else's. That alone earns all the goodwill this film gets from me at this point... it would be a good thing if this did well. It's weird how some folks will sooner make the underdog their punching bag than root for it.

Agreed.

The visuals look fantastic. Aside from seeing Channing Tatum with elf ears , that's kind of jarring.

Whoa, I had forgotten that Giacchino was doing the score for this!

It's got a very talented team behind it, so I think it does warrant a look. I don't mind Tatum nor Kunis, never have so that has no bearing on it.

I see Eddie Redmayne has been taking a course on Villainous Sinister Whispering.

Have there been any advance screenings of this? I'm curious to see if WB is gonna keep it on lockdown until its release or actually show a little faith in it.

Ya know, as much I've laughed at Channing Tatum as a space elf, despite the cheesy dialogue and his apparent miscasting...I do want to see this. I'm not even a fan of any of the Wachowski's work outside of the first Matrix, but I'm always here for big, ambitious, imaginative space opera, even if it doesn't turn out to be a very good movie at the end of the day.

But yeah, at this point - 3 weeks out and no buzz - I'll be shocked if this isn't a huge flop.

Yes. But there is a reviews embargo until 24 hours prior to release.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing – plenty of good movies have had reviews embargoes (David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for example).

All it means is that Warner Bros. wants to control and protect the Jupiter Ascending brand by including positive reviews in the marketing campaign during the week of release.

It's necessary when you're putting so much money on a non-franchise property.

According to Variety, Jupiter Ascending topped the TV ad spending charts this week to the tune of $10.3 million.

The campaign is ramping up.

Warner Bros. clearly believes in their product.

But I agree that a lot more is yet to be done to get asses in seats.

Something tells me there is a WB nametag with "max314" on it.

Just kidding. Or am I?

I wonder how well WB pays employees who invade internet forums to build buzz for their films. Maybe max314 can share?

Most of the time when reviews are embargoed 24 hours before the release of the film the reviews are either poor or mixed. I'm not saying that Jupiter Ascending can't buck the trend but it's rare that films do buck that trend. Also Dragon Tattoo was directed by David Fincher so yeah good reviews aren't super shocking.

I'm really interested in what it's tracking numbers are looking like right now. Will it surprise or will it fail like everyone expects? I don't want "original" blockbusters to go away.

Max314 is totally not a real person but I responded anyway.
