Noticing the Triple H debate here recently there's one point that I've made here before that I think deserves repeating.
I totally agree that he should have put Punk over in the end, but I don't agree with the common thought that his inclusion in the angle was just so HHH could latch onto someone's popularity. I really think his inclusion was in a way needed.
At the time they were really pushing Punks pipe bomb promo style and anti-establishment nature. The feud with Cena was too young to completely run into the ground and there were really limited options for who else could go toe to toe with Punk on the mic. Alberto or Miz or almost anyone else would've been completely outclassed by Punk, not to mention not nearly provide him with enough material for kayfabe breaking pipe bomb promos.
Some of my favorite parts of that angle were Punk saying things we've all been thinking, and HHH was the perfect verbal sparring partner for that. I really feel Hunter's involvement kept Punks momentum going because he gave Punk someone to really go after in promos, while being good enough to not be outmatched. Again, I agree and wish that HHH ended up putting him over in the ring in the end, but I still think the whole thing still benefitted Punk because it gave him plenty of ammunition that he used in some great promos to further his character.
I agree, working with HHH helped further the angle and push Punk, but story-line wise they really butchered it after that match.
I think everything worked logically up to this match (Cena/Punk, ADR cashing in, Kevin Nash), after this match it just made no sense (Nash was texted by......himself?), and part of it is I think either WWE Creative had no idea what they were building to OR HHH just wanted a win over Punk and got one in there.
There was absolutely NO payoff to the conspiracy angle. And they had a perfect lead-in to that angle with the Mystery RAW GM. They also had the perfect candidate in Johnny Ace, who was getting major heat. But then it just dissipated and Ace went from feuding with Punk (which made sense) to feuding with Cena (which nobody cared about).
Yeah I think (maybe I'm naive to believe it) that there really was some wellness issue with Nash that messed up the original plan, because seriously look at his health*history plus he's an older dude. When that happened they pulled the trigger on the HHH match too soon and it screwed up the plan. Then after Punk won the title they turned him into too much of a clear cut face and they got cold feet about turning HHH heel to go after him again
His quads probably tore again...
Ah I recall the night (not so) fondly that I made that comment.![]()
Oh yeah, I remember now.
I fondly remember that night. Alot of us here in the thread were dying of laughter.
Duh.
Almost sounds like you're saying that as a bad thing.
This is real life bro. Real life.

Don't forget that Raw had a great divas division with Molly Holly, Trish, Lita, Jazz, Victoria, and Mickie James.
The only consistent flaw of Smackdown at the time was that they had divas like Torrie Wilson and Dawn Marie participating in boneheaded bisexual angles thanks to Stephanie McMahon lol.
Otherwise Smackdown was the A-show in terms of quality for quite a while until the later half of 2005 when the angles got a bit more Bone headed.
And this comes around to our fundamental disagreement about wrestling, as I don't think that taking the pin or not for someone is going to effect things one way or another.
Orton, Sheamus, and Punk all did well for themselves without ever getting over on Triple H, and at one point or another, every single one of these guys was the #2 guy behind only Cena -after- their work with Triple H, and Punk currently is the #2 guy and has been for the better part of 2 years now.
And the only reason why Orton isn't higher status now has nothing to do with Triple H and everything to do with his own problems that he's been causing for himself.
To me, this is just another perfect example of "getting the pin doesn't make the guy, the guy makes the guy". Triple H didn't do the job for any of these guys, and yet, they have all gone on to great success in the company since working with Triple H.
Now I do agree on one thing - if I was in charge of booking, CM Punk would have continued / restarted his feud against Triple H going into WrestleMania that year, and CM Punk would have gone over on Triple H that year at WrestleMania, but on the whole, I just can't hold the same grudge towards Triple H that everyone else does.
