I was one of the people strictly against casting a non-white actor for Peter, because like MJ, Peter Parker has an iconic look too but even moreso. And i'm going to honest, i'll be a little disappointed if MJ turns out to be non-white.. I mean, her look and design is iconic and it just seem unnecessary to change her. But it's not in my hands. If Zendaya beat out other white actresses, then i'm willing to give her a chance.

It doesn't always go that way. Rashida Jones is black and white, but if she were cast as Misty Knight, I'm pretty sure there'd be objections.

At any rate, I'm not concerned with the technicality of it. If there was a girl who was only white but didn't look right as a redhead, I'd be against her being cast in the role, too.

True, but that's what they've been doing with Storm, and they've continuously ignored the outrage...

if characterization is more important, then Peter can be black, Asian, or Latino, Storm could be white or Asian or Latina, Captain America could be black, Asian, or Latina etc.

They could change the race but keep the characterizations of those characters intact. You could technically change the race of any character but keep the characterization the same, doesn't mean that would be the right decision.

With Peter Parker you'd be racebending, but that was generally what people on tumblr and twitter wanted if they couldn't have Miles, the personality of Peter would be intact, but his fans would be disgruntled.

With Storm, her parents are African-American and African, you can't go around that, her mom is a part of an African tribe, if she was white her culture and heritage would erased, her significance as an iconic black superhero would erased.

I know people then use the blue eyes and white hair as an excuse and to derail, but the continent of Africa is the most genetically diverse continent in the entire world. There are tribes of people with blue eyes and/or blonde hair. The white hair on Storm could easily be a birth mark or mutation.

Adding in Black Panther, Black Panther is African, and he's a part of a nation that hid itself, and isolated itself from the world. How can he be any other race than African.

Captain America is black, Sam Wilson is Captain America, b/c Captain America is a title and not Steve Rogers, and no you couldn't change Steve Rogers race, b/c his race and the time period he was from play a factor in him becoming Captain America.

So no you really can't change the race of every character.

Would her being Vultress explain the chemistry test she did with Tom and not Keaton...

Also how can she be a main villain if her role will expand later, that would imply her role is small in this movie.

But I have no problem with Zendaya being Vultress.

I think that, IF Zendaya ends up playing MJ (a big if at this point), then it likely came down to her nailing her audition and/or chemistry with the other actors. Because I serious doubt that Marvel went in fixated on the idea that "we have to cast a Black/biracial actress to play this part." They likely were just willing to audition a wide variety of actresses, and she happened to be the best choice in this case in their minds.

Didn't they audition another black chick from The Hunger Games? Maybe Laura took that role, but the rumor was that part went to Zendaya, who "nailed" the screen tests.

Honestly, maybe this will just be a high school crush. She'll probably be the most popular girl in the high school and Homecoming Queen if it comes to that.

The rumor was Peter will be lost and will have to make his way back to the dance. Maybe Liz gets dumped by her date and Parker takes his friend to the dance.

Or maybe Zendaya's character decides to ditch the dance because she's tired of being popular or some feminist crap, and Parker/Spiderman finds her and convinces her to go back.

The point is, there is nothing to indicate that she's playing MJ, besides the bombshell looks.

Stemming from the basic stereotypes of a hot supermodel chick, yes. Quite easy to extrapolate that.

Obviously Marvel will attempt to be slightly more intelligent and avoid such a contrived plot, without hopefully overthinking it.

What is today's Homecoming Queen like these days? Is she completely superficial and vain, or she more like a Valedictorian and star athlete and geek all in one? Is she dating the obtuse jock, or the smartest kid in the class who's also going to Ivy League (and happens to be good looking as well)?

Marvel will want to overcome stereotypes and write characters in a more progressive manner that kids will relate to. I don't know what that entails exactly. Paper Towns comes to mind.

Everything is a popularity contest, so as long as that character is popular i.e liked by the whole school, they could be all the things you suggested or none at all. Marvel really doesn't have to try that hard to go against the grain for this.

This is going to sounds like and odd comparison, I was watching Scream 4 the other night, and Hayden Panettiere's character is how I could imagine Marvel doing the "popular girl/homecoming queen" type of character. Basically, she's super-attractive, popular, and knows/is not afraid to flaunt it sometimes.

BUT, she's also a (not so closeted) geek who enjoys going to "genre things," in Hayden's case public showings of horror films, and is not nearly as shallow/superficial as she first appears.
