Exactly. Them making original characters for Spidey's supporting cast is completely pointless and in my opinion, in bad taste.

Was it also pointless and in bad taste for Christopher Nolan, David Goyer, and Co. to create an original character in Rachel Dawes for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight?

It's a bit sad, to be honest, that people are suddenly acting like creating original characters is some kind of "cardinal sin".

Haha, yeah, because Rachel wasn't a good character and hardly anybody liked her in Begins and she was even worse in TDK.

In Spidey's case it absolutely is a sin, anybody who knows the comics knows that he has the best supporting cast in the genre full of rich and interesting and diverse personalites. Creating new characters is unnecessary.

not MJ, as in not Mary Jane Watson, a different character which has already been established. Michelle being nicknamed MJ bc of her nickname is very much a possibility

I wouldn't be surprised if we do see the real MJ in the film , but no , Michelle isn't Mary Jane Watson.

I think this first film is focusing on the characters in Peter's cast who either have gotten shorter shift, like Flash, or haven't been exploited yet, i.e. Ned, Liz, in addition to new characters like Michelle.

I have a feeling that this Michelle character is meant to be a stand-in for Gwen Stacy. Like an original character meant to play the role of Gwen. She's a bookworm who likes Peter. There will be a love triangle that involves her and Liz. There's a good chance she'll have a geek to glam makeover like Allison in The Breakfast Club. What we know about the character seems very reminiscent of Spec Gwen. Using a different character would avoid comparisons to TASM and would add an element of surprise if they were to readapt TNGSD in the future.

It would be funny if Michelle had a last name that started with J, and Peter dismisses her the entire time, all while Aunt May wants to hook Peter up with her friend's niece MJ, who Peter thinks is referring to Michelle. And then in the end of the movie, Mary Jane finally comes over and delivers the iconic jackpot line.

If they were to attempt to adapt TNGD without Gwen Stacy, the story would be butchered for me. Seriously, Michelle is not replacing MJ and she'e not replacing Gwen, she's a completely new OC with likely nothing to do with either of them. If Marvel wanted MJ/Gwen, they would've cast those characters not create knock-off versions of them

Maybe "Mary Jane" will be a fictitious alias of Michelle's: a complete facade and role she's playing to impress Peter. Maybe it's also her nickname because she smokes marijuana, and her initials are MJ, with her surname being something beginning with J. Maybe she even gets suspended for smoking Mary Jane and ends up in detention.

Then in a Marvel One-Shot released on the Spider-Man: Homecoming Blu Ray, we'll find out that there is a real Mary Jane Watson out there.

It really doesn't. If she really is an original character, I hope she at least isn't a love interest because why would they waste any time introducing and making us care about a made-up one, when they could instead channel that effort into MJ or Gwen.

In any case, I guess it's better to withhold judgment until we learn more about her role.

TNGSD was already "butchered" due to taking place in a clocktower, Harry instead of Norman, Gwen already knowing Peter's identity, Gwen willingly wanting to help which lead to her death, etc.

We need a Marvel One Shot showing Spidey's Origin and him taking down his first criminal in the prototype suit. Mostly want it so we can see the prototype suit clearer.

Unnecessary maybe, but we got just 1 original character and all the others are from the comics. So, you're overreacting a little. Who knows, maybe she is a great character. Maybe they were inspired to write this character because it fits the story they are telling better than any of the pre-existing comicbook characters could've. Also, something tells me that if they named her exact character Gwen Stacy instead, you'd have no problem with that
