No Way Home "There's No Place Like Home" - Andrew Garfield Returns As Webbverse Spider-Man

It can even be a good way to help differentiate the different Spider-Men films being released in the public eye (IF we were to get sequels to either of Tobey or Andrew's Spideys); Tobey's Peter is likely married to Dunst's Mary Jane and maybe even has a kid or two at this point, Andrew hasn't been able to properly move on yet from Gwen and can maybe find a new relationship with someone like Felicia and Tom's Peter will likely find his way back to Zendaya's MJ in the next MCU Spidey trilogy.

Justice for Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane!

Imagine bringing her back and finally doing Webb's universe justice. That would be such a far out there thread that's not resolved.

People would be like

"WOW. They actually made Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane canon."

Garfield loves the character and it shows.

Not only that but it's obvious Garfield GETS both sides of the character. Holland loves Spidey too, knows how to play him as a likeable fellow and he's great. But paying attention to Andrew's performance especially in NWH, he's got the little details down, right to the little idiosyncrasies. It's like the comic and cartoons come to life. The least faithful part of his performance is his hair and that's about it in NWH.

I still love Holland and I'm totally fine with the franchise continuing to just be his, but Andrew was a hoot to watch.

Absolutely loved Garfield in this. As someone who didn't care for the Amazing Spider-Man films, I left this movie with an insatiable appetite for more of his Spider-Man. Consider me a convert.

"It's not the first time I've been stabbed."
"Oh. Good, good..."

"I just kinda wish you were black."
"Oh, I am so sorry, man."

I'm pretty much in the same group as many others who didn't care too much about Andrew being back as long as we got Tobey. Well I was wrong, Andrew was my favorite Spiderman in this movie. I loved his interaction with the other Peter's and Electro. And he hit the emotional side even better than Tom did.

Man now I feel kind of bummed knowing that this might be it. Tobey's Spidey sounds like he's in a good spot and we'll get more of Tom's Spidey. It was a good sendoff but I wish we could have a more conclusive finale to Andrew's Spidey.

I loved Garfield but one nitpick I have is I kind of wondered what happened with his Harry Osborn.

In the film, he says after Gwen’s death he stopped pulling his punches - implying he became more hardened. I do wonder if he ever had another confrontation with Harry Osborn again and did he beat the crap out of him? Did he ever face off with his Sinister Six? Did he have his own Otto Octavius?

Haha. I bet there are a bunch of fans who will be saying the same as your first paragraph.

Yeah I was surprised that his reveal got louder cheers than Tobey. I always thought people overhated him lol

As someone who didn't like the 'Amazing' films, I thought Garfield crushed it here. It oddly worked in this story's favour to have a Spider-Man from a failed timeline, as it could pay off some things and be more cathartic for it.

I was never under the impression that Garfield was hated in the role. His Spider-Man movies may have been, especially TASM2, but if he had been given better material to work with, he could have been the clear frontrunner as the best Spider-Man on film. I wasn't expecting the overwhelming amount of cheering when he showed up compared to Tobey but I also have to take into consideration that a lot of the kids who grew up watching Andrew's movies are now at the very least in college.

I don't think they'd do it but hell yes, if Sony and Marvel partnered to do just a final TASM film I would be there opening night. I mean there's a lot of precedent to do it if the stars unlikely aligned. [...]

Again not gonna happen but I can't help but dream of a solo Andrew Garfield Spidey film under the eye of Kevin Feige.

The stars did align for NWH. Tom Rothman would be a FOOL not to consider that option now. And it gives Garfield leverage to say "well sure, I'd love to play Spider-Man again but I want Kevin Feige involved."

Anything is possible now.

AG's appearance here definitely melted my icy heart in regard to my feelings towards his Spider-man. He's one of the family as far as I'm concerned.

It's kind of sad to think about, though...if Disney and Sony had just worked things out sooner we could have had Andrew as the main MCU Spidey in a Marvel-written Spider-man movie way back at the start of phase 2. Marvel would have probably been less reluctant to use traditional Spider-man elements at that point and we'd have probably gotten movies that would've made better use of Andrew's potential that we finally saw shine in NWH.

Granted I still really enjoyed the way things ended up playing out, but it's hard not to consider what might've been.

I'm surprised no one is talking about the fact that Andrew not only namedrops Uncle Ben, but apparently keeps his words (amusingly just going along with the "Great Power" as an abridged version of his Uncle Ben's actual responsibility line) to heart. His version has always been given flak for the de-emphasis on Uncle Ben's importance to his life, and I thought it was appreciated that he never forgot his Ben after all this time.

Dude, people love Andrew. If you go to websites outside of here and so on, Andrew wins out on a lot of fan generated polls for favorite Spider-man. People have always loved the guy. It’s impossible not to. I think sometimes, insecure Tobey fans just speak louder in an attempt to drown out the appreciation for the guy., lol.

Andrews following is huge. He doesn’t have the nostalgia shield that Tobey has or the “newest toy on the block” appeal that Tom has. He’s the middle child and in the roughest position…and even through that it’s absolutely impossible to ignore just how flat out amazing he is in the role.

Just As a disclaimer, I love both Tom and Tobey. They just aren’t Andrew. Also I can’t say this enough but the fact that Andrew openly gushes about his love for this character matters. At least for me it does anyway. It connects you more to his performance in my eyes. His appreciation for the character shines and just resonates in a level that it doesn’t with Tobey.

I do think the nostalgic shield for Tobey is what has convinced people that many might not be fond of Andrew. From my experience, people like to gush over nostalgia. People are also quite competitive with Nostalgia. They take threats to their nostalgia personally. They want to know their nostalgia is still the top dog. And I think with Andrew, Its there to a much lesser extent. no one really feels that need constantly gush over him. But that doesn't mean people can't appareciate or attach to Andrew as Spider-man. And i was pleasantly surprised by the reaction he got when he ripped his mask off. Its rare my theater experiences involve the audience reacting in such a way.

So i feel good about it. And I'm sure Andrew is delighted too. I hope he got to experience that reaction with others.

I feel like Holland has a different type of shield. he has the MCU shield. so he feels a little distanced from Toby and Andrew. People don't judge holland quite as hard.

Nothing to add.

You hit it on the nail.

I was one of those people in 2012. I was VERY resistant on the prospect of a reboot and a new actor playing the role. And though I actually never thought Tobey's performance 100% embodied the character from the comics, I respected what he brought and did for the character on a mainstream scale. Plus the optics of the production of TASM and cancelling of SM4 really made me sour to begin with. So of course when we're first introduced to Garfield's Peter, with lame indie rock playing over the scene, the Twilight-like high school aesthetic, poofy hair and that damn skateboard, I was geared up to hate his portrayal.

Then the dude went to work. And I began witnessing a kid who KNEW how to portray Spider-Man despite all the departures the script went with the character to seperate it from the Raimi films. For me, it was unmistakable he himself knew how the character should be like. Once he put on the suit, he made me realize the Spidey quipping can work on the live action medium. And his performance got even better in ASM2 because at least the script began conforming to the fun nature of the character, despite the movie being a big big mess.

I always understood why people especially in the general audience didn't take to Andrew, because there was so much noise around everything else. I'm glad he got his shot again in NWH, which he honestly could've just phoned in and it would've satisfied us Garfield fans simply because he appeared. Instead he put in a great committed effort and now you have even the general audience and Garfield haters reconsidering their position on him, winning them over the way he won me over in 2012 under worse circumstances.

Was awesome to see him back!!

The majority of people I know all think he's the best Spider-Man even though they prefer the Raimi films. It seems to be a more accepting opinion now.

I really hope he shows up in future films and they introduce MJ. I can't see why Sony wouldn't at this point. Audiences and fans love him in the role and now any new Spidey or Venom film is gonna make a ton of box office after this.
