Morbius is as valid as any of them as far as I am concerned. He is a living vampire thus explained by science not magic. Doc Ock's awakening scene is a prime example of doing horror without being gratuitously gory. Right up Raimis alley really.
Not at all. Ock's hospital scene was bloodless. It was mostly screaming, and POV tentacle shots. The two best bits of violence were the fingernails on the floor, and that one surgeon being impaled onto the wall. But again, we didn't see any blood or anything gory. Some of the shots even cut away before we saw anything. Like those three tentacles going for the doctor with the chainsaw. It then cut to a shot of his hand holding the chainsaw falling to the floor.
Don't get me wrong, it was a great scene. Very suspensful, and brutal in a couple of parts. But nothing on the level of a vampire attacking and feeding on people's blood.
Any other time a villain killed someone, it was over the top and even comical [Goblin vapourizing people to instant skeletons, for example]. You think you'd get a vampire attacking people and sucking on their blood all thru the movie?
Even the character of a vampire itself is pretty scary. Not just in the image but also in personality. I still remember the soccor moms complaining about Danny DeVito's Penguin back in the day, and the worst he did was bite some guy's nose.
The point is its Raimis call. I dont think he is "sniffing glue" as you put it. I dont think he is making a mistake either. Sure theres more deserving and interesting characters, but this is a character Raimi wants to use so at least hes gonna try and at this very moment deserves some benefit of the doubt considering his vision is returning to stories and/or character Raimi wants to do or cares about rather than trying to appease fans.
Well, of course it's Raimi's call. And we have every right to say we disagree with him and think he's making a horrible choice with the choice of villain. That's the point.
We don't have to try and appease him, or praise his choices just because he's the director. And as a supposed Spidey fan, Raimi should have a greater appreciation for the more infamous classic villains who have far more to offer a Spidey movie than Morbius.
The years of great comic book material is right there with these guys. Use it for goodness sake.
