Tilda Swinton Cast as The Ancient One

Isn't The Ancient One supposed to be Asian? Chinese, right?

So, dear Lord, I really hope they don't whitewash him :(

ETA: I guess he was born in Tibet, according to Marvel wikia.

Watch it be a wildcard choice like Jackie Chan or Jet Li.

Wildcard? If it were either of them i'd need them in unrecognizable make up. Especially Chan.

can we all at least agree that there is no need to cast a martial artist for the role and that there are great asian dramatic actors out there?

You know, I actually would dig Jackie Chan as the Ancient One. He's, what, in his 60s now? You wouldn't have to age him THAT much more to get him to "ancient" status. He has the martial arts skills to be convincing in that regard. And I think he's shown in stuff like the Karate Kid that he can be a good actor, even in English language.

Actually george takei has already played the ancient one in ultimate spiderman.

Actually he may not have been the ancient one but it was strongly hinted that he was

Oh goodness, keep Bill Nighy away from this

Yep. Was PO'd that Nighy's been approached.

Watanabe… or maybe there's another actor that'll pop up. Not liking that there's only ONE ASIAN DUDE being asked to play an Asian character.

Isn't it a bit cliché to have all old martial arts masters be Asian?

Maybe the Ancient One isn't Asian in the MCU? Perhaps the MCU version is Haitian/African (if it's Morgan Freeman) or (if it's Nighy) someone who's a descendant of Merlin.

Besides, it gets a bit tiring to have all martial arts masters be Asian. Do they all have to be Asian?

Well, I don't actually know if I'd have a problem with Freeman in the role… But while it might be cliché and boring to have a Martial Arts expert be Asian, Marvel's done a pretty damn decent job with casting the major/main supporting characters in their movies true to their canonical race. Nighy being cast would be majorly problematic in that case (and indicative to the problem in Hollywood that casting skews heavily white and male).

And what's the argument for changing the race of The Ancient One? We have a lack of representation in the Marvel movies on the Asian end (Bautista is the only one with a major role, and yes, I know that AoS is led by an Asian-American and Asian actresses), so I'd just really, really prefer they keep TAO's race intact from the comics, even if it'd be considered stereotypical.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Watanabe. Praying another Asian actor shows up.

They skipped it with Ironman now possibly again in DS. What about Iron Fist?

In regards to Ho Yinsen in Iron Man, he's Afghan, which is a mix of multiple ethnic groups, besides one of his parents could have been of Central Asian extraction.

I mean isn't he Asian in the comics? That would make sense considering the character.
I'm obviously not going to throw a fit if they don't cast an Asian but that's what I've always envisioned since that's what he is in the books. I certainly never thought it'd be Morgan Freeman and I really hope they don't take that route.
But as MakeMineMarvel noted, they nail the casting more times than not so eh whoever they get will be good I'm sure.

But I don't really think I'd have any issues with Morgan Freeman as TAO.

Since I watch Agents of SHIELD every week, I am fine with Melinda May and Skye/Daisy Johnson as my Asian American representation in the MCU.

I'm super greedy and want more :word:

The main reason I'm excited for DOCTOR STRANGE was the chance that they'd possibly cast a strong Asian supporting cast for him. But… now I'm not sure LOL!

We'll get an Asian for Wong.
