They did the same thing with Chocolate Factory. Wonka is supposed to be the supporting anti-thesis to Charlie's protagonist, but they gave him a full-on plotline because it was Depp. I love the dude, but he will always overshadow in his flicks, that's just how it is.
That's what I loved about the Gene Wilder version. You don't see him until like 40 minutes into the movie so you got this HUGE buildup to the moment of his introduction.
