For the same reason Jor-El could be played by a fattie in 1978 instead of a lean, Aussie in 2011. Because it was the 70s.

A "fattie" could play Jor-El now and I doubt it would make a difference to anyone but nit picking fanboys who think nobody in the 70s had taste.
