Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott team up for BBC historical thriller miniseries Taboo

Reviews haven't been great for the show but only the first 3 episodes were shared with critics - which could mean the 4th episode was terrible.

It has a 67 on Metacritic. It is only 8 episodes so not that much of an investment. Taboo was definitely my most anticipated new show of 2017, hopefully I'm able to enjoy it.

Man, incest used to be a very, well, taboo thing in tv/movies, now it's everywhere - after last night's episode of Delicious now it's here, not to mention GOT.

On the whole, this was a very slow start, but I'm intrigued. Though, James's mother must have been a very light skinned-black woman or not black at all for him being a son of slave and a slaver.

Yea I don't think I buy Hardy being anything other than white.

This show oozes atmosphere.

I didn't like it. It was trying too hard to be edgy, none of the potential plots interested me, and I can't say I liked a single character, except maybe the sister. Since the reviews don't suggest it will improve much I probably won't watch any more episodes from here on out.

Good lord is Tom Hardy ever hot though.

My only complaint is in having difficulty catching everything that was said. Might be the accents I don't know. I'll need to watch it again to try and catch what I missed the first time.

definitely the accents... us Southern peaches need help with the British accents :o

I did still enjoy it though. Hardy was sufficiently creepy in his role. :)

I found Hardy to be more comprehensible in this than Peaky Blinders where he needed subtitles :funny:

Hardy speaks perfectly clear in this.

I have to say I didn't enjoy it either though. Nothing grabbed my attention.

I'd watch this dude read a phonebook for 10h so I'm very interested :funny:

I'm not in love with it, but I think it's off to a decent start, and I'm intrigued to see where it's going. And yeah, I had no trouble understanding Hardy (or any of the accents) in this. Peaky Blinders is another story, though, lol.

The production is great, but the story hasn't gripped me yet. I'll give it a few more episodes.

I enjoyed the pilot, it didn't hook me like the pilots of The People vs OJ Simpson, True Detective or Fargo but it didn't bore me. Love the atmosphere and will be tuning in to see what Hardy's character does next.

Also news came out this week that despite the limited series label Steven Knight and Hardy have plans for two more seasons.

Set in 1814, the historical drama stars Tom Hardy as James Keziah Delaney, an adventurer who returns to England after spending years in Africa. The cast also includes Oona Chaplin, David Hayman, Jonathan Price, Michael Kelly, Jessie Buckley, Jefferson Hall, and Scroobius Pip. The show premiered its first season on January 10th.

In the interview, Knight revealed he has plans to move the show to North America in future seasons:

Not certainly in this first eight hours, but we have plans — well, certainly I have plans — if we get given the green light for more. The plan is that there would be three seasons, and, as with Peaky Blinders, I have had a destination in mind from the beginning, because I think it helps as a writer. The destination in mind is that James Keziah Delaney sets foot on Nootka Sound. But that’s a long way off.”

Though neither FX nor BBC One have renewed the series yet, Knight says he and Hardy are ready for more seasons:

I think when we first set out on this we’d go well, eight hours we can tell the story, you know, the story — beginning, middle, and end. But I know Tom has loved it so much really, has been so involved as a producer and as an actor. I’ve enjoyed it so much that we would both be ready and willing to do Series 2 and Series 3 and see where it goes.”

The Pilot took a bit for be to enjoy outside of the scenery and costumes.

But, the second episode is a delight. The world is fleshed out more with great actors like Gatiss and Stephen Graham.. even that one guy from House Of Cards shows up. Plus, we get more out of Hardy then a stern brute.

A bit weird but interesting, noticed tonight is 1 hour and 20 some minutes

Second episode was good. Even had Scroobius Pip in it! :funny:

That fat suit on the king looks awful.:funny:

Well excuse us... we don't spend 90% of our life looking at Tom Hardy videos on youtube. :sly:

Yes... I did hack your search history...

I'm glad this comes out ... by other means... on Saturdays. Adds to the glory that are 'weekends'

FYI, Delaney's mother was purchased by his father from a Native American/indigenous tribe to which she belongs.

This echoes my own sentiments for the most part.

And yeah, I had no trouble understanding Hardy (or any of the accents) in this.

The only character I'm forced to listen a little extra closely to is Atticus.

While watching 'The Young Pope', you can marvel and gasp at the beautiful scenery, on the other hand while watching 'Taboo' you're being disgusted, assaulted with visual sh(!)ts being shovelled at you. lolol
