lively is an oscar contender next to meester and swift lol
From what I've seen of GG (which, granted, isn't a whole lot, but more than I'd care to admit), Meester acts circles around Lively. She just must have a worse agent/publicity team than her. In fact, my impression is that Leighton Meester seems to be the only person on that show who can act.

disagree i think lively gets unwarranted hate because she came from gossip girl

i really liked her in the town

and even the terrible GL she was fine i thought

she now gets to work with Oliver stone and Steven Soderberh in her next 2 films

which should get her even more experience which can only help her

Well I'm comparing her to someone else on Gossip Girl, so that's obviously not where my opinion's coming from. I'm just saying I've seen enough of Gossip Girl to know that she actually sucks on the show, while her co-star doesn't.

I thought the praise for her in The Town was waaay overblown, but she was certainly better there than she's been in anything else. But she was her usual awful self in GL, imo.

I agree. Girl is lucky and smart. She has an amazing team working for her and it helps too that she's dating some A-List celebs. She's average at best IMO. I always burst out laughing whenever I watch her "I wanna go with you" scene in The Town. All the hype for that?

Anyway, back on topic... Should we take it as a good or bad sign that they haven't announced who Eponine will be?

Lively is awful.

Also, glad Tveit is confirmed. Yum.

I'm so not liking the majority of the cast for this movie :csad:

The only one that I dislike strongly is Swift, which is supposedly offered the role of Eponine but I haven't heard whether she accepts the part or not. And her name hasn't been attached to any official news release like Hugh Jackman, Anna Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried have.

Jackman, Tveit, and Redmane are the only choices I absolutely love(partially because I wanted Tveit in the role :cwink:)
I'm alright with Seyfried and Cohen, even if I hate the latter.
The rest are just so wrong. :csad:

The only person who is truly wrong in my honest opinion is Swift.. IF she is cast.

I feel like Jackman and Crowe are perfect... for the opposite roles though. But, I think they'll be fine.

HBC was, and would always have been the obvious choice for MT. I called that when Hooper was first announced.

Seyfried isn't the best singer in the world, and she'd probably be my least favorite if it weren't for Swift. Suddenly Seyfried sounds perfect.

Hathaway has the acting and vocal talent for Fantine, so I think that's also perfect. SBC was unexpected, but I'm willing to give him a shot.

Redmayne probably has the best voice of the entire cast, next to Tveit.

You don't like Russell Crowe as Inspector Javier? I think looks-wise he is absolutely perfect, but I haven't heard him sing so that may be the only negative thing about it.

I still don't *get* why so many people think Hugh is better for Javert. Besides being a movie star, Hugh is also a Tony-winning Broadway star and is perfect for JVJ and singing all those iconic songs. If you heard him sing "Soliloquy" at his Broadway show, I can only imagine what he will do with "Who Am I?", "Bring Him Home", and "One Day More" to name a few. And just watch/listen to him act and sing those songs from "Oklahoma!" too.

I am one of them. It's not meant to disrespect Hugh, but his sharp and bold tone of voice seems more fitting for Javert. Not that I'm complaining either way though.

Yeah, I agree. And I'm not complaining. I think Hugh will make a great JVJ, but his voice is more suited for Javert. He also just has that tall, lean and fit stature that I would associate with Javert, while Crowe appears more like someone who has been in prison for years.

I disagree - I think I've heard almost everything Hugh has sung, and I can totally see him singing those iconic JVJ songs. And as to the look, he can totally look like he's been in prison (see the conquistador look in "The Fountain") or play an aristocratic mayor (see "Kate & Leopold"). He will age in this film so it should be so interesting to see how the looks change.

Very interesting on what Russell has been doing! Wonder if the last little hint is Swift..

You may recall that, in last week’s Mosh Pit, I discussed the casting of the upcoming film version of “Les Miserables.” Well, there’s one part of the story that I left out. One Chicagoan has a very special role in this film. It’s a story that some of you already know, but that to my knowledge hasn’t been told to the world at large--before now. Jeff Award-winning Chicago musical director and vocal coach Roberta Duchak is coaching Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe on his songs for the film, and has been doing so since last summer!

I had the pleasure of speaking to Roberta by phone this past Monday. She couldn’t meet with me at Columbia College Chicago, where she teaches, or at the DruryLaneTheatre in Oakbrook Terrace, where she frequently musical directs (“Ragtime” and “Sweeney Todd” are just two of her extensive number of credits there). Why isn’t she in Chicago, you ask? Because she is New Orleans for a few weeks, teaching “Stars” to a star. Ever since last summer, when Crowe was living in Naperville, working on a certain superhero film in the Plano area, she has been paid by the “Les Miz” film itself, not Crowe, to get him in tip-top shape to play and sing the role of Inspector Javert in the highly anticipated film. She was with him for his audition for the role in New York (also in the room were stage producer Cameron Mackintosh and composer Claude-Michel Schonberg), and she has spent time with him in Los Angeles, Vancouver and (for three weeks in December) in Australia. She told me that he loves to sing (he comes from a rock background), he has improved and seen his hard work pay off, and that “Old Man River” from “Show Boat” is his favorite warm-up song! Sometimes they work every day. Sometimes they don’t. He loves it. So does she. And you just never know what life will bring, do you?

She confirmed reports I’ve read that the cast will have a six-week rehearsal period, commencing in mid-February, and that shooting will last until July, with mid-December as the targeted release date. It is true that the cast will be singing live while the cameras roll. But she told me that one aspect of the film that has been widely reported very recently is in fact not true! Stay tuned to your favorite media outlets for future developments.

Seriously. And in the meantime, let’s all wish Russell and Roberta the best, and get just a wee bit jealous. But why shouldn’t she be doing this? I’m sure that the whole cast will have vocal coaches. Why not one of the best, our own Roberta Duchak? What an opportunity. Congratulations!

I agree that Hugh would vocally make a better Javert. Not sure about Crowe...have we ever heard him sing? Jackman has an excellent voice though and no doubt will be up to the job.
I read recently ( http://www.cheaptheatretickets.com/les-miserables-movie-cast-revealed/)
that it WONT be in 3D as previously thought, and that the cast will be forced to sing live on the set and won't have prerecorded vocals unlinke other movie musicals...an extra challenge for all involved I guess!

crow has sang before at award shows and whatnot. but i dont think anything like les mis. you could probably reverse the roles for crowe and jackman and it will still be good. But jackmans star power and training is probably the main reason why he was picked as the main star.

Eddie was interviewed at the Critics Circle Awards - he talks about singing live, interesting how the audition went!

I can't let you go without talking about the Les Miserables movie - I saw the interview you gave the other week where you talked about singing live on set. Is that scary?

It is a bit scary, but we did that through the auditions and in the screentest - singing live with the earpiece, so it helps us retain the spontaneity. I think it'll be interesting.

How well did you know the musical before you got the part of Marius?

I knew it well! Our parents took us to see it when we were kids. When we went on holiday we'd always have to drive for hours, so they'd put the soundtrack on and one of us would be Jean Valjean and one of us would be Javert. My family were just as excited about me getting the part in the movie as I was!

Stars of original Les Miserables get an encore as they join the cast of new big screen remake

By Baz Bamigboye
Last updated at 11:20 PM on 26th January 2012

The original stars of the stage version of musical Les Miserables will join Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in the big-screen version, which begins rehearsals on Monday.

Colm Wilkinson, who was the first Jean Valjean, and Frances Ruffelle, who created the part of Eponine, have been given feature roles in the movie.

Wilkinson will play the Bishop of Digne. ‘He shows Valjean the road ahead, after Valjean has robbed him of silver candlesticks,’ says Cameron Mackintosh, who produced the musical on stage and who is also involved with Working Title and Universal in making the picture, which Oscar-winner Tom Hooper will direct.

‘“I have bought your soul for God!” the bishop says to Valjean — and it’s a beautiful moment,’ Cameron told me.

Wilkinson, who played Valjean in London and on Broadway, said that as he takes on the role of the bishop, his journey with Les Miserables has ended ‘and I have come full circle’.

Cameron also revealed that Ruffelle will play ‘the most fabulous ****e’ in the movie, and while she won’t have a song of her own, she will be part of the group of prostitutes who sing the number Lovely Ladies.

Some 27 years after Les Miserables was first staged at the Barbican, the show is still running — now at the Queens in the West End.

Cameron noted that Alan Parker was going to direct a movie of it 23 years ago but, for various reasons, it didn’t work out.

‘The gods have made the timing right, in that we now have the perfect Jean Valjean in Hugh, and the whole feeling about musicals has changed,’ he told me.

Hooper has already spent three weeks working with Jackman on his characterisation.

The director will be in Los Angeles for this weekend’s Director’s Guild awards before heading back to London to take charge of rehearsals at Pinewood studios next week, where he will work with his cast for seven weeks.

Russell Crowe, playing Inspector Javert, will also be arriving next week, along with Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Eddie Redmayne (Marius), Amanda Seyfried (Cosette) and Aaron Tveit (Enjolras).

Other key roles are still in negotiation.

The stage show had 28 actors playing a variety of roles, but the film, Cameron told me, will have scores of parts for West End performers.
‘It’s the same as when the musical Oliver! was being made and dozens — probably hundreds — of people from London stage shows took part,’ Cameron said.

Filming of the script by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg will be done at Pinewood, with some scenes shot on location in the UK. There’s also talk of some filming being done in France.

Nice to see the original cast members making guest appearances in the movie.

glad to see colm getting that role.

I hope there's a role in it for Colm Wilkinson, just for old time's sake. He would be good as the Bishop at the beginning who gives Jean Valjean the silverware and candlesticks.

Okay, did I, or did I not, totally call this?

Who's da man?!

WHAT?!?

I said, who's da man?!?!

WHAT?!?
