Homecoming Tom Rothman Becomes New Sony Honcho

wasn't Kaz Hirai the leader of the Uruk army at the battle of Helms Deep?

I read the Variety article about Rothman's appointment. He had a secret meeting with Kaz Hirai, but the final appointment was made by Michael Lynton.

I guess he did have to swear "I won't interfere with our Marvel deal on Spider-Man", because I doubt Hirai wouldn't have met with him if Rothman wouldn't be a team player.

Lol probably hahah. If he doesn't, Hirai and Lynton, his higher ups who want the deal to work out, can easily override him. We're ok here.

Legend has it, that his less hands-on approach was forced on him by a higher power after an online article that questioned the quality of Fox movies

Seems like the same thing at Sony -- he answers to Michael Lynton and Kaz Hirai rather than Jim Gianopulos.

I'm pretty sure Marvel, Disney, and Sony were aware that there was a chance that Rothman would get the gig when thrashing out the Spider-Man deal. It's not like Rothman was a sudden unlisted candidate for the CEO position, and one I'm sure Kevin Feige was well aware of.

my spider-sense is tingling... danger... in a bad way... hope Spidey isn't f**ked...

*Reads up on Rothman....

"Rothman ran Fox back when the likes of Daredevil, Elektra and the previous Fantastic Four movies were released. He fast-tracked X-Men: The Last Stand, forcing Bryan Singer to abandon the project, and then placed Brett Ratner at the helm. Word is he also micromanaged X-Men: Origins: Wolverine into such a mess that the film wasn't even recognizable to its director, Gavin Hood. Some say Rothman dislikes comic book movies in general, only having a hand in producing the ones he did because of how lucrative they are, and is allegedly one of the main reasons there is such bad blood between Fox and Marvel Studios these days.

Not waiting for Bryan Singer to finish working on "Superman Returns", and not having a replacement director until I believe weeks before filming was due to start.

Not waiting for several actors (e.g. James Marsden, Rebecca Romjin, and Anna Paquin) to take care of prior engagements before filming. In the process, certain characters were "killed off" as a matter of convenience.

Didn't want Sentinels (the gigantic, mutant hunting robots) appearing in an X-Men film because he believed that audiences would immediately think that giant robots appearing in live-action would be too "silly". This was of course, before "Transformers" (a movie for which Tom Rothman turned down) came out.

*Having "Daredevil" edited to make it appear more like a summer blockbuster (i.e. more CGI) in the mode of "Spider-Man". "Daredevil" was initially conceived as a more violent, R-rated film based on Frank Miller's run with the comics.

*Not giving the "Fantastic Four" films a better budget and also thought that it would be better for us to see Galactus as a cloud."

this is what's called the Peter Parker 'luck'...

Rothman has to answer to Michael Lynton so I don't think people should be so quick to panic.

Sounds like Rothman has some track record...

And Lynton is very eager to work with marvel and Feige. Guys, we are ok here. Rothman is not the top of the Totem, he answers to Lynton (who is eager to work with feige) who answers to Hirai (who wants this deal to work out)

Unless Rothman replaces Lynton in the future, this isn't a HUGE deal. What matters most is that Lynton and Hirai want the deal to happen and will protect it by whatever means.

Even if Rothman didn't have to answer to Lynton I don't think it would be that huge, because Feige at the very least could work out a deal with Rothman so they're both satisfied. (Feige is a genius, I'd trust him). But Rothman answers to Lynton so we don't have to worry

Rothman answers to Lynton and Lyton answers to Hirai. Did I get that right? This should be the name of a new thread to get everyone to CHILL.

That is correct. Lynton and Hirai are both eager to work with marvel, and Rothman's decision go through Lynton and ultimately Hirai

Sony Pictures really is making it pretty easy for them to become my most hated movie studio. I think Spider-Man is in big danger with Rothman.

I'm really not going to worry about this as a fan. Letting this ruin the joy I felt on the night of the 9th? Hell no.

Hopefully he's just filling a vacant seat. I wish it didn't have to be him in particular, but there is no way he'll affect what hopefully has already been established in contracts between Sony and Marvel for the near future.

nobody should worry about anything we know so little about MCU spidey. All these rumors and rothman are gonna give someone a heart attack lol

And who does Lynton work for? How do we know or not that Rothman won't jump over him to kiss the bigger bosses asses to push out Lynton. This is horrible news, why would Sony even consider the dirtbag?

Lynton is head of all of Sony Pictures. He works under the japan execs, (kaz Hirai), Kaz Hirai wants the deal to go through. The Japanese execs forced renegotiations

But why this jerk out of all of the other people they could have hired? And why now, at this time? Are they dumb?

Yea, I hear ya man. I thought for sure doug belgrad was a shoe-in. But I guess this guy is a penny pincher, which admittedly is what sony needs to get them to stop bleeding money
