Scott Summers. The first X-Man. He is one of the few X-Characters to have been involved in pretty much ever media version of the franchise. He is one of the most identifiable X-Men in the franchise. He is usually given the role of field leader, the man who will inherit the Xavier legacy...

With all that in mind, its fair to say, IMO, that most media versions of the character **** all over him.

And the sad part is, it's not the performances per se. James Marsden, and those who have voiced Cyke in the cartoons have all done a great job. In this case, the main problem is perception. In most media versions of the X-Men, Cyke is portrayed unflatteringly. He's shown to be a whiner. A tight wad. Or the guy who's practically obsessed with Jean Grey while she's too busy flirting or making out with Logan. If you ask the common man, they will tell you that they hate cyclops. And really, after all the cartoons and movies, can you blame them?

So, this thread is here to offer ideas as to how to change the perception of this vital character for future media incarnations

I don't recall having much of a problem with Cyclops' portrayal in the Animated Series or X-Men: Evolution. The films, on the other hand, fail to humanize Cyclops in a way that other portrayals do, and Cyclops is a character that needs to be humanized every once and a while, otherwise he risks being portrayed as the unflattering jackass described in the above post. He needs his moments of cool, where he comes out of his shell, does the unexpected, and says to Hell with the rules.

Moreover, Cyclops needs to be humanized in a way that doesn't simply poke fun at the character, such as apologizing for his poor landing or conceding that he's a dick when Wolverine calls him one.

Also, when Cyclops is portrayed as the uptight enforcer, it needs to be acknowledged that it is because he's doing what is best for the team and that he is at least right on occasion.

Of course, the character also needs more screentime in order to do this.

You want to make Cyke look better in different media incarnations? Simple...

Joss. Whedon.

Seriously, Fox, get him to write X4 and bring Cyclops back.

Hm... probably show the power that he has to keep in check... so some of the tight-wad stuff is more about his constant need to control a great power and less because of him being a 'd--k'.

Just like Joss Whedon did... so I agree with Loud Silent Man.
