Animation Toy Story 5

So glad they're bringing back Combat Carl! He was a great character and I was disappointed when he didn't show up in TS4.

I wonder if we'll see Combat Carl Jr., too?
He was in Toy Story 4, it was just more of a cameo since he was playing smaller versions of Combat Carl action figures.

That struck me too, and is partly the reason I don’t mind a fifth movie, even after the finality of 4. **** even Buzz took the backseat a little bit. It was basically the Woody/Bo/newbies movie with occasional guest appearances from the long-timers.

Yeah, it was pretty clear that they had NO idea what to do with Buzz in TS4.

Oh, cool, I guess I missed that! I'll have to go back and look. Thanks!

I mean, he was just Buzz. He's always been more comic relief then an actual character. The story of Toy Story so far has been Woody's. 4 continued that with what I felt was easily the best script.

Buzz pretty much went from the deuteragonist in 2 to the most prominent supporting character starting in 3. Woody's always been the core of the movies and I don't really see that changing with 5.

I'd argue the first Toy Story was Woody's and Buzz' film equally. They both learned something by the end, it was a journey for both of them. But his arc was pretty much resolved there and they haven't done anything worthwhile since then.
Pixar's signature formula is a buddy adventure film that makes you cry with a happy ending.

This.

That first movie fleshed out goofy space ranger having an existential crisis in one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the movie.

Toy Story is near and dear to me. I would put it a 'Top 3' franchise that I love, after Indiana Jones and The Dark Knight Trilogy.

That said, the 4th film really left me cold. With some simple changes, I could've loved it. But what they did to several characters, coupled with mutilating Woody (literally, not character-wise), and splitting up the group, and undoing the arcs of 3...sigh.

Toy Story 4 isn't a bad film. It's a great film - just a bad Toy Story film. I'm so tired of seeing people go 'We got to see Woody's arc finished!' when I cannot recall a single human on the planet going "Gosh, I loved 3...but I hope they make a 4th to wrap up Woody's arc!"

But I still welcome Toy Story 5. It might help enhance the fourth film and redeem it, for me.

And then after that, he's a goofball. Woody has the overarching character arc of not only each film but the series so far.

I mean, I think two things can be true: 1) At the end of the day, this series is Woody’s, and 2) even still, Buzz’s role in 4 felt massively reduced compared to everything that came before.

And there’s some trickle-down to that, too. If we’ve got Buzz in a reduced role, how much does that leave for the others? ****, I can’t remember a damn thing Rex did in 4.

I never understand why people feel like Buzz had a reduced role in 4. He had more to do in that one than in 3!

But generally it’s hard to continue writing for a character whose character arc is finished. What was there left to do for him after 1? He figured out he was a toy. There was just more to explore with Woody.

Because none of them did a whole lot of anything other than say goodbye to Woody at the end. What few lines Mr. Potato Head had were archival recordings since Rickles died a few years earlier.
