Ultimate Comics Thread - Part 1

Every black character who appears is a "token" who only exists to satisfy a "PC quota."

Every white character who exists is perfectly okay and isn't required to be justified in its existence.

This is how the universe functions.
There are weird arguments going on here.

People would have been upset no matter who replaced Parker, mainly because Bendis' interview insanity about how killing him off was really something he had to do to open up new story possibilities. Lots of characters have been going strong for longer than 11 years without dying, but this is Bendis' book and he was inspired to do something so he can do it.

When it comes to minority characters, we know there aren't a lot of good ones. But most of the A-List characters were made several thousand years ago or at least the 40's-60's when white people were in even more control. So just take a wait and see approach guys!!

This is really narrow minded. Storm and Spawn do not fit this at all. Both fulfilled roles beyond simply being token, and Spawn was it's company's premiere hero. Luke Cage, IMO, was never token, from his pairing with Iron Fist to now his presence has always been justified through his character and actions like any other hero...with a movie, he could become an A-List character.

That's what turns them into heroes I guess. If everything is going too swimmingly for you, no need to attempt to make the world better.
I don't think for someone like Spider-Man, a by nature more light hearted and jovial character, you need something as dark and graphic as "so and so who was close to me died". Maybe Miles just feels like his parents' don't understand him, or his friends' are lame and maybe he's a little shy so he doesn't know how to act out his emotions other than by wearing a mask and fighting crime. These RLS superheroes don't seem motivated by anything other than they're probably unhinged and like superheroes. Might be interesting to explore that kind of a person, but one who was fortunate enough to get powers. I think we're past the point where we need a cliche' uber-dark origin. The Walking Dead doesn't have a traditional comic book origin, in fact the whole openning sequence is rather incidental at this point, and yet the strength of the characters carry the book. I'd like to see something like that, a true character study but with tights and super powers.

I can see them bringing Peter back, and then Miles becomes the Ultimate Scarlet-Spider.

@The Squirrel: One of the reasons they killed Parker was so they wouldn't have 2 characters compete with each other.

I think it is funny though that Marvel is trying to increase diversity in that Ultimate Comics line and they STILL haven't introduced a proper Ultimate Luke Cage.

How funny would it be if Ultimate Luke Cage was white?

Hmmmm.... lemme see...

The Falcon - created in 1969
Black Racer - created in 1971
Luke Cage - created in 1972
Misty Knight - created in 1972
Green Lantern (John Stewart) - created in 1972
Blade - created in 1973
Brother Voodoo - created in 1973
Black Goliath - created in 1975
Bronze Tiger - created in 1975
Storm - created in 1975
Black Spider - created in 1976
Black Lightning - created in 1977
Human Top - created in 1978

...and these are just off the top of my head (DC & Marvel only)... I'm not here to take anything away from Luke Cage in particular, but he certainly was part of the early wave of blackxploitation (for lack of a better word) that hit the comic industry in the 70's... were they token... maybe not... but they were certainly created with the intent on being "black"... and if you read a LOT of these characters early appearances, black stereotypes are aplenty in these comics... a sad reflection of the times, but it still happened.

Just my two cents...

I think it is funny though that Marvel is trying to increase diversity in that Ultimate Comics line and they STILL haven't introduced a proper Ultimate Luke Cage.

Luke Cage was in Mark Millar's Ultimates 2 and made an appearence in Ultimates Annual. Jeph Loeb used Luke Cage and the Defenders as minor villains in New Ultimates.

Why should Luke Cage get forced to be used? Look at Mark Millar's Avengers:

In this cover:
prv8027_pg1.jpg

- Nick Fury -African American
- Tyrone Cash (Ultimate Joe Fixit Hulk) British
- Blade - British
- War Machine - African American

Not appearing on the cover would be Monica Chang the Asian Black Widow (and Nick Fury's ex-wife) & Red Wasp whos Russian. So theres already been plenty of diversity in Ultimate Marvel that didn't do a press release. Also Jonathan Hickman has confirmed he plans to use Ultimate Falcon that Warren Ellis' created so yeha plenty of diversity to go around.

It's still hilarious they haven't use Luke Cage to any SIGNIFICANT degree in Ultimate Marvel, because quite honestly they are trying to get him recognition everywhere else. They've been trying to get a movie for that dude for years. I'm sure he'll appear in that new Avengers cartoon if he already hasn't. If they want a flagship solo-title black character they need to start pushing Luke Cage harder on his own in the MU and UMU. The Luke Cage(s) they've introduced in the Ultimate Marvel is about as significant as the Punisher cameo in USM or the pre-Fantastic Four Fantastic Four appearance.

But why should they be forced to put Luke Cage in the front in Ultimate Marvel? Again he was used in Ultimates 2 for the Defenders, he will appear atleast in 1 episode of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes season 2 and i believe he is appearing in Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, atleast Iron Fist is.

Ultimate Marvel isn't about having tons of solo character comics, also Luke Cage's own mini sold like crap, noone cared to purchase it but under Bendis New Avengers the guy is doing fine, but i don't see why Ultimate Power Man should get more focus simply because of diversity, use characters for story reasons such as War Machine, Blade and Tyrone Cash we're used, or how Millar used Ultimate Punisher.

was there any confirmation that Tyrone Cash was Ultimate Joe Fixit ?

Nah thats just the comparison i use because it suits him the best, Millar always just referenced him as the Black Hulk and "Stephen Hawing turns himself into a Perma Hulk"

I'm done moaning about this. The new Spiderman is Black/Latino. The new Spiderman isn't Peter Parker. Accept it. Marvel isn't really making a big deal. Everyone else is making a big deal so Marvel needs to talk about it.

The question is will the stories be good. Based off Ultimate Fallout the new kid has Peters wisecracking. He also appears to have some of the abilities if not all. I think it may be better because they can move away from that Gwen/Mary Jane baggage. I think it may be good because now the series can stand away from 616 a little more. Ock and Goblin are off the table for now. If this kid can keep his mask on.......then crispy.

Did they have to kill of Peter? No
But then I think that's just playing it save. How can you keep the status quo without rolling your eyes going "Peter has lady trouble again?" or "Wow Aunt may gets shocked in 3 2 1..". But then that stuff can still be great decades later.

The Ultimate Universe is where you can make Reed Richards into Doctor Doom, Cure the Thing and give him new powers, Nick Fury is the first Super Soldier, and Spiderman is a guy called Miles. This is the comic book line where marvel can experiment and not have to take it back. If they tell good stories then let them do their job.

Well pish-posh to you, good sir. :p My favorite "Ultimate" Character just got killed off and replaced, for what I view as no good reason. So yes, I will give the new kid a chance, but I will still be bitter about it.

From Ultimate Fallout #4 it really seems as though this is young black Peter Parker, at least in attitude and manuerisms. So what will save this book in my opinion is it's supporting cast. I actually think that ultimately is what makes a character great, is his support network. Those relationships strengthen a character. I want this guy to have a full, normal sized, family. Father and mother, maybe an older sister, and maybe a pet. That would be neat I think. I also wouldn't mind seeing this character have typical edgy kid flaws, like smoking pot or sneaking alcohol, that aren't treated as massive character issues. I'd like to see a truly normal kid, maybe feeling alone, adopt an identity to find some adventure outside his own life and become a hero that way.

Cup O'Joe - August 8th

- Sara Pichelli as an artist is showing the world differently, the body language with Miles Morales is different from Peter Parker and Pichelli's goal is to make the comic naturally feel different.
- Pichelli: Miles is a sweetheart! I'm learning more about Miles with every script I get from Brian. All I can say so far is that Miles is younger than Peter. While the wise Peter already knew the right thing to do in certain situations, Miles has to go an extra step to reach the same results. He has to learn what his best options are and then try his best to achieve them. He comes from a deeply different background, which made him an introvert. Probably in the beginning, everyone will see him as a kid, but Miles knows that he isn’t just that anymore, and he's going to prove it to himself and to the world. But that’s all I can really say about him for now.
- Pichelli: I’m really excited to see how Miles will interact with the Ultimate superhero community. Peter Parker was considered just a kid from his "colleagues," so imagine what could happen to someone as inexperienced as Miles! I can't wait to see how Miles will make his way through the Ultimate universe, and how he will grow as a person and as a superhero.

The beauty of it all is that while we're probably going to have a new supporting cast, Peter's supporting cast will still be there and will inevitably cross paths with Miles. You just KNOW there's going to be a big Miles/MJ confrontation scene where she'll probably chew him out for insulting Peter's legacy. And just imagine where Aunt May would figure into all of this. I'm telling you, the more i think about this, the more excited I get about how potentially awesome this could be. Bendis better not blow it.

He looks like my little cousin.
