Ultimate Comics Thread - Part 1

Yeah, I haven't read Ultimatum or Ultimate Enemy/Doom, but Reed Richards is a pretty amazing villain in Ultimates right now. And what little I saw of Peter-Johnny-Bobby and Kitty in USM (I only jumped back on for the Death of Spidey arc) was done very well.

if your gonna read ult doom you should know that it was part three of a three mini arc much like the galactus trilogy. This trilogy is labeled Ult Doomsday and consists of Ult Enemy, Ult Mystery, and Ult Doom.

That story was pretty awesome too.

Interesting. I kind of want to read Ultimatum and Ultimate Doom. I know a lot of fans seem to hate the former because they kill off a lot of characters, but I kind of like that. The Ultimate universe is supposed to be more "realistic" for lack of a better word. In the "real world" people die. If you have a worldwide disaster scenario where every hero is basically at war, some are going to die. That makes the story sound interesting to me.

I don't think the deaths were what caused the biggest outrage because "good death can = good story", ala Death Of Spider-Man, but the way it was done was in the most callous, torture porneous way ever. There was no real story or anything. It was kind of like you've watched a movie 90% of the way through and you're waiting for a climactic ending and resolution but instead some maniac comes out of nowhere, eviscerates everybody and then walks off in the sunset.

Axel in Charge - March 23rd 2012

Kiel Phegley: Axel, we had a number of announcements coming out of WonderCon, starting with changes to the Ultimate Universe. Brian Wood has been tapped to writer "Ultimate X-Men," and we had talked initially when the line launched about your desire to see those titles synch up more strongly. A year in, how do you feel that piece of Marvel is holding up? We've got a handoff on the writing staff of one title and a whole new voice on another. What do you think the future for all those books once these changes take place?

Axel Alonso: The bedrock has been laid for an integrated Ultimate universe and what the writers are cooking up for 2012 will usher in even deeper connectivity between the three core titles. It's exciting stuff. More on that at a later date.

I'm thrilled with the new writers. When Brian Wood and I first discussed him doing some Marvel work, he said he'd love to play in this particular sandbox, and it shows. Fans of his Vertigo work or his recent "Wolverine and the X-Men: Omega" are going to love "Ultimate Comics: X-Men." And fans of Sam Humphries' independent work -- "Our Love is Real" and "Sacrifice" -- or his just-released "John Carter: The Gods of Mars" are going to love "The Ultimates." These guys belong here.

Outside of the specific story details, one real defining point to the Ultimate line right now is the idea that we're supposed to see things there we'd never see in the regular 616 Marvel U. Is that something you and Editorial discuss with new writers right out the gate -- strategies for keeping the universe significantly different?

Alonso: It's of the mandate. We need writers who "get" superheroes but instinctually think outside the box. In the Ultimate Comics universe, we're not afraid to break some eggs to make a tasty omelet -- something we can't do as often in the Marvel U. Miles Morales is the perfect example of this. We took the chance that readers would embrace a new Ultimate Spider-Man, and it paid off. What the writers have planned for 2012 is phase two of the long-term Ultimate plan, and let me tell you, fans of Ultimate Captain America have good reason to be excited about 2012.

Ultimate Marvel finally getting more coherent as promised, nomore Miles Morales and X-Men being behind Ultimates then?

Fans of Captain America to be excited? Oooh looks like Sam Humphries is really bringing him back, make it happen!

I'm so confused about Spider-men, just spill the details already.

blegh. I really have no interest in that at all.

I feel like they're trying to answer a lot of people's critiques of Miles not deserving to be Spider-Man by having him be approved/given a blessing by the 616 Spider-Man. puke.

At least Miles never erased his marriage. :o

It hurts because it's true. I still hate that, I have to admit.

That's just dumb, if you don't like Ultimate Spider-man don't read it! We still have The Original! Why does Miles being validated by Peter make a difference? Was having Obama in comics supposed to make those who did not vote for him feel different? If the stories are great people will come. If the Pres does a good job, clear minded people will see that (screw the rest). I happen to find the the alternative Ultimate fascinating. You have a choice....unlike at DC, where we're stuck with a lot of these inferior re-interpretations.:csad:

Ultimate Comics Ultimates #8 was...good...i think. I'm enjoying this series but, at the risk of sounding like an idiot, I wish Hickman would tone it down a few notches. I feel like I'm only comprehending half of the story, like there's alot of it i'm missing, especially with with Reed and the City (maybe I should have read Ultimate Enemy first?). And the way all of Hickman's characters talk, their jargon and techno babble is a little too intense sometimes to the point where i barely understand what the heck everyone's talking about.

...but that said I think Hickman is doing a great job so far, and Esad Ribic is KILLING it on art.

Nah you don't need to read Ultimate Doomsday series, really let me tell you all you "need" before Ultimates #1:

And here's the 616 Reed Richards:

the first issues of Ultimates explain how these people did during the dome for 1 thousand years and later issues show how Reed kept up with being the smartest of them.

#8 was indeed awesome. Xorn & Zorn with the whole Tian thing is just flatout awesome, can't wait for She-Hulk who is going to be a prominent member of the Ultimates, with Spider-Woman being the "Ultimates Peter Parker", the build up with Thor & Stark, but oh well President Obama is quite the dumbass in this issue hahaha.

I didnt quite understand all the time references either, Reed keeps saying how he's been around for centuries.....does time pass by differently inside the dome?

Good grief, I've loved the art on Ultimates since the relaunch.

everything about it is pretty good..the best part is it has been on time

I read Ultimates #8 the other day. Pretty cool. Reed Richards makes a great villain. I read Ultimate Doomsday as well a few weeks ago and that was superb.

Which proves this is fine when you get consistent quality..i have no problems with fill in art when done right

Sam Humphries prepares for Ultimates! Includes #9 preview!

In short, he really likes Thor, Nick Fury, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk and most especially the new Black Widow introduced by Millar, Monica Chang. Likes to write villains that aren't obvious moustache-twirling bad guys, but more like "is he a hero or a villain?" type of point of view stories.

Spider-Men is about Peter Parker & Miles Morales crossing universes.

This June, it’s time for Peter Parker, better known as the Amazing Spider-Man, to cross worlds and meet Miles Morales…the all-new Spider-Man? Marvel is proud to announce Spider-Men, an all-new five issue landmark story from award-winning author Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers VS. X-Men, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man), red-hot artist Sara Pichelli (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and acclaimed cover artist Jim Cheung (Avengers VS. X-Men), which brings Peter Parker and Miles Morales together for the first time. That’s right, the Spider-Man from two different realities—the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Comics Universe—bring their worlds together for a battle no one web-head could win!

When Spider-Man tracks down one of his deadliest villains, he suddenly finds himself thrust into another world where Peter Parker is dead…and there’s a new Spider-Man in town. As these two heroes learn the truth about their identities and their universes, they’ll embark on a journey that’ll leave them forever changed—and reveal a startling truth about a key player in the Spider-Man mythos!

"This year is the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man and we’re so happy that the stars aligned for us to tell a Spider-Man story that nobody has ever seen before," said Bendis. "It’s an honor and a privilege to present both this story and these characters to fans on such an auspicious occasion. The work Sara has done on Spider-Men is a step above the already high standard that she has set for herself on our Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series. For me, this is a celebration of the best character in mainstream comics and some of the best art mainstream comics has to offer."

Each issue of Spider-Men features variants covers by some of the biggest names in comics including Humberto Ramos (Amazing Spider-Man), Mike Deodato (New Avengers), Marcos Martin (Amazing Spider-Man), Terry Dodson (Avenging Spider-Man), Travis Charest (Captain America) and Sara Pichelli.

"Knowing how much Brian loves and respects Spider-Man, there’s no way I wouldn’t want to work on Spider-Men with him," said Sara Pichelli. "It’s going to be an explosive celebration of Spider-Man’s 50th anniversary—are you ready?"

In 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, the world first met Peter Parker and saw him become the hero Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe. Soon after, Spider-Man became a pop culture sensation, launching multiple television series, blockbuster films and some of the most popular comics of all time. Then in 2011, Marvel introduced Miles Morales, a new character of African American and Hispanic descent, who became Spider-Man in the Ultimate Comics Universe after that world’s Peter Parker perished.

"This is one of the biggest stories in Marvel history," said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. "Peter Parker and Miles Morales are two of our most popular characters and fans have been clamoring for them to meet—we’ve got quite a few surprises in store for both characters. This is only the beginning of how we’re celebrating Spider-Man’s spectacular 50th Anniversary."

This June, swing into action with world’s most amazing super heroes in Spider-Men #1
