USA colors on Cinco de Mayo

Why don't we celebrate Canadian holidays?

Well, first you need to look at it as is it a Federal Holiday or not?

Cinco de mayo isn't....therefore, its just like St. Patrick's day, etc....as far as Canadian's holidays.....I don't think anyone is saying you can't celebrate them.

The reason Cinco de Mayo stands out, is because Hispanics are a HUGE population in this country today.

As an Irish lass, St. Patrick's Day is important to me...therefore I celebrate it, just as my Hispanic friends celebrate cinco de mayo, its important to them.

Does Canada even have holidays?

Canada Day
National Aboriginal Day
St. Jean Baptiste Day (I think that is how you spell it)
Now I think they have one call National Multiculturalism Day...

And of course.....Christmas, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, etc...

I think they also celebrate Thanksgiving...

In the case of many of my students, it wasn't their choice to come here. They were brought here by family members, not by choice in some cases.

Then how can you have such love for a nation you've never been to?

Example - I'm of Irish descent. I am very much proud of my Irish heritage, and over the past couple years have decided to do some research into the legends and mythology's of my heritage, since I never learned a single fact about Irish history in school. Ireland is even a country I would very much like to visit before I die.

But, I was not born in, nor have I ever been to, Ireland. Thus, because I have no connection to Ireland despite my heritage, I don't go around flying the flag of Ireland.

I think people confuse ethnicity and heritage with nationality, which are two different things. People confuse culture, with borders. As I was born in, and spent my entire life in America, I am American, and proud of my American nationality. But I have no connection to Ireland, therefore I don't represent the country. But I still have pride in my culture and heritage.

That's where we differ. I feel proud of things I actually did. I have no reason to feel proud of something I had no impact on (such as what country was my mother in when I was born)

good lord. When people get in trouble for wearing a shirt that has the flag of their own country on it, you know the PC bulls**t has gone too far.

considering the definition of pride isn't exclusive to a person's accomplishments, I see no issue with someone feeling proud of their heritage.

Pride (noun)
1. a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc.

2. pleasure or satisfaction taken in something done by or belonging to oneself or believed to reflect credit upon oneself: civic pride.

A lot of ignorant people seem to think Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican version of the Fourth of July. It's not. It's a minor holiday celebrated in one town that in the US has been heavily commercialized by the alcoholic beverage industry. It's basically Corona Day here, and yet many Mexican-Americans falsely believe it's a day with reverence equal to the signing of the declaration of independence.

At any rate, if you live in America you'd better get darned well used to seeing American flags around. This whole incident has gotten exctremely ******ed, especially now that people on the other side are campaigning to get the kids wrongfully suspended. I bet a lot of those protesters are the same morons who were the Che Guevara t-shirts without even researching who he was and what he did to people. Seriously, kids. If you are born in America you are American first and whatever else you are second, but apparently some people don't get that.

I guess this is all just a cold reminder of how stupid country we're turning into. We've got whole neighborhoods at each others' throats over something so stupid while the media lines their pockets with all the ratings their coverage of it gets. Seriously, what's next? Riots on St. Patrick's Day because a pub in Wee Britain didn't put green dye in their beer?

What about the morons who voted for Bush twice? As governor, Bush oversaw the killing of 150 inmates. Around the same as Che.

Maybe they should've done their research before voting for a "mass murderer".

.

PC is such BS. When did it become illegal to offend people? Are we so weak as a people?

Those were not political killings, they were court sentences that Bush did not pardon, which is not "mass murdering." Che had teenagers murdered for not being loyal to him, and if you think that's the same as allowing someone convicted of murder by a legally appointed judge to be executed then you have my pity. And in addition to being a backstabbing mass murderer, when Che himself was executed he begged for his life, and said he was worth more alive than dead. Some glorious hero of communism he turned out to be.

And what's more, if I see some mouth breather wearing a Bush T-shirt without some witty caption attached to it then I'll be happy to give them an earful, too. I don't support the idolization of deficit spenders who invade the wrong country, and I don't support the idolization of communist mass murderers either.

If you think Che is so great then go down to Florida and tell it to the Cuban exiles, I'm sure they'll be happy to agree with you (if your definition of agreeing is having a fist slammed into your face).

For the record, I just want to be clear that I understand, and always have, that Cinco de Mayo =/= 4th of July. I understand that Mexico's independence is celebrated in September.

I admit I did not know that Cinco de Mayo was only celebrated in one small town in Mexico.

What? How can they love a country they've never been to? What are you talking about....?

Some of my students JUST MOVED HERE WITH THEIR FAMILIES, how do they not know about Mexico?

Uh?

I apologize, I misread the post of yours that I quoted. I read it as children of immigrants who had been born here. Reading comprehension ftl :(

Again, I maintain - keep your culture and your heritage, and celebrate it with pride. Absolutely. But you live in America, you're an American now, that is your nationality. Be proud of America. Those of us who are proud of being American shouldn't have to hide it because you came from another country.
