yep, artbook and poster. that's what comes in the europa edition. i intentionally avoided the NA version coz I hate steelbooks.

i got up to the part where you first start choosing the...I dunno the "targets"? i forget what it's called, it's right basically the first mission and I suspended it there. so i haven't really done anything yet.

At TGS 2016, Sega demonstrated the latest build of Valkyria: Azure Revolution, and we put together a little guide on how everything works, from controls to emotions on the battlefield.

Controls

L2 – Not in use
L1 – Change formation
Up & Down Key – Switch player character
Left & Right Key – Change Role Order

Options – Mission Menu
Left Stick – Character Movement, Cursor Movement
Right Stick – Camera Controls, Change Target (While locked-on)

R2 – Lock-on, Lock-off
R1 – Map Action (crouch, hide, climb, rescue)
Triangle – Battle Palette
Circle – Combo, Confirm
X – Evade, Cancel
Square – Guard

How to Play

The Battle Palette is where you’ll stop the time in order to make some selections such selecting Rune Arts or a rifle to aim a shot. The menu can also use it as a means to strategize, as the action takes place mostly in real-time.

Battle Palette

Using the power of Ragnite (consumes RP), you can deal heavy damage. In addition to damage, you can also cause various emotional effects on the enemies. Side Arms and Items are displayed in red on the right. Its uses are limited to the corresponding numbers.

Emotions

Since the enemies are also human, they’ll feel emotions just like anyone else, and they come into play for the battle system in Valkyria: Azure Revolution. Some of the Emotion effects include “Surprised” (cannot act for a short while), when you catch an enemy soldier off guard. A soldier that gets shot might get hit with a “Flustered” (minor status down) effect.

When an enemy leader gets defeated, remaining soldier might feel “Fear” (major status down). Or on the other hand, you could defeat all enemy units, where the remaining leader can go into an “Anger” (major attack increase) status.

There are various other Emotions out there that you’ll get to learn about while playing through the game.

Battle Situation

The goal is to push the blue in the “Battle Situation Gauge.” This can be done through nice plays and other means. Having the Battle Situation more in your favor has extra benefits, such as making it easier for the enemy to be hit with Emotion effects, or by having a chance to boost your own party’s speed and other benefits.

[YT]0IUKvE1Utj8[/YT]

We can check out the gameplay starting at the 3:10 mark of the video. The yellow meter that goes around the character’s status icon is the Action Gauge, or you can see it as “turns,” as they’re able to take actions once it fills up. As shown in the footage, they bring out the Battle Palette and decide to for the leader, which made the other enemies panic.

When he tosses the grenade at the group of enemies, it shows how they entered a state of Fear, and they were able to finish it up and captured the base with ease. The next part shows how the enemy has a ranged shooter, so you’ll need to use your own snipers to take them out, which is demonstrated in the footage. It also mentions how using smoke bombs, for example with Ophelia, to throw on tougher enemies to make them easier to handle. We get to see Ophelia follow up with a “Cyclone” Rune Art to take them out while they’re frozen with Fear.

This demonstration tells you what actions you should take in these situations, but you’ll need to figure it out for yourself in the actual game, so it’ll be important to learn about Emotions and items and how they can help you out. You can also use your environment, such as hitting explosives near enemies to do extra damage.

At 9:55, they take on the scorpion, which is the current objective of the demo stage. You might not need to use the guard action against regular enemies, but boss fights are the times you’ll need them most. Guard and evasion will help you out while waiting on the Action Gauge to fill up.

In this fight, they offer the advice of using Opehlia’s water attack to break its leg and put it into a “Down” status, making it possible to deal heavy damage to its core. Don’t forget to use items when your health falls. You can also switch around characters at any time. This will be crucial when you’re looking to find enemy weaknesses.

The build shown during the Tokyo Game Show 2016 is Valkyria: Azure Revolution’s Battle Demo Ver. 2.0., which is expected to be available for download in Japan in October.

Valkyria: Azure Revolution releases in Japan on January 19, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

Western release adds an Xbox One version.

Valkyria-Revolution-West-Q2-2017.jpg

Valkyria: Azure Revolution
is coming to North America via Sega and Europe via Deep Silver as Valkyria Revolution in Q2 2017, Sega announced. It will be released physically and digitally for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and digitally for PS Vita.

Described as a “revolution” from the traditional Valkryia Chronicles universe, Valkyria Revolution is set in an alternate timeline based on the European industrialization era and moves away from the traditional turn-based strategy gameplay of the series for a new hybrid of real-time combat and tactical strategy.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Sega:
About
All it takes is a single spark to start the inferno of war, and in the story of Valkyria Revolution, players will experience that firsthand. Five lifelong friends consumed by personal revenge plunge an entire continent into a terrible war, sacrificing the lives of countless innocents for a cause based on twisted half-truths and outright lies. This “Circle of Five” use their combined influence in their political and military positions to motivate their small, economically blockaded homeland to rise up and become a powerful resistance against its imperialist oppressors. Will the Circle of Five be remembered as heroic liberators, or will their selfish motives expose them as traitorous conspirators who sacrificed untold lives just to carry out a personal vendetta? Players will watch this history unfold in Valkyria Revolution and find out the truth behind the events…
Features

  • A Brush with Death – Turning the tide of battle in Valkyria Revolution is Brunhilde, one of the last of the ancient and powerful Valkyrur, magical beings with near limitless power. She’s bound by oath to the enemy forces and players will have to figure out how to defeat her.
  • Prepare for LeGION – Valkyria Revolution has a brand new battle system that mixes real-time combat and tactical strategy. Players can take control of the battlefield using brazen combos or cunning tactics and finding a balance between them is the key to excelling in skirmishes.
  • The Ingenuity of War – Through adversity comes great engineering, and with a besieged homeland, players will have upgrade their existing weapons through branching customization paths.
  • A New Painterly Look – Valkyria Revolution has a refined look thanks to the new Gouache rendering engine, giving the graphics a unique canvas texture.
  • Classic Composer – Valkyria Revolution has a vibrant soundtrack brought to life by the incredibly talented composer Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Stella Glow).
Valkyria Revolution is not just a new chapter in the legendary Valkyria series, but a whole new entry with new characters, a new world, and new gameplay mechanics. The static, turn-based battlefield has become an action-oriented stage for devastating melee combos, lethal ranged attacks, and strategic shifts to turn the tide of battle, all while exploring the incredible history of the Circle of Five.
If you’re curious, here’s Sega’s explanation of why they decided to drop the word “Azure” from the title of the English localization:

  1. The way the first Valkyria title was localized had a really nice ring to it: Senjou no Varukyuria (lit. Valkryia of the Battlefield) became Valkyria Chronicles. When faced with Aoki Kakumei no Varukyuria (lit. Valkyria of the Blue Revolution), a literal translation was unwieldy, and difficult from a graphic design standpoint as well, and adding in extra punctuation (e.g. Valkyria: Azure Revolution) didn’t help either. So we stuck to a similar cadence of the first Valkyria title and went with a two-word title. Plus:
  2. Given how vastly different the two games are (Revolution drops the turn-based gameplay, takes place in a different time period, different world, different almost everything), the new name helps to ensure the two titles stood equal but apart from each other.
In Japan, Valkyria Revolution is due out both physically and digitally for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on January 19.

Sega has released a new trailer for Valkyria Revolution introducing the characters that make up the Vanargand.

As previously detailed, the Vanargand is an elite unit formed to oppose the Rus Empire’s Valkyria. It consists of Amleth, Godot Vilfort, Brigitte Ulrich, Helena Andersen, Blum Thomasson, Tilda Gade, Issac Berggreen, Daryl Rommedahl, Sara Benner, Jordur Kvist, and Ophelia A. Jutland.

In addition to the trailer, Sega updated the Valkyria Revolution official Japanese website with two new character descriptions:
Maria Schmeichel (voiced by Kikuko Inoue)

“Maria-senpai” was adored by Amleth and company like a mother, but she was kidnapped by Claudius, who was crown prince at the time. Even while she is 20 years-old, everyone thinks of her as motherly due to her overflowing love and kindness. She always gives priority to others over herself and says considerate things. To orphans who don’t know what it’s like to have a family, she is a sister, a mother, and a first love.

Richer Laudrup (voiced by Masako Ikeda)

The storyteller of Valkyria Revolution. While this war is said to be “a war of liberation thrown like a stone at the imperialist era,” it is also said to be “a war of aggression started by a small country” and “instigated by the Circle of Five,” but she tells the true story. She is the great-great-grandchild of Charlotte, a professor at the “Magic Arts School” that Amleth and Ophelia attended. She is a lower class noble who comes from a long line of researchers, and is both a first-class researcher and educator.
Valkyria Revolution is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on January 19 in Japan, and for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PS Vita in North America and Europe in Q2 2017. A PlayStation 4 ‘Prologue Demo‘ is due out in Japan on December 22, followed by a PS Vita demo on December 26.

Following the launch of a teaser website last week, Sega has officially announced Valkyria Chronicles 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch. It will launch in the Americas and Europe in 2018.

In Japan, where an Xbox One version will not be released, it will launch for PlayStation 4 on March 21, 2018 and for Switch in summer 2018.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Sega:
About
It is the year 1935 EC…
The continent of Europa is engulfed in the flames of the Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire’s forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them. With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war.
Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation’s success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria… and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core.
Key Features

  • A Coming-of-Age Story in a Time of War – Valkyria Chronicles 4 takes place in the same timeframe as the original Valkyria Chronicles, but focuses on a whole new cast of main characters. Players will take command of the eager, young Commander Claude Wallace, engineer/heavy weapons extraordinaire Riley Miller, hotheaded Darcsen Raz, ice-cold ace sniper Kai Schulen, and more. Together, they will experience the painful realities of war–but will the bonds of Squad E’s friendships survive the frozen battlefield?
  • The Next Generation “BLiTZ” Battle System – The part overhead turn-based strategy, part RPG, and part real-time 3rd person shooter “BLiTZ” battle system returns to the field. New features include an explosive new class called the Grenadier, numerous offensive/defensive battleship support options, chances for a unit to have a “Last Stand” action before death, and more. Plus, fight the imperial threat with more units on larger-scale maps than ever before.
  • CANVAS Aesthetics – The series’ signature hand-drawn visual style is back and overhauled for the newest generation. Inspired by watercolor compositions, the CANVAS Graphics Engine blends visual elements of reality and imagination to create an expressive world filled with colorful emotions. Watch the journey of Squad E unfold like an interactive painting!
  • The Return of a Legendary Composer – The illustrious Hitoshi Sakimoto, original composer of the Valkyria Chronicles series and countless other emotional epics, returns to provide a sweeping orchestral soundtrack for the game.
In Japan, the standard edition of Valkyria Chronicles 4 for PlayStation 4 will cost 7,990 yen and a “10th Anniversary Memorial Pack” limited edition will cost 12,990 yen. First-print copies of the game will include an additional mission. Here are the details:
PS4 Version Limited Edition
The “10th Anniversary Memorial Pack” limited edition will include the following:

  • A copy of Valkyria Chronicles 4 for PlayStation 4
  • A product code for the additional story downloadable content “Joint Operation with Squad 7” – A story in which Squad 7 from the original Valkyria Chronicles appears. By playing this downloadable content, the Edelweiss operated by Welkin Gunther, as well as Alicia Melchiot, Largo Potter, and Brigitte “Rosie” Stark will be made available in the main story of Valkyria Chronicles 4. Additionally, Isara Gunther can be acquired as a unit for the first time.
  • 10th Anniversary Soundtrack – A CD containing a selection of music from the series’ four titles.
  • 10th Anniversary Illustration Book – A booklet filled with illustrations from the series’ four titles. The front cover illustration is done by Raita Honjou. It is B5-size and 72 pages long.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has new details on the newly announced Valkyria Chronicles 4.

The tactical RPG is being produced by Katsura Mikami, who was one of the producers of this year’s Valkyria Revolution. According to Mikami, Valkyria Chronicles 4 will be a “proper evolution that returns to [the series’] origins.” It is set in the same era and intense cold region as the first game.

The new “Grenadier” class can use grenade guns that have long range and high ballistic altitude. By firing it in the sky, you can unleash an attack that flies over the enemy’s cover. If an ally catches hold of the enemy’s location information on the front lines, a Grenadier can attack the enemy without the enemy seeing them. However, they cannot attack an enemy directly in front of them.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is due out for PlayStation 4 on March 21, 2018 and for Switch in summer 2018 in Japan, and for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch in 2018 in the Americas and Europe.
Thanks, Ryokutya2089.

Update 7:20 a.m.: Here’s a few new details:
Raz is quick to get into fights and talks with a rough tone, but is a passionate man who cares for his friends. Kai Schulen is a silent and blunt character who speaks with a manly tone.
The familiar Tanks, Scouts, Engineers, Lancers, and such of the series will also appear. The three-way deadlock of Soldiers, Lancers, and Tanks is also alive and well.

Development on Valkyria Chronicles 4 is currently 90 percent complete.

Thanks, Hachima Kikou.
