'Punisher' gets Lionsgate overhaul

October start date set for new franchise

'The Punisher,' which starred Thomas Jane in the 2004 incarnation, will get a redo.

Lionsgate is overhauling "The Punisher," setting an October start date for a new franchise that will be built on the broad shoulders of "Rome" star Ray Stevenson.Director Lexi Alexander, the German-born former world kickboxing champ who directed "Hooligans," will helm the film, which will aim for an R rating.
Nick Santora, Kurt Sutter, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum wrote the script. Gale Anne Hurd and Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige are producing with Avi Arad. MHF Zweite Academy Film is financing.
Stevenson was first seen in Hollywood alongside Clive Owen in the Antoine Fuqua-directed "King Arthur," but he's known for playing the Roman soldier Titus Pullo in the HBO series.
"Ray was the first name I wrote down after I saw 'Rome,' because he managed to keep the audience caring about him despite being the most violent guy," said Feige.
New project will mark the third screen incarnation for "The Punisher," which originated in a comicbook about Frank Castle, a Marine-turned-vigilante who is driven by a desire to avenge the murder of his family after they witness a gangland killing.
Property was turned into a 1989 film that starred Dolph Lundgren and then into a 2004 pic that starred Thomas Jane.
New film will be set in New York, where Castle runs up against a mobster.
Pic will be exec produced by Oliver Hengst, Bill Johnson, Mike Paseornek and John Sacchi. Ernst-August Schneider and Wolfgang Shamberg are associate producers.

I personally think this is fantastic news.

What I'm hoping for...

1.) Central Park, Forrest Hunt execution. Does Lexi have any kids?? If so (and this is just an assumption) she may employ the bloody central park massacre. I hope, I so hope!!
2.) No cop angle
He's an ex marine.
3.) No love
4.) a Cameo with Thomas Jane and Dolph Lundgren (ok I know too much.)
5.) A bloody Vietnam scene (it's been a while since Ive seen a good Vietnam war movie, Lexi please don''t follow other's example, and forego Vietnam. Vietnam was a special kind of war, a period in our country's history we shouldnt forget. PLEASE NO IRAQ!!!)

Punisher Begins, let the bloodshed begin. Terrific news and about time Lionsgate makes it official, it only took 3 years.

The other great thing about this news is that they're filming in Montreal, which from what I understand, is a cheap place to film. This will be good for the film overall, hopefully leading to some great action throughout.

One huge flaw of the last Punisher film was that the action didn't really kick in until the climax of the film. That's a bit too late when we're talking about The Punisher.

I think Stevenson looks a bit too young for a Vietnam veteran.

I hope to god it's not another origin story. for Chrissake this will be the third separate Punisher origin movie, a trilogy of origins! Can we, just this once, even if it IS considered a new franchise, start of with the Punisher as an established character?

I love the Punisher origin as much as the next guy but there certain constraints when making an origin film. I'd rather Frank start the movie already the Punisher and we get right into the action from the start of the movie without having to spend any time focusing on the origin of the character for once.

I don't think they can afford a war scene. All I want to see is a large body count, villains who deserve to be punished, and proper motivation established for why he does what he believes needs to be done.

^I'm glad they are distancing themselves from the Tom Jane movie, even though i loved that movie, with a new Punisher and director it would be stupid to make this a direct sequel.

Also, do people realise that now THREE of King Arthur's cast will have played CB heroes?

They haven't laid it out in clear terms but it has been referred to as a rehaul and a reboot in recent news reports. Plus on Alexander's blog, she referred to the film as "The Punisher."

I don't think anybody's completely sure. Except Advanced Dark, who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men. Plus he's magic.
