It is a Renaissance mask, or a reproduction of one. It is in keeping with the theme for the mask that I would prefer- dead pan and implacable, rather than hammer-horror and cranial.

As I said, the former is a blank sheet, while the latter might just raise a chuckle in anyone over 13.

I would think a black Renaissance-esque mask would raise more of a laugh in regards to a dark Batman film. The mask I was referring to that was in BB that Scarecrow saw of Batman looked perfect and fit around the cheek bones as Black Mask's mask should.

With that mindset, I would assume Michael Caine shoudn't be in the third Batman film just because he's been in four Nolan-directed films already.

I'll have to side with Regwec on this.

The skull is, as he said, too "on the nose". I think Nolan likes to keep things simple, revisit the early appearances, and try to project the essential elements of these Batman characters. It isn't at all essential that Black Mask wears a skull, in the same way that perma white wasn't essential for the Joker (although I would have liked it) or that the Lazarus Pit wasn't essential for Ra's.

I could picture a black ski mask, a mask made of hyde, a wooden mask, a Renaissance mask, a halloween mask, or black face paint. I'm stretching it, I know, but my point is that the idea of black concealing Sionis' identity is what is important, and I think a simple, expressionless guise is the way Nolan will likely go.

Regarding the comic panels posted: It looks a little too Doctor Doom, as someone else was saying. It slightly reminded me of Bane too. The expression also poorly reflects the man's angst, so instead of coming off as a passionate supervillain, he just looks like a standard thug.

I'd rather something more sinister and angry looking, even if it's simplistic like the Renaissance mask posted.
