Hey guys I hate to have to say this and I have not heard Doug's SS voice but I heard him in a couple interviews and Doug is quite animated and enthusiastic and I think talented enough to create a suitable voice for SS, now these are my feelings.

Twice now Tim Story has posted something on his site and then just as quickly removed it. Somebody is clearly (suggesting?) editorializing his myspace blog. Nevertheless I think that he was giving the fans a heads up. I think Hellmistress may be right, the suits have issues with using Doug's voice and i think I know why.

Doug is clearly able to do a voice, he is an accomplished actor, but this is hollywood and the silver surfer is possibly going to be a franchise player soon. That given, the choice of not using Dougie's voice may be an attempt by the suits to dilute the Doug Jones experience in deference to making a complete change in the future to a high profile A list star for his own franchise if the surfer really takes off.

I think that this is Doug's role right now and he deserves the voice role as well. It is an unfortunate position to be in when the body of your work as a whole is not respected and reveals the sometimes heartlessness of the guys in the suits. There is not a lot of purity in that business and it looks like right now they might be giving doug "the business".

Couldn't have said it better myself. Kudos. :D

^ Yeah but even Tim said using the voice of some a-list actor is something that would take the people out of the film.

If someone is an A-List actor then it usually means they are pretty damn good at their job. As long as the voice they come up with isn't clearly them, then why would they rule out someone who could bring lots more interest to the movie?

I understand what you are saying, but if Doug can make a voice that isn't recognisable then why can't an a-list actor do the same?

Not neccessarily. I know a LOT of A-list actors who couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. Plus, A-List actors cost big bucks. If you're wanting a voice that isn't immediately recognisable, then what the heck is the point of spending all that dosh on an A-list actor trying to sound unrecognisable, and then alter the voice digitally? Pointless and expensive.

There may be a LOT that can't but I seriously find it hard to believe that there are no A-Listers who could do this. I am aware of the cost, but A-Listers are also a big draw to some movies. Do you realise just how much positive publicity can be received by casting an A-Lister? It would be everywhere. Newspapers, magazines, radio etc.. Even if it was a 2 second cameo.

I am not saying this is the route Fox are going, I am just saying it is very possible that they may want to pull in someone who is going to give the movie an even higher profile by association.

Of course there are A-listers who could do this - but I'm talking BIG money here, even just to do a voice - and A-listers aren't going to want their voices interfered with AT ALL, which will probably happen with the SS voice. Perhaps it would do some press for the film, but to be quite honest I think it would backfire on Fox, and on top of that it wouldn't be great for the rest of the cast either, publicity-wise. I don't think they would appreciate their roles in the film being overshadowed by a so-called 'big name' coming along and probably getting paid more than the four of them put together just to do a voice. And it wouldn't do Fox's rep much good either.

Of course, Fox could do just that, and it may work for them, but I would be most surprised if they do. I guess we'll have to wait and see - but then, I'd be happy if 'you-know-who' did the voice in the first place. :D

Well it makes a lot more sense for "He who must not be named" to do the voice anyway, I am just throwing out possible thought patterns of Fox lol

Thought patterns?? Gosh ... to paraphrase The Shadow, "Who know what thoughts lurk in the minds of Studio Suits ..." :D

lol I'm sure they aren't all bad, people tend to group them all together as one entity.

Exactly.
If Fox isn't thinking seriously about what name will get top-billing on the marquee for the (probable) Silver Surfer movie, I'd say they're not doing their jobs. Nothing should be off the table in the creative process if it's good for the final product.
But I wouldn't want to see Doug Jones get short-changed on the credit for all that he does.
I'd want to see an absolutely joint credit, like:
Silver Surfer.................Doug Jones
Silver Surfer (voice).......Eddie Murphy

Just kidding about Eddie Murphy, of course.
But they're surely thinking about their options on all of this.

Too bad Vic Perin isn't around these days. He was the voice of the Surfer in the '60's FF cartoon. He was also most famous as the voice of "the controller" on the old Outer Limits show. Great voice. Great delivery. Great presence.

and by the way, not to pull any money out of Doug's pocket for a speaking part, but after hearing him speak it's not the voice I want to hear from SS.

Not unless the Surfer voice is considerably deeper.

Just FYI, he didn't use his normal speaking voice for SS when he was filming.

He can speak in different ways...not that the Surfer is a Spanish Faun but still he can alter his own voice as can most people. I don't think the Hulk was Austrailian but Bana did a good job disugising his accent. Did you see Pan's?

Doug was dubbed over in Pan's Labyrinth. That isn't his voice you're hear, but the narrator's.

Oh then I stand corrected. I remembered Hellmistress saying it was his and how he had perfect dialect.... and when I went to the movies I was shocked at how deep and gravely it was. Oh well the Surfers voice would be more like Doug's then Pan anyway. LOL

How about Edward Norton?

No, I said that Doug perfected the accent with all of the nuances etc. He always knew he was going to be dubbed in the role, but he wanted to give Guillermo the best performance he could. G had said it didn't matter if he counted to ten, but Doug didn't want to do that - so he became word perfect, with the accent and everything. Bit of a perfectionist, you see. ;)

But the Surfer's voice he's worked on is a lot deeper, very measured and stoic.

Well then I might hold my opinion until I hear that. It's nice that he is that meticulous about his work.

Ach, what the heck - I'm not going to lose sleep over it. The studio will do what the studio wants, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. :yay:

PS - love the sig and the name, BTW. Gary Seven was a fantastic character, and I've always been a fan of Robert Lansing. Most excellent!
