War of Kings - Part 1

So, I was going to Marvel's website to look at the October solicitations again, and I saw this. Not too interesting in and of itself, but then I saw the Related News links, which includes Who Will Rule? Vulcan and Who Will Rule? Guardians of the Galaxy (!). Vulcan and the Starjammers obviously go together, but the Guardians are going to be involved too?

Now I'm wondering, could this be the third Annihilation event? All the Annihilation characters colliding with the X-related Shi'ar stuff? The very prospect has me excited. I've absolutely hated how the X-line's monopoly on all things Shi'ar has effectively cut a big chunk out of the cosmos available for the previous Annihilation series. If they're finally reversing that and allowing the other cosmic characters to interact with the Shi'ar/X-Men characters--perhaps because Vulcan decides the Shi'ar Empire isn't enough and menaces the rest of the universe?--I would be overjoyed.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'll be looking forward to news on this in particular as SDCC gets going over the next couple of days. I hope I'm right.

Just finished WOK, loved it, although Ronan being incapacitated for most of it and Blackbolt getting beat by both Gladiator and Vulcan was a bit much, overall I liked the series.

I want to get the TPB of Realm Of Kings but can only find one titled The Imperial Guard, does this TPB cover all of RoK or are there more?

I think there's more. I want to say that there's a Realm of Kings tpb with the one-shot that starts it off and the Son of Hulk mini (which is unnecessary really) and maybe something else. There's likely an Inhumans Realm of Kings mini as well. Then there's the Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing titles that had trades during the Realm of Kings era.

Then they all lead into the Thanos Imperative, which was great.

Did you just read the War of Kings trade including the main mini? If so then I highly recommend the other War of Kings trades including Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, and whatever trade had the Darkhawk "Ascension" story (as well as the 2-issue Darkhawk mini that led into it).

Realm of Kings is collected into the following:

Realm of Kings which collects:
Realm of Kings one-shot, Realm of Kings: Inhumans 1-5, Son of Hulk 1-4 and Realm of Kings: Imperial Guard 1-5

ISBN 0-7851-4809-4

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4: Realm of Kings which collects:
20-25

ISBN (softcover) 0-7851-4049-2

Nova Vol. 6 ROK collecting:
29-36

ISBN 0-7851-4067-0

The is an Imperial Guard TPB but it's included in the Realm of Kings HC.

I read Road to WOK, WOk:Warriors which had the Darkhawk storyline, and then of course WOK, I was going to go straight into The Thanos Imperitive but then realised there was some more story in between, is it worth reading is my main question?

Ah right thanks, not sure I have the money for all of those but lets see.

As far as the Thanos Imperative, it's hard to say which trades you should go with. That's sorta my problem with trades. If you want the lead-in, there's about 4 or 5 issues that'd be good to get... though they are all in different trades. The Realm of Kings One-Shot, Imperial Guard is a good follow up to that, then the final issue of Nova's series, then the last 2 issues of Guardians of the Galaxy, and then Thanos Imperiative: Ignition and Thanos Imperative 1-6. That's a good read order for the Thanos Imperative.

However, that said:

Nova - Not important to Thanos Imperative save the final issue, but the Realm of Kings stuff does follow up on the Darkhawk plot from War of Kings.

Guardians of the Galaxy - A good bridge between Realm and Thanos Imperative, though only the last two issues are necessary for Thanos Imperative proper. It concludes a lot of the story that had been building throughout the series involving Magus and the Church.

Inhumans - This just follows up on the Inhumans side of the War of Kings story. It's a decent story with nice art but not really important toward anything.

Imperial Guard - This follows up on stuff began in the Realm of Kings One-shot and turns out to be probably the best story with the Imperial Guard that I've read. It's simple but good.

Son of Hulk - Completely and Utterly passable. It honestly has nothing to do with the cosmic side of things other than it takes place in space. This is more of a story for the Hulk world and has no effect or bearings on War of Kings or Thanos Imperative. It was one of those situations where an 'event' (Realm of Kings) was tagged onto the mini moreso for sales than for actual connectivity to the event.

^Interesting, thanks for the info, depending on my money situation I may get RoK just on its own, or I may go straight into The Thanos Imperitive.

Either way, thanks for your help.
