Was Gwen Stacey always slated to be a character in Spider-Man 3?

Safe to assume that Arad pressured Raimi into using the character?

Im not sure about Captian Stacy, but originally Gwen was not going to be in the movie. Raimi said there was going to be another girl (a character that was going to be made up for the movie), but I believe Ziskin suggested to have this girl be Gwen Stacy.

Yeah it was Ziskin who wanted Gwen. Arad who wanted Venom.

as for Captain Stacy, I have no idea.

Correct. It's all in the article that is linked in my sig. :yay:

Oh come on guys, quit pointing fingers and let the film be what it is.
Would you have been happier if the Police Captain was Capt. Reynolds and the girl's name was Melanie Smith?

And a fine addition to the franchise to boot.

Once Gwen got approved you knew Cap was not far behind.

It would be interesting to know if there was a police captain in it before though. And whether that role was always meant for captain stacy or if it was just another random guy.

Gwen or Captain Stacey weren't bad characters in the movie. The sucky part of having Gwen in the movie was linking her with Eddie Brock & making it seem like they were in some type of a relationship. It was more of a delusional/stalkerish type relationship on Eddie's part though.

They should have elaborated more on the stalker bit IMO

The chapter in the book where Eddie showed up at Gwen's house after being exposed as a fraud would've done that quite well. I think it was filmed, since we did have pictures of a suburban house and all.

Yea thats why I wish they kept that part if it was indeed filmed :(
Oh well heres hoping for an extended cut

It's this sort of crap that pisses me off. Why come up with a new character when there are plenty of characters to use? I mean there's Gwen, Betty, Liz, Deborah....why would they even think of creating a new character? Its madness, hopefully we'l get a new cast and crew.

Because when Raimi uses a preexisting character, people ***** and moan about how they're portrayed. Look at all the whining over Gwen's role in SM3. Raimi said from the beginning that she was just supposed to add to the fragility of Peter and MJ's relationship, and that naming her "Gwen Stacy" was just to introduce the character. But even knowing that, people have criticized the role for reducing Gwen to a cameo role with little screentime.

I agree, they shouldn't make up new characters, but whenever Raimi uses an existing one he has to live up to the ridiculous expectations of fanboys. It's a complete catch-22.

Raimi admitted that he was reluctant at first at the idea of using Gwen b/c of continuity purposes(in relation to the comics). Knowing that, and knowing since this character had such a minor role in the movie why couldn't Raimi just have expanded Betty Brant's role to be the girl that added the fragility to Pete and MJ's relationship? Obviously, you'd have to do a little rewriting as you wouldn't have Betty in the same class with Pete but I think they could have found a way to make it work.

The main problem being that Arad and Ziskin explicitly named Gwen as being the "rival love interest" for the movie. It's entirely possible that "other girl" (as she was called in the script) was going to be Betty Brant, but the producers wanted Gwen, the same way they wanted Venom instead of Vulture.

Arad had nothing to do with Gwen, it was only Ziskin.

"Well, my brother and I had written in the story about another woman that recognized Peter and knew who he was at this dinner and that Mary Jane got jealous of her," Raimi said. "But Laura Ziskin, my producer, said, 'Let's make it Gwen.' And I said, 'I don't think I should, because, ... really, Gwen was introduced before Mary Jane in the comic books, and now I'm introducing her later, and ... she's not even in high school anymore. She's in college. And I'm afraid if I introduce Gwen, the fans will have all these expectations, which we're not going to deliver in this picture.' And she said, 'Well, the fans would much rather have Gwen make an introduction now, and you can do what you need to do or someone can do what they need to do in the fourth picture with her, but at least you've introduced her, and they would appreciate that.'"

Raimi said he considered the suggestion. "After much soul-searching, I thought, 'Maybe it's true. I've already screwed up the order, and I've already started the Mary Jane [storyline] first,'" Raimi said. "'Whenever [Gwen's] introduced, she'll be introduced in the wrong order. I might as well give the fans the introduction to Gwen.' So I took her advice and named her Gwen Stacy and therefore connected her to a policeman who had been on the periphery of the scenes [and became her father, Capt. Stacy, played by James Cromwell]. Made a little stronger relationship between them but, not much, just enough to be true to the fact that she was his daughter. That's about all."
