Iron Man Was this really Iron Man?

What is the TC's problem? Iron Man is probably one of the most "faithful to the comics" movies ever. Stop trying to turn Stark into Batman. Tony has always had a sense of humor like Spider-man does; and the alcoholism didn't happen for a while, as other people have said. As for "Iron Man" being kiddy, that is so wrong. Just because Tony isn't all dark and depressed, like a certain other superhero, doesn't mean he's just for kids. I mean last time I checked, shrapnel to the heart, setting people on fire, and sex with women, were not kiddy ideas.

although one could argue that our kids theses days are being exposed to more "adult themes" at a younger and younger age than when we were kids. which, in many respects, is NOT a good thing.......

but I digress.......

I think it did fine. Before we delve into the charter's darker side, we first need to be invested in him. This first film did that. Why do things always have to be darker to be better? Sure, it had humour, but it wasn't really dumb humour. The humour was quite witty, filled with double entendres and such.

Another superhero movie due has a very over-used line that could apply here. You won't catch me saying it though :o

Umm, I like Iron Man too and any true Iron Man fan will know that this was a good film that was not faithful to the comic.
Tony Stark is a SERIOUS dude, not a comedian.

I do get your point. To me faithfulness to the comics isn't the be-and-end-all in an adaptation. Batman Begins has always claimed to be THE epitome of faithfulness, but is far from being actually faithful. Its faithfulness level might be high yes but there's a long list of important exception between facts and characterizations.

Tony Stark was done perfectly by Downey Jr and yes, I'd love to see him deal with darker issues. But any faithfulness claim to this movie pales in front of what I saw on screen.

So.......you are saying BB is more faithful to the comics than IM? Honestly, I'm kind of confused by what you are trying to say. :(

I don't know Iron Man enough to say. I'm saying that BB was as unfaithful as any other movie. Or at least it had an important amount of differences.

That said, even if someone proved me that Iron Man is more unfaithful I still consider it a better movie the way it was done.

oh and btw, nice avvy :D

Ah ok. I was going to say BB is VERY unfaithful to the comics. IM isn't unfaithful at all. It's just kind of modernized.

Thanks but I got it from Crook. Dude's an evil genius when it comes to avy's!

Many people with substance abuse problems are cool people to be around, who seem genuinely fun and carefree. It's only later, when you get to know them better, that cracks in the facade will become apparent and you get glimpses of the darker soul that has a serious problem. They'll hide whatever troubles them inside from the rest of the world and lie to themselves to great extent.

So I think Favreau was clever and indeed faithful to portray Stark as happy-go-lucky in this film and save the darker stuff for later. It's called building a character arc...
I know someone had to mention this, but just in case...

You just described Robert Downey Jr. Heck....he even dated Sarah Jessica Parker during those years. (Ms Sunshine.)

"Troubled" is not always "dark". And "dark" is not always "the better way to make a movie".

Yes.

He's not like Punisher or even Wolverine for that matter but from time to time he does kill here and there if there's no other way.

He tries not to kill but sometimes it happens. So him killing those guys from the 10 Rings in that village didn't bother me at all.
Also...would even make sense that a guy who makes weapons for a living would suddenly hate the thought of killing someone just because he threw on a suit of armor?

Agreed. Much like Eggyman said...

He's right, they don't have to be. Unfortunately it seems as though angst-riddled and tortured characters are the only people these youngins seem to identify with. /shrug

I was also just wondering if there aren't more funny lines in Casablanca than in Iron Man. There has to be. Funny lines does not a comedy make.

I think everyone is right about what kind of movie Iron Man is. It seems to do everything well and to appeal to all. I have personally heard everyone from a 12 year old to a 60 year old praise it.

It's got a great cast, great effects, great humor, great drama, great action (without overdoing it as we've seen in other movies)....and the actual look of Iron Man appears to me to be the coolest looking onscreen super hero to date.

I never expected to see the darker side of Stark in this one. I knew it was going to be an origin story that would have enough to show without getting into the nitty gritty. There's time for that now since there are excellent foundations for them to build on.

Eggy what's up with you and the egg obsession?!

Nothing is up with me. We all have our kinks :o
