watch the golden compass go to hell

The movie should be about talking polar bears in armor and other silly fantasy things. I'm sure a lot of people walked out of the movie very surprised at any religious messages. I sure don't know anything about the author of the books
The author has publically stated that his goal in life is to undermine (or maybe he said denounce) christianity.

Oh, I'm sure it was made quite public. But you'd still have to go looking for the information. I don't tend to research movies b4 I got see them lol. The trailer is enough for me to make my decision

I was quite in agreeance with you until my Aunt told me about this fact. I really could have cared less if he were an atheist or agnostic or whatever, but with his ambition to denounce/undermine it... I just don't want to give him my money.

I find this hard to believe. Sources? Link? Interview?

Here're some quotes I easily found with Google.

Pullman denied to Al Roker that his books are anti-religious. "As for the atheism," he adds, "it doesn’t matter to me whether people believe in God or not, so I’m not promoting anything of that sort," he wrote in response to a question from "Kim, Friday Harbor, Wash." But what did the author have to say on the issue six years ago, when asked by the Washington Post what famously Christian author C.S. Lewis would think of his books?
"I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief," says Pullman. "Mr. Lewis would think I was doing the Devil's work."
And what did he tell the Sydney Morning Herald in 2003?
"I'm a great fan of J.K. Rowling, but the people - mainly from America's Bible Belt - who complain that Harry Potter promotes Satanism or witchcraft obviously haven't got enough in their lives. Meanwhile, I've been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God."

I don't think he's ever said it's his "Life's Goal", but it is A goal.

So you have no source other than your Aunt who none of us know and could be very unreliable, is that correct?

I have Willy.

I think you for the support and the correction. One of his goals...

Not according to what you posted. The context of the question was, according to that article "what would C.S.Lewis think of his work?", and he said in response to that he was trying to undermine Christianity. In other words, he feels a prominent Christian author would feel his actions undermine a religion, he never said that was his goal. It doesn't seem, by what you posted that he's actually trying to undermine an entire religion.

The Diety says: So you still have trouble believing in me?

Agnostic: Well, you didn't leave any proof... I wasn't sure.

Diety: Proof? Proof?! Do you know how Me-damn complicated your circulatory system was to design? *Pinches bridge of nose* I don't know what to do with you kids some times...

Agnostic: *Looks around*So... I'm going to Hell?

Diety: For what?! You've been a good person. You have a few minor sins on your soul, a year or so in purgatory and you're in... Damn Fallwell. *now mumbling to self* ******* convinced you people I hate you.

Agnostic: So... purgatory?

Diety: Through there, *points* Looks like a waiting room. The magazines are a bit out of date, but pretty good.

Agnostic: *pauses* about reincarnation...

Diety: If you want... *looks at a datebook* right now we have a Laotian girl, a honduran boy, and an American... *sighs* hermaphrodite. how many times do I have to have people tell them... *Looks at agnostic* if you go back female, don't smoke during pregnancy.

Agnostic: I think I'll just go to puratory now...

Diety: Good... oh, and tell everyone there I arranged for some entertainment... Ratpack's playin' tomorrow night.

That was great,... thank you,.. I could see this as it happened,...

What would C.S. Lewis think?

I am trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief, AND, since that's what I'm trying to do, C.S. Lewis would think I'm doing the devil's work.

The answer to the question is "He'd think I'm doing the Devil's work."

Why?

Because of his goal, to undermine the basis for Christian belief.

man, i've never actually seen anyone 'own' wilhelm before. good work.

I'm not religious but in this day and age where people have this animosity towards all religions...I don't find it hard to believe in the slightest.

What was in that article you posted, I call that extreme backpedaling so as not to get his head ripped off by religious fanatics.

Uhh, you still haven't.
He explained, in his answer to the question, that C.S. Lewis would think he's doing "the Devil's work".

Why?

Because...of the pre-existing fact that "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief."

He said, "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief. (PERIOD)
(NEXT SENTENCE) C.S. Lewis would think I'm doing the Devil's work."
What "Devil's work"?
The undermining, that he is trying for.

I never said that I've read the entire interview to get it all in context, but if you go by what's offered, he doesn't say
"C.S. Lewis would think that I want to undermine Christianity."
He says,
"I want to undermine Christianity.

THEN

"C.S. Lewis would say I'm doing the Devil's work."

See, how he specified, "C.S. Lewis would think..." right there?...and not for the first statement?

:)

Also, his motivations are well-known, to many people, except, as it appears, Shadowboxing.
AND, I clearly posted the other quote, about how he doesn't care what people believe...which can either indicate that he misspoke in the past, or that he was being disingenuous and backpedaling with the impending release of his big movie.

I think it's pretty obvious that he is very anti-religion and was probably backpedaling. :o

Either way, I see no pwnage. It looks much more to me like Shadowboxing's continued problem with reading comprehension, which I've seen many times in the past...but again, I don't KNOW that, unless I hear the sentence before "I'm trying to undermine the basis for belief in Christianity."

maybe that's the way you chose to interpret his response, but it appears to me his response to the question of "what famously Christian author C.S. Lewis would think of his books?" was "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief. Mr. Lewis would think I was doing the Devil's work." as in, "he would think i'm trying to undermine the basis of christian belief." it looks like both sentences were the response to the same question. can you prove otherwise?

Heh, that makes no sense. It's redundant.

If you asked me, "What would Jerry Falwell think of your new movie, Wilhelm?"

I'd say, "Well, my new movie features bestiality, extreme gore, nudity, profanity and blasphemy."

(FACT ^ , as a support for why I think Jerry would think...)

"Jerry Falwell would think my movie is a sign of the end times and will bring down a tsunami on my back yard."

(What I think Jerry would think^)

Why would he say "I am doing this, this and this."
AND THEN say: "C.S. Lewis would think I'm naughty."
It makes more sense that he's telling why he thinks C.S. Lewis would think he's doing the Devil's work.

I don't have the original interview. I may be wrong.
BUT, if you go by what is quoted.
He makes a STATEMENT about himself, as a prelude to answering the question, and THEN, he clearly answers the question.

C.S. LEWIS WOULD THINK I'M DOING THE DEVIL'S WORK.

That's his answer to the question.

But someone feel free to google-hunt for the original interview.
I'm sick of doing it for everyone else. ;)

EDIT: Either way, no waaAAAaaAAAaay did I get "pwned". :o

I stand beside Willy on this one. The most logical conclusion from that statement is "He is trying to undermind christianity, thus C.S. Lewis would think..."

Frankly I think Pullman would make great conversation... much like the way I enjoy talking with Willy and Fish-Bulb. I disagree with them, but the challenge me to study and understand my faith and it's origins.

i've tried looking for the original interview on the washington post's site, but it won't load properly, just the headline shows up, no text. anywho, i have a hard time believing he'd come right out and say he's actively trying to undermine christianity. that seems like it'd be career suicide with how influential the christian community is in america. i just wanted to see you be wrong for once. i like your posts, generally, and i agree with you on a ton of issues, but you sound like you could benefit from being taken down a peg every once in a while. you've easily got the biggest ego on these boards.

Not if he was saying that to appeal to the small but growing and influential atheist/agnostic population.

could be. but really, how influential is the atheist/agnostic population? i'd sure love to find the full transcript of that interview from the washington post...

I'm not sure but headlines of atheists who are trying to remove G-d we trust from money or from the Pledge of Allegiance are heavily promoted with those efforts picking up steam and the removal of pray from public school I don't believe was the due to the effort of Christians so it seems to me that they may be an organized plan to undermine Christianity, if not religion period, in this country.
