WB Superman Reboot 3.0: Christopher Nolan Edition

I do think its worth noting the Superman Returns timeline

It's also worth noting that Superman didn't throw a punch. Like I said earlier, Nolan's Superman should be compared to Iron Man. Let's look at that movie's schedule:

November 2005 - Marvel start development
April 2006 - Jon Favreau is hired
September 2006 - Robert Downey, Jr. is cast
March 2007 - Shooting begins
June 2007 - Shooting ends
May 2008 - Film is released

So, basically, 5 months are spent on development and 2 years on actually making the movie. Compare that to Superman Returns where 2 years were spent on everything. So, if we use Iron Man logic then a director should be announced no later than July with shooting beginning in summer 2011.

I wonder with Leo being in inception if we may also see him in superman..Nolan certainly likes to work with the same actors..just a fanboy rambling.:word:

Superman might not have thrown a punch in returns but that doesn't take CG to accomplish so its a silly argument. Things like the fortress, the airplane scene, new krypton, the daily planet globe, even the famous corn, those are all CG. Just because its not what anyone wanted doesn't mean they didnt use it and it doesn't take time to do. There right on schedule. They've been working on a script since late last year I'm sure, and with the script being crafted before they have a director it goes without saying that the director they choose isn't going to have total control of the project, they're lucky if they even get to decide smaller things.

It's hard not to see Lex in Leo in that pic. It must've crossed Nolan's mind.

I knw, I think he would be perfect casting..
You do know Leo loves comics dont you?

Leo for Lex. . . interesting choice. If you told me this, say 10 years ago I would've said hell no. But after watching him in a few dramatic/serious roles (Blood Diamond, The Departed), I think he could pull it off.

same boat here, would have said that, the only thing I am curious about is if they went with him as lex who would they pick for supes? He always to seem to shine when he is surrounded by great actors so what kind of cast would we go with if we were looking at him as a presumably younger lex against superman

That's a good question. If picked up I think many people would have the same reaction as when Ledger was picked to play Joker. This of course is just my opinion. As for Supes. . . I wish we would've heard a few rumors by now.

Uninspired and very unlikely.

He's pretty much already playing Lex Luthor in "Inception"

Inception's already out??

EDIT: CHECKED

Inception isn't out yet. . . :cmad:

Got this quote from CMB.

"..What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think know how you approach Superman".. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that."

well, nothing really confirms that it's an origins tale though.

yea for me i said it before i really hope we have director locked in july/aug frame, then casting for at least lois and clark between sept-nov. Then have film shooting by april/may/june 2011 so there is still plently of time for 4-5months of shooting, and a good 10 or so months for post and all that.

Not much from that quote from nolan on supes. But i cant wait to see what they have for us.

Wasn't it confirmed that its not an origin story by latino review? Actually whats interesting in the article by empire (posted in the dark knight sequel thread under sequel info hunters) is that he talks about finding a director and that its definately not going to be himself.

^Yeah, it also seems to stress that he knows that Batman and Superman are different.

He'd be too busy with Batman 3, plus I don't think the character of Superman fits Nolan's realistic style of film making; even on the verge of Inception. I'd love to see J.J. Abrams or Martin Campbell direct this.

i think nolans version of superman is going to be very much grounded in reality like the fleischer cartoons. those cartoons had a very depowered superman, a black and red s, and had more believability with almost every aspect to superman; including the way he changed into superman. he had to put on each article piece by piece of the costume was put on. he also didn't fly as fast or was as invulnerable as he is now. this sounds like it will be a mix of fleischer cartoons and district 9 bc you're going to have the brainiac aspect.

well from what we gather it wont be a full blown origin film. but that doesnt mean various aspects of origin stuff can be there. or like we see how clark for example decides to become a public heroe and development his look/persona and all that.

If you take his comment literally & not try to interpret it in any other way. it almost sounds like he's saying, go back to the Superman of 1938. The depowered vigilante version who knocks around criminals who are trying to steal from old ppl. Not my ideal version of Superman. Hope I'm wrong.

I think I know where Nolan is coming from in that quote... and I see brilliance in it. In TDK the Joker was very much like the Joker of his first appearance: not blatantly funny, a fearless murderer that announces his own actions in the media to create even more chaos than just the act itself. With Supes... well... Supes creation goes back to 1933, where there was still effects from the Great Depresion and was published in 1938, in a world that was hearing cries of war everywhere. These two situations are clearly happening today. The world where Supes was created and this very same world we live in are DARK. Not in aesthetics, but in situations. The Supes of the 30s and 40s was the light in a world of total chaos, and I think this is very much what we're going to get... and curiously enough, it's BRUTALLY realistic (wars everywhere and economic crisis are THE two things right now) and doesn't harm at all the essence of the character.

I really dont see how nolan commenting on the basic nature of the character somehow means that this movie is gonna be an origin movie...in fact, it shows how limited the imagination is when people assume the only way to show the core of a character is through an origin movie.

I don't understand why people assume that Nolan is trapped into the "realism" box. Spielberg style could have been considered realism too before Close Encounters or Raiders.

While I know he is not going to direct, a Chris Nolan directed Superman film could possibly exceed the original and even surpass the Fletcher animated shorts in terms of Superman portrayal on film.
