Why does everyone assume WB wants to follow Marvel and Disney's movie plan? They may not even want to try and compete.

They want to. There have been rumblings since years that they are desperate to have their JLA movie. The only thing stopping them is they don't quite know how to do it.

That there isn't a DC universe in place doesn't boil down to WB not being interested, it boils down to them not being able to crack the formula.

You can bet that DC would be falling over themselves to have their on DC movie universe. There can never be enough money for the studios. They always want to earn more money. Everyone wants to earn more money in this world.

I want a Harry Potter prequel series but I don't know about this yet.

You know what? Sounds interesting, I'm in.

PS: I'd be even more game if it was a porn prequel about Dumbledore's "adventures": 50 Shades of... no I can't do it, it's low, even for me.:csad:

If that was going where I think it was, it was a lame joke anyway. So 2012. :o

Straight up prequels tend to suck because they follow familiar characters. As such you can't really play around with things. Since Newt has no direct connection to the main series this will be less restrictive than say a Dumbledore movie. Jo gets to tell a fresh story while maintaining the familiar elements of the world she has created. That's a win/win situation.

Wow 5 pages already! This is great news for Harry potter fans. It may not reach the same heights but it should still be fun

I don't know about this yet. I would rather have seen prequel movies with young versions of Harry's parents and Snape and Voldermort. Sure we get some backstory about them in the books and movies but it could be expanded. But I see why J.K wants to go with fresh characters and things we haven't seen.

But what I find weird is that the movie takes place 70 years before the events the Harry Potter books/movies but the books and movies NEVER give us a clear time frame for when they take place. Did the events of Harry potter saga take place in modern times, or like in the 1920-30's? I mean you would have thought wizards would have a faster way of sending mail instead of by owl, while muggles have the Internet ha ha. Anyone know for sure?

^ The books DO give us a timeframe for when they are set:
The first book starts in 1991, and the final book - not counting the epilogue - concludes on May 1, 1998. The final book's epilogue is set 19 years later on Sept. 1, 2017.

This means that Newt's story will start in 1920s NYC.

Okay cool, I only read the first three books and half of the fourth book years ago, but didn't remember the dates or years mentioned. Still the events take place in the 90's it seems hogwarts was stuck in the 1930's or something. But thanks for clearing that up!

Sounds really interesting. I'm excited!

Will there be any mention of the founders of Hogwarts, or will it be completely left out?
What about the school for witchcraft and wizardry "over there"? Do they have an "abandon ruin" too, or is it just a normal school?
Will some teenagers play a part in the story?

Yeah, their technology can seem kind of old fashioned, but they do have other things to entertain themselves

Well, I mean the wizarding community has an old world vibe, but it's clearly moden times what with mentions of computers and TV's in the books.

Now that would be cool. They should have the movie be about the founders of hogwarts.

I think the most interesting timeframe was the 30-40s, that was the time Marvollo Riddle was attending Hogwarts and at the same time when Dumbledore was facing his former friend turned dark lord.

But by going with these time periods you already know what's going to happen as with any other prequel, this new adventure is a whole open book. I remember reading in the book they are adapting that there was a creature classified as one of the most dangerous magical beasts which had the appearance of a blanket and shoked people to death while they were sleeping, i wonder if we will see it on film form.

Edit: Aparently it's called a Leithifold

I would always be open to more Potter related stuff and this could be pretty cool. It could have more of an action/adventure feel with the author character tracking down, catching or exterminating the beasts rather than being set around one core plot point. It could also be, at least visually, interesting to have it set in a city and have dragons flying around skyscrapers and the muggles reacting and such, rather than being set in it's own sort of contained world..

I haven't read the Fantastic Beasts book and this may seem a bit cynical but I wonder if part of the deal for the new film was that WB wanted it set in New York so they could include American actors this time or if it was JKRs idea...

I like the idea of trying to do something not tied to Harry, Dumbledore or Voldemort though. The idea someone else mentioned of a prequel about the Hogwarts founders could be interesting too..

I guess it would be dependant on Rowling and the terms of the original deal they had but I was always quite surprised WB never tried to spin Harry Potter off on to TV either in live action or cartoon..

They could set a series based on each book/year and focus it more on the school aspect rather than the Harry/Voldemort plot by basing it around either the supporting characters or create some new ones. Each series could be intertwined with the Harry plot thread and have it running in the background and could have him cameo from time to time but show what all the other kids get up to while Harry and Co are off doing their thing. They could feature book specific stuff each series too, for example bring in the Dementers in series 3. It could also be a way of including more school lesson stuff and minor plot points that some fans felt were missed or left out from the films...

I am of course interested. I hope this goes well. Love the HP world.

haha, I still remember that "nyeahhh" meme.

I would've preferred a film series based on Quidditch Through the Ages :o

:hehe:

Actually I think this'll be a good series. Sort of like Pokémon, but without the battle aspect. Plus Rowling can still work in the "Wizarding World" universe she's built. I find it interesting that we're going to find Newt Scamander in New York, I would've thought we'd meet him in London. Love the idea of 1918 though, I for some reason always enjoy those kinds of "period" films.

I also find it interesting that she's doing the scripts herself. I'd've thought that she'd want to work with Kloves, at least at first.

"Starring Matt Smith/Benedict Cumberbatch/Tom Hiddeton/Eldris Elba/Tom hardy/Michel Fassbender as Newt'.

While it remains that Voldemort went to Hogwarts in the 40s, I see no reason to believe that the films were set in the 90's.
